1 out of 5 eggsRpoof of the excellent attention to detail of Netgear Support

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: none

Cons: Take a look through the reviews. The responses from Netgear support cant even get the names of the reviewers correct. Dont worry this will continue though the process of trying to get your brick to work. Definitely my LAST Netgear purchase.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsDont even

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Cant think of a single one

Cons: Don't even buy this hunk of junk unless you want to find out about the wonders of excellent Netgear support. This is dripping with sarcasm. Unless you want to wait on windows to delete something or are looking for poor performance.

Other Thoughts: Stop do not order. Buy a n inexpensive board and put linux on it and set up a samba server.

5 out of 5 eggsMuch Improved ReadyNAS

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: I received this unit as part of NETGEAR's F&F program. I hope this review will help you understand Netgear's Readynas 104 and its previous generation unit the (Infrant ReadyNAS NV+).

About 7 years ago, I purchased Infrant's ReadyNAS NV+. I have been using it continuously since then for streaming music (FLAC files) and backing up my data. I spent a lot of time configuring it and getting it to work in the manner that I wanted. During the 7 years it only had one technical issue: the power supply died. I talked with Netgear support and they agreed to ship me a new power supply because of known issues. My only complaint with the ReadyNAS NV+, other than the power supply issue already noted, is that the fan was really loud. Therefore, after some time, I re-purposed it to only do backups during the night time since I didn't like hearing the loud fan.

Fast forward to today: I was excited to test the ReadyNAS 104. First up, when I powered it up, the fan was quiet! I could definitely live with the unit on 24x7. In addition, the power supply is now external to the unit. Perhaps this is a negative for some people as it's more space outside the unit. However, if the power supply does fail, it would be easy to replace vs taking apart the unit and installing a new power supply.

The other HUGE improvement vs the Infrant was a much better firmware. The firmware is modern, intuitive, and easy to use. I was able to setup the ReadyNAS in about 20 minutes. I am using the ReadyNAS for two purposes right now:

1) Using Crashplan's software to backup to my ReadyNAS unit. In order to do this (because of Crashplan's software limitations) one needs to read the directions on the following site:

http://epiphenie.com/tutorials/use-crashplan-to-automatically-backup-to-a-network-drive-nas

One more tip is that one can map the ReadyNAS to a map drive in Windows by making sure you add your workgroup. See:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23151/related/1

2) I am using the device to FTP files. The built in FTP works like a charm and it is very simple to setup your own FTP server.

Overall, I am very happy with the new ReadyNAS unit. With the improved firmware and design, I am looking forward to using it for years to come.

Cons: I need more hard drives to fill it up!

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Support

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: USB 3.0
Twin gigabit Enet that let's you double the effective transfer speeds

Cons: Mine will not let you see all the shares ... the main one is locked out. Bought extended warranty to help fix, and they cannot ... say that they cannot duplicate, and will only put an engineer on it Mon-Fri, but I'm not available Mon-Fri, so I spend $150 for someone to day "huh ... sucks to be you". The software is very confusing ... I had an Infrant and loved it ... NetGear bought Infrant and the "easy software people" obviously got fired.

Other Thoughts: Looking for a replacement so I can pull all the data off, reset EVERYTHING, and dump it.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price.. might want to spend more if you can though

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: I like the user interface for device. It's simple to use for as complex as some of the tasks.

I had a little bit of a problem figuring out the security permissions. This is probably because of the previous device that I had which it was very easy to give the "world" permission to your files. This device, I'm not sure that's even possible. You have to have an account and then the access is granted by "share" as you want to configure it I don't have a need for this so moved on once I figured it out (just gave me permission to everything).

RAID has gotten easier over the years. This device does a good job of letting you just snap in a new drive and it handles the configuration for you.

Cons: There are several of these.

The one that is the most important is I've already sent email to netgear@newegg.com and got zero response. None.

My biggest complaint is that from what I can tell the ReadyNAS App doesn't run on a 64bit Mac (which is my primary device). At least that's what I kept seeing on the Internet. This is a definite downer for me as I'd really like to try out the ReadyDrop functionality. I did see something about using an application called TunTap to get the software to work on a 64bit Mac but it didn't seem to work for me. Regardless, I shouldn't have to install something like that (it's an unsupported utility) to use the application.

Next on my list would be the transfer rate. I'm transferring about 130GB of files and some of them are very small. I've been at this for well over a week. At times I've seen less than a 4KB/Sec transfer rate with the utility I'm using (FreeFileSync). And I have a stable work. It's wired from the laptop to the NAS device. Sometimes the files transfer fast (the bigger files) but if it's a smaller file it takes forever. This might be normal with a RAID 5 device.

Finally, I had a heck of a time getting the ReadyNAS app to work on my phone. I think it's because I didn't have the port open on my firewall so this could be my fault. The only thing I'd say about that is the documentation doesn't say anything about opening the port (but I could have missed it really). I'm going to test this a little more tomorrow when I'm at work.

Other Thoughts: Overall it's a decent device. I think it's a little pricey with all the problems I'm having with it but I never really saw a good review of any of these types of device until it got really expensive.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: After getting the device up and running it seems to work well

Cons: Setup for the diskless device is NON-trivial. The hard drives I put into it would cause an error message that kept the device from showing on the network. Only after googling for a few hours did I find a blog that showed me how to fix that issue and finally got the device working properly.

Other Thoughts: Netgear needs to work on the the setup UI and put in special instructions for users of the diskless system.
Also the UI for the BTsync needs to be tweaked

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible, Horrible device

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: All in one package (if everything worked).

Cons: Cr@ptastic performance. HORRIBLE as a media server, even with Plex installed. Won't maintain connection, wireless or ethernet when trying to stream video.

Other Thoughts: Stay away. Far away. Get something else.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsReally

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: Not one yet.

Cons: Trying to copy some folders that are 51 gb in size. Windows says it is going to take 23 hours. Just got it. About to box this pile of dung up and send it back. Network keeps disconnecting and I am hard wired through my router.

4 out of 5 eggsFollowup review after a year.

This review is from: NETGEAR ReadyNAS 104 (RN10400-100NAS) Diskless System Network Storage

Pros: -Speed
-Functions
-Connectors
-Support

Cons: -Price (but fair for market niche)

Other Thoughts: This is a follow up review for this item. After a year of ownership I am happy and want to share a positive experience.

The first thing I would say is that this is a good device if you manage your expectations. It is a dedicated device and not a multipurpose server. The specs are not conducive to a lot of memory and processor intensive applications. I personally am running only the Plex app in addition to it's normal functions. If you absolutely need this device to do more then spend the money on the i3 1gb model.

As for the speed concern, on a home switch gigabit network I get ~30mbs throughput with 7200rpms. I use a competitors nas as backup storage targets at work on managed Cisco switches and get roughly the same throughput.

I have had no problems with the USB ports and have used them to maintain a backup of my xraid array.

Finally, I wanted to share my experience with support. About 2 months in I started experiencing occasional hard locks on my unit. Through the year they became progressively worse. I troubleshot as time permitted and finally contacted tech support detailing everything that happened and all troubleshooting I had performed. They were friendly, fast, responsive to my issues. I was able to replace the unit with very little hassle. They even provided cross shipping! They also followed up after I shipped back the failing unit. I can't say enough about the support, especially in a day when most companies make theirs as horrible as possible. The new unit has been chugging along with no reboots for months now. I could not be happier.

In closing I will say that for the price this thing is great as a storage device. Keep in mind it is not an app server per se and while I have had no issues using the replacement as a Plex server I still think it is worth the money as a storage target.
