5 out of 5 eggsThis Unit rocks

Pros: This NAS is great. I have 2 - 1TB Seagate drives in it and so far so good. utilizing 90% of its features from the Itunes server to the uPnp server. The transfer speeds are a liitle slow when uploading larger movie files from your PC but other than that it does a great job streaming and uploading all other files. The processor is a little small and if your budget allows the 209+ I would go for that one just for the larger processor.

Cons: None at this time except the documentation could be better but thats what online forums are for I guess.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome NAS

Pros: All the best features at a value price. Great performance. If you're looking for a personal NAS, get this!
Alot of bad NAS products out there an this isn't one of them.
Documentation is plentiful and you can compile third party apps for it, if you want to.
Quiet and easy to setup.
Just don't forget to by the disks.
I've got two 1TB Raid1.
Throughput of large files over 100Mb LAN is about 6MB/s.
This uses CIFS on EXT3, not the old SMBFS so you can store files upto 2TB in size vs. the old SMBFS @ 2GB only!
Web interface is AJAX based and nicely done.
I'm thinking of buying another one and placing it at some relatives and setup mirroring over the NET for specific directories.

Cons: Can't find any.

Other Thoughts: other features include: Webserver w/mysql, Itunes server, UPNP Multimedia server, printserver, Photo/Blog server.....the list goes on.

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful

Pros: Love this thing. I dropped two 1TB drives in, it had them formatted and ready within about 10 minutes. So far has handled everything I have thrown at it like a champ, including being a respectable little web server (considering the specs). Easy to install, web interface makes it quite easy to manage. I'm very satisfied.

Cons: My only minor complaint is that documentation for some of the 'power user' type features isn't included with the product. While you can do about 90% of what you want with the web interface, if you want true root, you're going to have to Telnet or SSH in, and that isn't made clear. For example, if you want to customize the Apache web server httpd.config file, you're going to have to do some searching through the Synology forums and help wiki to figure out how to get to it (and probably void your warranty in the process of modding it).

If you're an old pro it's not a big deal, and if you're not sure what you're doing you shouldn't be messing with root here anyway (you can brick it if you're not careful), but for the intermediate level techie or someone not familiar with Synology products, it's a little frustrating as you flounder around the web looking for info.

Other Thoughts: Apart from the lack of detailed documentation, this thing is great. I can't speak to how reliable it is over time yet (only had it a few days), but so far I'm impressed.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Excellent case design, excellent software design. Installed a SATA drive quickly, plugged it into the LAN, started the CD, the software found the NAS, recognized and formatted the drive, asked a couple quick questions and was done. Took about 10 minutes for the software to prepare the NAS and make it available. The included software utility is clean and simple. The web-based management software is simple and straight-forward. A test copy of 1.6 GBs of data from Windows XP only took about 4 minutes.

Cons: None as yet.

Other Thoughts: These Synology devices extremely capable. We purchased it simply as a NAS but discovered all the other features during setup - we are considering future purchases to make use of these additional features. It can serve as a web-server, iTunes library server, picture server, includes backup features, email notifications, and will even recognize a smart UPS plugged into it's USB port for a controlled shutdown in the event of a power failure.

The device and software are so well designed that it is almost as if Apple designed it. It works exceptionally well right out of the box with almost no configuration.
