1 out of 5 eggsSTOP

Pros: none

Cons: This product REQUIRES you to connect it to the internet and manage it in every from an internet portal. Thats stupid. There is NO option for managing the device locally.
I for one an not interested in being forced to have an internet connection nor do i want my data exposed to the internet.

Other Thoughts: I repeat. You cannot manage this locally!

1 out of 5 eggsAbsolutely Terrible Product

Pros: Neweggs service was great as usual

None: this product is unusable

Cons: Using this as a file server for my TV shows and ripped movies steaming through my Win7 box to output on my Xbox360 through media center. Works fine when the media was on my PC but nothing but problems on the Stora.. From unsupported file formats to many many other issues.

- The web GUI you have to use constantly freezes while trying to load information about the contents of the folders.
- After a day and half of use and not touching any folder permissions (because you cant edit these) I can no longer modify or delete files through Windows Explorer.
- This makes you use the web GUI in which took me 35 minutes to delete 3 files because I had to let it lock up 5 different times before it would let me continue browsing files.
- No free/web/email support from Netgear (35$ a call to india)
- Connecting to the Stora over the provided web functionality is token at best. You cannot actually stream anything because no file formats are supported (you can download though)

Other Thoughts: I've worked in the I.T. field for 15 years so I would say my skill set in this area is very advanced and honestly I can't even imagine how difficult and frustrating this product would be for a novice.

2 out of 5 eggsWent back - caused blue screen of death

Pros: Three year warranty, known manufacturer that might be here three years from now, phone number you can call, gigabit ethernet, win 7 support.

Cons: My Win 7 desktop computer that had been utterly stable became unstable after installing the software and mounting the drives. The software driver causes blue screen of death. Once I uninstalled it everything is fine. This is on a genuine Intel mother board, genuine Intel chip, highest grade memory, no overclocking, nothing unusual. That's bunk software!

The system is also totally proprietary. I got it to allow me to mount the drives. Defaults to disk mirroring, so you only get half the space. That's not really horrid so much as a surprise.

You can't use it to read your old data. It will format down your drives, even if they are in the previous Netgear unit's format.

Other Thoughts: I bought this at a competing brick and mortar store. The sales droid says it was both a USB and an ethernet enclosure and that it would allow me to directly drop in and hot swap drives for backup of my computer. Nope. The drives format down to something completely non-Microsoft. I believe this is an embedded Linux box. The USB connector was not to hook to a computer but to allow you to plug in a thumb drive or a printer. Whoopee. Not at all what I needed.

I have two very nice looking, solid and reliable units that were the immediate predecessor to this one. Netgear didn't do Windows 7 support on the software for the predecessor unit. I don't trust Netgear to do Windows 8 support. Think that's trivia? It's not. Get a new computer a year from now and it will be on Win 8.

4 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: Compact, quiet, easy to install drives and set up RAID
Gigabit ethernet
Simple browser based configuration
Lots of features for the price
You don't have to actually use all the Stora services/features if you just want a 'dumb' NAS

Cons: Had trouble updating firmware to latest version. Browsing through the Netgear forums, this appears to be common. Netgear has a Diagnostic and Repair Tool to find and replace bad system files. After running this the updates went well. The latest firmware adds the ability to accees the NAS without the box needing an internet conneciton - a silly requirement in the first place.

Other Thoughts: Over a month later it's still running well. Using two relatively cheap Hitachi 2TB SATA drives in a mirrored RAID to store my movies and music.
