1 out of 5 eggsJunk Update

Pros: I finally got it to work and in all fairness, it was my router not applying DHCP.

Replaced router and low and behold got it connected.

However, from a stable connectivity and access viewpoint, my Junk assessment still stands. I have loaded the software on 4 different devices and each one has their own set of issues.

Really an amatuer attempt.

Cons: Software and accessibility everything.

Needs a full software upgrade and revamp

Other Thoughts: I am going to try and play with it, but I don't have high hopes unless Toshiba gets serious.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: good price for 2TB storage access on a network, so you can store/share your data anywhere you go.
it is a personal cloud that works fast enough and is easy to use.

Cons: software need improvement to be more user friendly

1 out of 5 eggsSoftware and documentation issues

Pros: Price

Cons: After purchasing ther were additional reviews indicating that this product software has issues. Additionally, there is extremely poor documentaiton. Will look for something else to purchase.

Other Thoughts: Look for hassle-free storage solutions. Look for something different.

3 out of 5 eggsdocumentation sucks

Pros: good storage and can make the data available on a network so that data can be retrieved from a remote location (like a smart phone). Easy to hook up to my network. Easy to backup computers with the included software.

My order was processed and I received it across country in three days!!! (ordered it on Sunday and received it the Wednesday before Thanksgiving). NEWEGG ROCKS!!!

Cons: The documentation is poor. After you install the device, you install the software from the included CD. Eventually you look at the software to find out that the included software is out of date. You can upload music/video/photos/files to the cloud but then the Canvio cloud device proceeds to process the files. While this is happening, you can not locally connect to the device with the included software (but remote connects work). If you reset the cloud to its initial state and try to upload data with their software, it does not see the files that it was able to update before the reset. Attempts to read the manual on the CD takes you to a web site and the first thing that you find out is the software that you initially installed is out of date. When you look at the manual, it does a basic description of how the software interface works, but could use some details like examples of how the upload files software works. The registration link in the instructions does not work!!!! If you upload say your music to the device and you restart the software, it can not find the device even though you can link your browser to it but it can find the device once the onboard software is done with its sorting. If you give up and restore the device to its initial state (and advanced settings function), the software will not find music/video/photos/files that you were able to install before doing the reset. The software does have an option to display files, but this just seems to open an explorer window linked to the device and you have to hunt for the file that you are looking for somewhere on the device.

The backup function performs a backup but it does not tell you what it is backing up or even give you a choice of what to back up. I don't know if it only backed up my C: drive or if it also backed up my D: drive or the CD in my CD drive.

The software opens a new window when you want to see your music/video/photo but the software has sorted it into a configuration that is different than what I expected. For example, instead of having my pictures sorted per the folders that I had them in, it sorts the pictures by date.

The software needs work to make it more user friendly.

If the software does not see the device on initialization, the instructions says that it will report an error but it simply give a login window that requires a pin (for remote login which has to be enabled in the software first). If it finds the device, it asks for a user name and a password, this is how the initial user ID is created.

Other Thoughts: If you want cloud storage that you control and if something happens, you can simply take it with you if you have to leave, then this may work for you. It will backup PCs running windows and it even runs time machine for your MAC. Backing up music/video/photo/files from specific locations needs work if you try to use the included software. There is an option to open an explorer window and you can paste your files into it, but if you try to follow the included software's use of backup structures, you will find a new long tree is created for each time it perform and upload.

If you are a computer novice or needs someones help for new things, then this is not the product for you (until they update the software). If you know what you are doing on a computer, you can make this work for you with a little work.

I have performed several computer backups on 2 computers and it seems very straight forward (and I hope that it backed up the data that I wanted to) but I have yet needed to create its recovery disk and perform a recovery on a computer. I will try to update or repost if the software is updated or documentation is provided to make the software more user friendly/useable.

It is not what I was expecting when I ordered it but I can make it work for me.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk!!!

Pros: None

Cons: Received and immediately prompts me for a Login and password - on a supposedly brand new device.

No way to reset and no tech support - only defective product claims phone support - Which I am sure they are very busy.

Sending it back immediately.

Other Thoughts: this is some hobby device Toshiba is OEMing from some other esoteric company.

Spray and pray product dump.

Stay away!
