1 out of 5 eggsNot recommened

Pros: None since the the setup software sucks.

Cons: Everything at this point.

Other Thoughts: I bought this to as a media server. I have a DLink 2 bay NAS which is running out of space since I only have 2 1.5 TB drives in it. I bought this so I could get at least 8 TB storage. So far it has been a big mistake. The software for this is a steaming pile. It is overly complex and bloated. All I want to do is have access to my hard drives without the 40 other things the software tries to do. Why is that so difficult? The Dlink came with a small utility that had the unit connected in about 2 minutes.

5 out of 5 eggsJust plain awesome!

Pros: Easy. We have been using this to stream Blu-ray movies in three media rooms for a year and it is FAST (Raid 10) and never misses a beat. All our photos are on it and other documents. I have never lost a drive either. We use it to store Windows Media Center TV video copies from our HTPC.

Cons: Maybe its a little small with only 4 drives? I like Raid 10 so I'm planning on purchasing the 1813+ next. Lets face it, if this device hadn't worked so well I wouldn't be buying a new $1000.00 1813+.

Other Thoughts: I have never seen this thing stutter. The video runs smooth as silk and its all in 1080p. Thanks to Synology my first NAS experience has been fantastic. Thanks Synology. They are number one for a reason. If your having trouble with your Synology NAS, its probably you!

5 out of 5 eggsAbove and Beyond Customer Support

Pros: Full UI / Good Throughput / Nice Features.

What really stands out though, and completely worth the 5 stars, is their support. When I originally purchased one I bought a new WD30EURX drive to go with it. Copied several terrabytes of data to it without issue. Woke up one morning and the partition was gone on it.

The cause of the lost partition is as yet unknown, the running theory is that it was a drive failure.

Synology support however, worked closely with me over teh course of 2 weeks to remotely diagnose and debug to try and figure out what happened, as well as were able to get my data back by manually recreating the partition table so I could copy the data off onto another drive.

Hands down, this company exceeded any level of customer support, and were very helpful in solving the issue.

Definitely will recommend any synology products in the future, if just for the level of support they provide.

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsRisky Business

Pros: Clean, neat. Easy to slide drives in. UI is fairly nice.
System also allows direct SSH access when needed.

Cons: Lost one of my drives partitions after a week. 2TB of data gone.

Don'y rely on it for data integrity.

Other Thoughts: I purchased a new WD30EURX to go along with this, and was the first drive put in it. All SMART tests listed with the drive have always been good. One week after use, I unplugged it to move it, plugged it back in, and the drive in question lost it's partition on it, again, still reporting no SMART errors.

Synology support was initially good, requesting debug logs, then logging into the NAS directly to try and fix it, however it has now been 5 days since I last heard from them and I think I will be returning the unit and warning others to stay away.

I realize the purpose of a NAS is backup for when a particular drive fails, but when the drive is fine, and reports no errors, followed by the NAS randomly losing the partition on it, with no logs or errors of the event, that is a design flaw and a data risk.

3 out of 5 eggsIt kind of reminds me of windows 95

Pros: It's a Synology. The management interface is several multiples of awesome. Community seems great too. Hardware is solid, and for the most part easy to set up. Can find good documentation on how to set it up to backup to CrashPlan on the web.

Cons: I did read William P's comment before buying this, but didn't really take it to heart. The reason this is $220 less than the DS412+ is because of the hardware. There is so much you can do with this device that once you start setting it all up, you begin to realize there aren't enough hamsters turning the gears.

My main uses for this are for home cloud synchronization (documents and media) and backup archival (raw files, time machine, and windows backup / file history). But I also want to follow the 3-2-1 backup rule, and looked up how to sync nas folders to CrashPlan.

If you think you want to do this then go look up 2 articles by PC Load Letter (author) and Scott Hanselman (user) who describe how you can make this happen. In order to make this work, you have to install java on the nas (which is pretty easy as long as you follow the instructions).

The thing about Java is, it can be a real resource hog. The JVM needs to allocate a heap in RAM, so running this CrashPlan backup is already dealt a bad hand with only half a gig. On mine the CPU monitor is very active, but in all fairness it is still doing the initial disk data scrubbing.

