2 out of 5 eggsHDD failed after two years

Pros: Small compact unit, space saving
Backup software (although I didn't use it)

Cons: Kind of noisy and runs warm.
Goes off line periodically, perhaps a sleep feature.
Hard drive failed after 2 years of low to moderate use.

Other Thoughts: It was a refurbished unit so I shouldn't have put too much reliance on it. I am at risk of losing all 1.5 TB of my precious data. Preparing to back up soon.
Wonder is WD or Buffalo will honor a replacement unit

2 out of 5 eggsWOW, Slow

Pros: Price was right.

Cons: When I pulled the NAS from the box it was rattling. Apparently the the flimsy plastic tabs had broken off of the hard drive bays release. I transferred 78gigs to it and it took almost a day and a half. Very slow.

Other Thoughts: Even though it is slow it still streams movies just fine.

3 out of 5 eggsOK for the money

Pros: 1. Has a GBE NIC, as well as USB2 (if needed)
2. Reasonably easy to set up
3. Inexpensive (especially as a refurb unit)
4. Supports jumbo frames
5. Reliable (formatted as RAID-1) - so far

Cons: Not very fast when used on a GBE network.

I get about 23-25 MBytes/sec with Win 8 64 on a ASUS GBE network (wired) with 7K jumbo frames enabled. While the drives themselves probably can push about 50-70 MBytes/sec (one large file transfer), the CPU of the unit is too underpowered to keep up, which is quite disappointing.

Other Thoughts: While good for the money, and reasonable as a mass backup unit, it is a bit slow for large file movement for live systems such as for VM storage.

Recommend looking elsewhere (maybe their pro unit) if you want full drive speed from your NAS.

2 out of 5 eggsOH MY Goodness

Pros: It's a refurb and looks really nice. The refurb price is nice and it does work. It comes set up in raid zero configuration but I bought it for the Raid 1 configuration. I had lost most of my video library due to a disk failure and want the Raid 1 features.
I turned it on and it set itself up and worked. I transferred a file and it was SLOW!! I then configured it in the RAID 1 configuration and it took 14 hours to check the disks. I also went to the web site and got the firmware update which installed as expected.

Cons: Now to the bad parts. This thing is SLOW!! The top speed for transferring a file has been 10.3MB. I have connected it to my router and to the switch, it's still slow. If I transfer a video file from a wireless device it is super slow, under 1MB transfer rate. It took 3 hrs to transfer a 4.35 GB file from my laptop.
I tried steaming a video file while uploading a different file. That didn't work, the streamed video kept locking up, stopping and starting.

Other Thoughts: It came with Western Digital Green drives. I have it in the DLNA mode but don't think this will work for what I need as a video/media storage for my TV/WDLive video setup.
Unless I can make it "come alive" it may well end up being a backup storage drive.

4 out of 5 eggsBuffalo refurbished.4TB NAS can't be beat!

Pros: Well out of the box, it worked as expected, set up was easy and painless....almost...see below.

This is a nice little dual drive NAS, although you only get half of the space for storage, (depending on RAID setup) in a RAID 0 but two TB of the 4TB it comes with, can generally suit most media storage needs unless they are archiving, then of course this is not the device to use.

If you are looking for something to consolidate ALL your media, from videos, music, pictures and more, to be available to ALL your devices, and clear all of this from your pc hard disks, you will feel like you got new leases on HDD's in your pc for all the space these files can consume.... while being readily available to everything in your home, if you have a "smart" TV, Phone, all PC's and any other devices you might wish to add to your network to access these files. OF course it can be a daily or constant back up device as well, but that would be redundantly redundant! LOL!

Top all of that off with fast transfer rates, and I expect (will report back if otherwise) read speeds capable of streaming HD video without hesitations jitter or buffering pauses.

At more than half the original price this became about the best deal per TB and including the nas-ware built in to the device's firmware, thereby assuring there will be no RAID DROP OUTS expected, and will report back if this turns out to be wrong.

Cons: This unit, due to being a Refurb doesn't come with any worthwhile documentation, or software for that matter, although of the two pieces of printed paper it came with indicated all of this was available through downloads on the website, the process of locating and downloading them was tedious and annoying to have to repeatedly fill the same fields after verifying the serial number of select downloads, instead of doing so once and then selecting the individual downloads. It often behooves the mind how "UN-technological" many tech company sites really are!

So they lost one egg for the hassles required to be endured to get those downloads, but in no way was a deal breaker.

Other Thoughts: There aer no more available, if there were i wouldn't hesitate to get another to stripe instead of RAID 0 and make number two an RAID 1 and improve the overall performance wile not sacrificing so much resources on redundancy. I think it would work this way anyway!
