5 out of 5 eggsWorks great for a NAS

Pros: Web interface
Network settings
Remote access

Cons: Network Assistant launch at login on Mac OS X a bit long for when connected through ethernet (1:30 minutes)

Other Thoughts: I've updated the firmware of the 1 To Network Space 2 to the latest version (2.2.25), as well as the Network Assistant (1.5.7) which manages the NAS through software and a web interface.

I've connected it through ethernet on an Airport Extreme, which shares my network on wifi. I store my music and videos on it and Plex Media Server uses it to share my Media on my TV and mobile devices.

You can set the eco-management settings (from never to auto-sleep 20 minutes), you can download torrents on it and you can remotely share it via FTP/SFTP or MyNas by LaCie. The settings for the torrents are limited, but they do work, even with Magnet files.

So far, it works great, haven't had any issue and I like the fact it's being updated and that the web interface is responsive (on OS X 10.7.3)

1 out of 5 eggsWARNING corrupts large files

Pros: Would be a decent drive for the price if it worked properly

Cons: WARNING!!! This device corrupts large data files (seems like greater than 3-4GB). I have the 2TB version and have been in contact with LaCie support for more than 2 months, and still no solution. After many firmware upgrades, the device has gone from corrupting every large file to only corrupting about 30% of them. Don't know which is worse.

Other Thoughts: Customer support initially tried to be helpful, but the last two responses were "I would like you to know that I am following up currently with the R&D department and I am still awaiting their response about the next course of action to take, and it should be resolved soon." When you are in the business of storage, I would think data corruption issues would be dealt with extremely urgently.

4 out of 5 eggsPerfect workhorse

Pros: Added 2TB external USB drive for a total of 3TB space. Low power consumption, only 19W including the USB drive. (my desktop consumes 180W); great for p2p file sharing. No problem for 2 years of non-stop usage. Supports web access, ftp and Windows share. Supports Chinese file names. Local file transfer rate is 250 Mbps with Win7 PC 1000Mbps connection, web transfer through external ftp is 20 Mbps, file transfer through IE9 is the slowest, about 8 Mbps. Since the unit has no fan, it is very quite.

Cons: Documentation is not clear on setting up all the features, needed to do my own research, trial and error to get the maximum out of the LaCie. It only allows 6 users and 1 Openshare, which limits the number of people who want to share this 24/7 file server. File transfer rate slows down big time (less than 1 Mbps) when 3 people are transferring files at the same time.

5 out of 5 eggsperfect solution

Pros: gigabit, torrent support, usb support (expansion/print), allocate space to double as standard usb drive, and DLNA. now my desktop 'server' no longer has to be on 24/7 which saves energy.

Cons: mine came w/ FW 1.2.5, and upgraded to 1.2.9

DO NOT upgrade to 1.2.91 if you have a 2tb usb attached - it wouldn't mount. i had to flash back to 1.2.9 and all is well.

Other Thoughts: i plugged a seagate expansion drive (2tb) into the NAS to share a total of 3tb w/in my network. it gives 3 network folders: myshare, openshare, and usbshare. with the external usb attached, i get a fourth folder 'usb expansion' and i mapped all four as assigned drive letters. the openshare folder is the one that'll show up in the dlna media server. the torrent client is transmission 1.73. moving files is much faster using the Lacie Dashboard from within the NAS itself.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Hard Drive

Pros: Have had this hard drive for almost 2 years now. Solid device with no issues or problems.

Cons: Rather slow transfer rate.

Other Thoughts: Very dependable. The only thing I don't like is you have to switch the HD on and off with the power button. It won't turn on remote when it detects it's been plugged in or the computer is turned on.

1 out of 5 eggsLacie= Lazy STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: The only pro to this device is that Newegg is an honorable company and have great return policies.

Cons: Device runs very slow, Lacie assistant software locks up on a Mac. Even though I statically set the NAS IP address it is still not able to be located. This NAS is horrible!!!! The NAS functioned properly for maybe a week then the software locked up once and the drive followed immediately afterward.

Other Thoughts: I am a Network Engineer by trade with a B.A. in Internet-working Technology, Cisco CCNA, Apple Essentials 10.6, and Security Plus certifications just for a little background of myself. This NAS is junk. It worked fine for almost a solid week but one night I logged into my iMac and Time Machine couldn't find the NAS. So, I spent about 20 mins troubleshooting and finally managed for it to show up on the network. And ever since this has been the case on either my iMac or my Macbook Pro the NAS cannot be found at any given time. I set the IP statically on the NAS and when I try to ping it I get no response ever! The software is a joke as well as the NAS. I am sorry that I am not as detailed as I would like to write but I am P.O' ed right now and can't think straight. Please Please Please take heed of everyone's warnings and stay away from this awful paper weight. Use your hard earned money else where. Actually you just be better carrying a huge external drive everywhere than this NAS!

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to setup and use

Pros: Easy setup utility and browser app. Even when transferring files, did not notice any lag while browsing the internet or playing games.

Cons: Only 100Mbps, but that's what it says it is. So, otherwise, no issues so far.

1 out of 5 eggsNetwork Space 2

Pros: Attractive design
low price
hardware seems fine

Cons: According to the manufacturer, the software included with drive is designed for for a UBS storage device, not an NAS. In order to have full functionality as an NAS you need to buy another program for $70. I returned this because it would not work on my Windows machine.

Other Thoughts: The software also caused one of my Mac computers to freeze up- the first time this has happened in my 5 year experience with Macs- it's buggy and quirky. Although the hardware seems fine, the product is only as good as its software, which is clearly deficient. It has cost many hours to try and make this right. Buy something else.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Good for USB Drive

Pros: Sleek design
Easy setup
Fast transfer speeds

Cons: Confusing limitations
Buggy web interface for NAS
Difficult to access files outside network

Other Thoughts: It's not advertised with these limitations, but after talking with LaCie tech support, here is what they finally told me are the limitations when connecting via USB or ethernet:
"We do not advertise that the unit is the same as USB connected unit however. Its primary function is NAS and you will not be able to alter that. The hardware and chipset included are only capable of a NAS with an ability to allocate space to USB."
They also don't tell you that you can only allocate up to HALF of the storage space for USB access, while the rest of the 1 TB must remain accessible through ethernet only. Time Machine does work with the NAS as advertised, but I use Carbon Copy Cloaner, and that DOES NOT work via NAS, hence the reason I wanted to use the drive via USB in the first place.