Other Thoughts: I too think I am going to trade this up. I love the product, I just think it needs more muscle given what I want to do with it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS system

Pros: No issues whatsoever. This was plug and play essentially with minimal set up. I had no experience at all with NAS or servers and was easily able to get this up and running with 4x WD 2TB red drives. The set up has been in use for just about a year straight with relatively light usage overall, but has never given me a problem. The system application/admin panel that comes with this is very good. It has many features that are beyond the scope of my intentions for the system, but still useful.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Outstanding product. If it looks like it will solve your storage concerns, get it, you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but not as expected

Pros: Unit is small. Clean looking and fairly straightforward. When it comes to Synology there is no doubt their OS is what makes the brand a quality product. Set up was super easy on the unit. Thus the 3 eggs.

Cons: Of course, you get what you pay for. However, unfortunately with this one the 512 MB of Ram and the 1.6 GHZ makes it very difficult to use all the features it truly provides.

My purpose for the unit was to build a home Cloud server with our primary files to be Video, Music, and Photo's all accessed either through our Roku/Tablets/Cell phones. Using Synology's DS Video/DS Audio/DS Photo apps makes this possible. Unfortunately this unit just cannot stream the video without a constant lag. Even with the ROKU hardwired to the network video streaming was PAINFULL at 1080p on a 40 inch. Streaming to a cell phone away from the home network over our 4g network was impossible. While I could access video files over our cell network carrier (out with the kids) the unit could just not handle the load and would play video for 5-7 seconds and lag out for 5-7 seconds and repeat.

Other Thoughts: I contacted Synology initially to explore some of my concerns and while discussing with them my intentions it was made clear that the unit appropriate was a DS1513+ which I ended up ordering from New Egg. I ended up sending this one back to new egg and I will write a review when I get the 1513+

It should also be said the

5 out of 5 eggsImperfect, but still marvelous

Pros: An exceptionally rich feature set. Shared network drives and RAID, of course, but also streams H.264 video to numerous devices like my Apple TV, can record and stream TV (if you add a compatible USB TV tuner), act as a network print server (if you have a compatible printer), record and monitor webcams, provides private 'cloud' style storage, backups for your various PCs/Macs, and much more.

Relatively very easy to set up, although the nature of the various network services does still require a bit of technical knowledge.

Cons: Interface can be a bit sluggish, but is remarkably user-friendly (essentially a minimal 'Linux' desktop presented through your web browser.) There is still definitely room for improvement (for instance, I don't care for the insistence on double-clicking things as if it were a native desktop environment.) I would strongly advise the design team to curl up with an iPad for a few months to get a feel for highly polished consumer-friendly UI design.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm absolutely delighted with this device as a home/personal/small group server. There are things that definitely be improved, but it's still a marvelous little 'prosumer' product. If you have an extensive legacy video collection (not H.264) some of the higher-end models can transcode video for you for streaming to set-top boxes like the Apple TV.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy, adaptable, success!

Pros: The web interface on this thing is exceptional. They have apps that can do anything you might need, from backups to media servers to antivirus. The installation and management of the apps are easy and automated with a user friendly GUI. I put two high-end NAS drives in and it has been running for two weeks with zero issues.

Cons: So far, no cons with the unit specifically.

There's some kind of firewall/port issue between my PS3 and the media server (which is common due to a web search). I haven't tracked down the root cause of the issue yet, but a quick reset of the media server fixes it for now.

Other Thoughts: Do your research and don't be afraid to spend a little more on something decent, like this unit. I was unhappy with three "budget" brands until I found this baby. I'm very happy!

5 out of 5 eggsAll in one dumping ground.

Pros: This machine is a good buy. I finally have something to backup all my computers and a place to put all my movies.

Cons: By all means go to the Synology website for compatibility. The forums are super helpful. I bought 5 WD Red 3TB drives and 2 were bad. Not Synologys fault, but if I would have perused their forum I probably would not have bought them. Also there is a learning curve, be patient and go to the forums for help.

Other Thoughts: Price wise, its a good deal. You can load it up with 4-4TB hard drives. If you need more than that, you should seek professional help. By all means, and I cannot stress this enough, you should check out their Website, and forums in particular, before you buy.
