Features
The Business Storage 4-bay NAS includes government-grade hardware encryption technology that helps protect data stored on the NAS. When you access files remotely, the 4-bay NAS also helps protect your data-in-flight with SSL/TLS, the same technology that secures your information when banking online.

The 4-bay NAS features a Universal Storage Module (USM) slot that makes it incredibly simple and cost-effective to create off-site backups of your data. Start by docking a Seagate Backup Plus portable drive in the USM slot. With a touch of a button, you can transfer large files at speeds up to 3x faster than USB 2.0. Undock your portable drive and data, and you're ready to take your files with you or to a secure, off-site location.

The USM slot is also convenient for photographers, videographers and other professionals who routinely bring back large files from the field. Use a Backup Plus portable drive throughout the day and when you're back at the office, slide the portable drive into the USM slot and-with a touch of a button-all of your work is transferred to a designated folder on the 4-bay NAS

4 out of 5 eggsRough start, but solid performance for HTPC jukebox

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: The features were actually quite a bit more expansive than I was expecting.

Setup was a bit rocky and took me the better part of two days to transfer my media to empty out the drives (need to toss empty drives in this NAS box).

I have all 4 bays full using JBOD providing storage of my digital content for 2 HTPCs and a Plex Media Server (for Chromecast). "Streaming" very high bitrate media from this thing is NOOOO problem. My stress test was roughly 4 different 20gb MKV files. Casting from the Plex Media Server to Chromecast (while playing a file on that pc as well) whilst streaming to the two HTPCs I was thoroughly impressed there was no bottlenecking and everything streamed just fine.

2 NIC's for load balancing works great if you setup the balancing elsewhere.

The USM/ USB 3.0 "one-touch" backup is EXTREMELY convenient.

Going to save me money in the long run since I don't have to have a full blown media server running full time anymore.

Cons: Load balancing is TERRIBLE, don't even bother using it on the box itself. Split it up and manage it yourself.

Definitely needs a firmware update first thing. The webUI is very sluggish until the update is performed.

Firmware check doesn't work, manually check and you'll find a newer version.

The USM/USB 3.0 "one-touch" backup option could use some retooling feature wise and it's a bit slower than a network upload.

The scheduled power on/power off feature isn't very flexible.

No file management from within the webUI.

Other Thoughts: All cons aside, I'm not the least disappointed I purchased this.

Uploads are a bit slower than I'd prefer but as long as the down speeds are fast, who cares.

The bundled backup software is basically Acronis 2011 Home Backup with some Seagate skins on it, but it gets the job done and it comes with 10 licenses (which never seem to get "used").

1 out of 5 eggsDissapoint, almost useless

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Low power consumption, 4TB drive support, inexpensive.

Cons: Cheap(in a bad way), constant admin interface issues, constant NFS export issues and malfunctions, very poor windows nfs support(yes, cifs works, but that is not why I bought it).

Other Thoughts: I have had this unit for over a year, and am about to take a sledgehammer to it.
First, I have no direct access to its operating system to look at logs or manually adjust anything.
Second, it has CONSTANT issues with the admin interface available via http. I literally have to reboot it every time I want to make a config change, and then it is back to unusable within 5 minutes.
Third, NFS support is terrible on it. Every time I have an NFS issue, I am ask, "Why not just use CIFS?". I am extremely tired of explaining why I use NFS instead of CIFS, and feel no need to justify usage of a feature that I paid for so that it is fixed.

I am incredibly unhappy with this NAS. Usually I avoid posting extremely negative reviews, but I want to save other folks a steaming pile of frustration.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks Well - a few annoyances with iSCSI

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Inexpensive. Web configuration is pretty straightforward. You put the drives in , configure them, and it all works pretty well. I use this with Centos 6 as the iSCSI initiator with one way CHAP.

Cons: The iSCSI part needs work. This only supports one iSCSI target according to Seagate Technical support. However, if you setup the first iSCSI target as a Block device, you can add additional targets at File targets. So you can add more that one target. So the product, the docs and tech support don't agree:
- Product: more than one target, first one Block, others File
- Docs: only show how to add one File target
- Tech Support, Only one target, either Block or File

Other Thoughts: Their tech support was a little arrogant, which I don't normally mind if the guy is correct. He went on about the 2 TB device limit being a function of the motherboard. And of course the motherboard has nothing to do with it. The 2 TB is a limitation with MBR which you can overcome with GPT, both of which work. No big deal, but these product can get pretty technical. You don't have to know everything, but do your homework and don't talk out your a**.

Oh - static IP addresses are the way to with this. DHCP Client took too long, and the Centos Init scripts kept failing.

2 out of 5 eggsWorthless for storage

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Its a hard drive.

Cons: Well if i wanted something to set here and take 24 hours to just upload to i would have never purchased this unit. It only uploads at 35.7mb/second thats slower than my usb drives... Also Seagate technical support has no answers to why it is so slow.

Other Thoughts: Im in the media field and this says it is used mostly for dlna and at these kind of slow speeds I don't see how this could ever work.

3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Price, size, flexibility. Set this unit up with 4 three TB Seagate NAS drives in RAID 10. Took about two days for it to complete volume setup. Discovery software worked fine in finding unit and setup.

Cons: Included BlackArmor Backup 2011 will not install in Windows 8.1. Using compatibility settings will not even allow software to install. Can't fully use unit until I get backup software that works with Win 8.1.

Other Thoughts: Device might deserve higher rating, but until I am able to fully use it as I had planned with the Windows 8.1 systems on my network I won't know how well it works.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Greyghost,

We would like to thank you for your review of the Seagate Business Storage 4-Bay NAS.

We would recommend using Windows 8.1 File History instead of our BlackArmor backup software. This should work to backup to our drive.

1 out of 5 eggsProblems with WD drives

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: The price would be right on this box. I was just looking for a strait-forward small business NAS box.

Cons: I cannot get 4 drives working reliably. When I reboot, a different set of drives comes up. never more than two are 'claimed'. When I attempt to claim 'foreign' drives it doesn't work and I get no error message. I have 4 WD red 1TB drives and attempting RAID-5.

Other Thoughts: I am disappointed because after working with it for a few days I'm getting nowhere.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear KelClif,

This reply is from Seagate Support. We noticed your review and wanted to apologize for the problems experienced with your Seagate Business Storage drive.

Please ensure that the Business NAS has the latest firmware version installed, as outdated firmware might be the cause of the symptoms you described in your review:

http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/business-nas-4bay-firmware-master-dl/

Preparing the drives with the DISKPART command might eliminate the detection issues experienced with the WD drives. Install each of the drives internally in a Windows system, then reference the guidelines provided in the following article to perform the process:

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/207837en?language=en_US

For a list of drives that are compatible with the Business NAS, please visit:

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!!!

This review is from: Seagate STBP100 Diskless System Business Storage 4-Bay NAS

Pros: Easy to setup and get working. Backups were very simple to setup on the clients and have been working great so far and do not expect any issues. Email notifications setup was straight forward as well. NAS interface is very easy to use and understand.

I just put in Regular 1.5TB drives as opposed to the NAS certified ones but seems to work great, maybe a little slow.

Cons: Cannot expand an already created volume that is already created.
