5 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: Price. Attractive design. Ease of use. Has been a dependable workhorse for me.

Cons: None worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: I've been reading through some of the dire negative reviews and wanted to chime in with my very positive experience with this device. This device is a great value. Mine has been working dependably for over a year attached to a Windows 7 environment. I use this primarily as storage for Plex Media Server. Initially I put a single Seagate NAS HDD ST2000VN000 2TB drive in it. Just recently paired that with another identical drive to make a 4TB RAID 0 array. Drive installation was easy. Also mounted this on an Ubuntu 14.04 HTPC no problem. Overheating has not been a problem. Have not used (or needed to use) the front flash port or USB ports. Transfer speeds could be better. I get 75MB/s read and 40-45MB/s write over my gigabit network. I recently attached my printer to it via a USB cable to free up a jack on my 5-port switch. The web interface is easy-to-use, somewhat simplistic. Not a lot of minute controls on this thing, but it does what it sets out to do simply and well--and for a good price.

3 out of 5 eggsVery slow

Pros: Networkable storage

Cons: Very slow to access. If the power goes out you have to turn it back on manually.

Other Thoughts: I thought I was getting a good deal on a NAS but I would have done better with a different brand.

2 out of 5 eggsGet less than what you pay for

Pros: Its cheap

Cons: I own two MAC laptops running Mac OSX Mavericks and it takes forever to open folders in this NAS from the MAC's in the LAN. Those problems are not noticed in the Windows Machines or with my Synology NAS. I have an iTunes folder which is around 600 GB of music. iTunes in my MAC stopped recognizing the KD20 after that folder grew above 100G. So, if it cant perform even this - what can I use it for? Not happy with it at all. If you really want something rock solid, feature rich and really slick, save the money and buy a Synology.

2 out of 5 eggsNot reliable and extremely poor tech support

Pros: Very nice appearance and easy to setup.

Cons: I copied files to this device from two different Operating Systems....Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The files copied to it from my Windows 8.1 device get marked as READ ONLY and I need to uncheck that option on the file if I want to delete it....otherwise I get access denied when trying to delete. Windows 7 is fine. I contacted their tech support and while they are somewhat responsive their answers are VERY brief and they seem to have an attitude like they could care less. The device also stops functioning from time to time. I can ping it when it is not functioning properly but cannot access it via file share or web interface. The only fix is to power it off and back on. I brought up both of these issues to their tech support and was given a "we're working on it" response but with NO follow up and NO solution to the issues. I would never buy another device from this company.

2 out of 5 eggsVery Cool - Then Overheats and becomes unresponsive

Pros: It is affordable when on a good sale.
Easy to use for a NAS.
Software included is good
Upto 8TB
Build in RAIDs

Cons: Overheats and becomes unresponsive.
This will cause you to wait and wait and wait and then wait dome more. Only to have to force it down by unplugging it.

Of course this puts ALL data at risk. Also this will change the IP and that will also become a headache.

The help number is a joke. "We will call you back when someone is available"... (no they wont)

Other Thoughts: I like it but it looks like it may be bricked

4 out of 5 eggsEasy install, works well so far

Pros: Installation under Windows 8.1 Pro went easily. Just followed the quick start guide. It now sits quietly on a shelf above my desktop. The only thing noticeable are the bright blue lights.

Cons: Acronis True Image HD DVD which is mentioned in the specifications and is included with the hardware will not work under Windows 8. Even Acronis admits this. I'm using Windows File History for backup right now. If you want Acronis, you need to buy it.

Other Thoughts: It is a shame that Shuttle paid to include the Acronis DVD for this system, but didn't get a version that will work with the latest version of Windows. They don't even offer a download to replace the DVD.

1 out of 5 eggsI don't know if this thing is a piece of junk or defective... but not very pleased at all!

Pros: Small, decent build quality. Purchased at what seemed like a great price. Easy to access storage via hot-swap

Cons: The software on this thing SUCKS! Even after the firmware update, the lack of options and inability to configure this thing using anything but basic methods is SERIOUS Fail! Purchase this for your grandma perhaps, but if you want options... look elsewhere. Purchased as storage/media device to stream my PLEX server while at work, and it CONSTANTLY crashes or enters some kind of sleep mode whenever I have to pause my music. Even rebooting PLEX on my system (which pulls files from the NAS via Samba share, after disabling NAS "sleep" settings... hard disks are not overheating) doesn't help. You can't do any kind of remote access with this thing unless you use an insecure password (no special characters period), and it has no way to remotely wake once the dumb thing does go to sleep. No WOL, I can't even use my Vera system to power it up using my phone because you have to manually power it on every time you want to boot it... and the only wake to wake it from sleep mode is... to be there to power it up.
Another Con: The constant high-pitched squeal of this thing gives me a headache. It's like putting your ear next to an old CRT monitor for hours.

Other Thoughts: If you just need a device to sit as a backup for whenever something goes wrong on your main system, this thing probably will work for you. For any kind of power user who needs remote streaming abilities, and wants to actually do things with their NAS... Useless! You get what you pay for, and much less. I will be returning mine and will just bite the bullet to build a real NAS system.

1 out of 5 eggsArrived defective

Pros: NA

Cons: Reliability

Other Thoughts: Purchasing this NAS was for a Raid1 configuration for "real-time" low power backup and sharing, hoped to be maintainance free once setup. This unit failed to deliver.

Unit arrived defective after a long shipping delay through the holidays.

The failure sympotom is similar to the description in one previous review (failed at 6 months): Unit powers up, boots. registers either per DHCP via router, or direct connection to PC at default IP. The front indicator never goes into the "blink red" mode for setting up using default IP though. It replies to ping. But refuses any connections. Hard resetted. Have tried on Windows and Linux, using Chrome and Firefox through the web interface plus two switches, no success. Attempted ssh, telnet and FTP for kicks, connection refusal was immediate. Cost me 5 hours last night, while enthusiasitcally preparing my new storage schemes, and few hours this morning - prayed for miracle, and searched for a service mode with no success - there have to be a designed service mode, they are gonna Jtag say any software/firmware issues? Documentation is no good, marketing made it sounds like a turn key solution which in this case is more than disappointing.

Clearly this purchase no longer provides value. It failed to deliver a solution, rather more problems sooner or later. Requestting for RMA.

3 out of 5 eggsHopefully some future firmware fixes

Pros: - Great performance for the price (if you can live with the cons below). With promo code, half the price of base level Synology and QNAP units.
- 60 MB/s read and 40 MB/s read over wired LAN connection. Wifi speed is usually the bottleneck when using a wireless connection (wireless N 300 mbps).
- Easy to setup and easy to use interface.

Cons: - USB 3.0 port on the front does not detect USB 3.0 flash drive. This drive works fine on the rear 2.0 ports and USB 2.0 flash drive works fine on front 3.0 port (hopefully fixed in future firmware).
- Mixed success in getting the SD card reader to recognize cards (One 4GB SDHC card works fine, another brand 4GB SDHC card does not).
- Two hard drives can not be configured as separate network drives. It will be either one large JBOD or a RAID configuration. I would like to have two drives configured to operate independently (maybe a future firmware fix).

Other Thoughts: I wanted to add a NAS to my network for basic storage at a low cost. Most NAS functions on routers are fairly slow and to upgrade a router to one with decent NAS performance is fairly pricey. If you just want basic NAS storage for a home network, the KD20 works well. If you need more advanced features/flexibility, you may want to look elsewhere.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Good, Slower Than Expected

Pros: Great price, transfer speed is somewhat slow at an average of 40MBps,

Cons: slow for booting, for drive recognition, slow for transfer, have to wait about 90 seconds to be able to open a folder while unit is in sleep mode.

GUI is somewhat antiquate,

Other Thoughts: Great Design
