Pros: Easy Setup

Cons: no SSH access, Horrible web console, do not support plex, bad designed media server, weak tech support

Other Thoughts: I have had a couple of issues with this NAS already and I would not recommend it to anyone. When I first bought it everything seemed to be ok, until I tried to setup the Media Server. It basically gave me no options to manage my media (Movies, TV Shows, Music, etc). It was basic a bunch of files all together in one folder when you connected your TV to the media server. I called support and they told me they did not offer that feature on their media server (WOW!!!). I then had a media server that could not organize media. I ended up using PLEX on my machine and just using the NAS as storage, but that costs me money in power every day. This NAS does not support any other media server since you cannot SSH to it without hacking it (which would void the warranty).
My second issue happened recently when I ran out of disk space on this NAS. I realized that my share had the recycle bin feature enabled so everything that I deleted for the past year was actually still stored on the disks. Not a big deal if I could empty it out. I then logged in as admin to the console and tried to delete the 38000 items I had there and it froze the console (tried Firefox, IE and Chrome). I then decided to delete 10 items to test, it froze the console. I then deleted 1 item and it also frozen the console.
I called support and they recommended me upgrading the firmware to the latest version, but since he did not have the firmware release notes (that shows bugs and fixes) he did not even know if that was going to help me. We upgraded, and nothing changed. He then suggested me to move all my data somewhere else and factory reset the NAS. Not even support knows how to fix the issue, resetting the unit is a work around, not a fix. I am sure someone is Seagate knows how to SSH to it to get rid of the recycle bin files, but their tech support is very weak and they have no escalation team.
Horrible media server, horrible software, weak tech support.
DO NOT BUY IT!

2 out of 5 eggsA number of functionalities are missing

Pros: I needed a network drive to access data and media within home network. The 2x2 drive is great for my needs.

Cons: 1. The sleep/wake functionality doesn't work if you try to use in conjunction with low power standby mode.
2. You cannot program the drives to sleep at morning and wake up. I wanted to program the drive to sleep at 7AM (7:00 hrs) and wake at 6:30 PM (18:30 hrs) but no, the lower value cannot be higher than upper value.
3. Due to the "feature" #1, my drive cannot enter a lower power standby in the idle hours (22:30 through 5:30) even if I wanted it to.
4. I am not sure how the drive replication works. I see that a total of two drives are present but I am assuming they self replicate to each other over regular intervals. The guidance is elementary and the interface doesn't go enough into details for me to review or configure.
5. Wake over lan command is something you need to create your own scripts for. For most people, they would have to go the hated way to hit the power button to wake the drives (if sleeping)

Pros: Stable uptime, decent price when you catch a sale.

Cons: The interface makes it difficult to use. Space management is very difficult.

As others have mentioned before, the media server is terrible.

Other Thoughts: I'm a tech guy, so I expected a more professional device to be up my alley by being customizable. I was wrong.

The interface is annoying, and has to different ways to access. You use the fat client to setup and manage backups, and the web interface to review the system and manage storage and features. I wouldn't mind that, except they don't talk to each other. For example, my web interface shows 60% free space, but my fat client shows no more room for backups. There's no way to see the backups to decide what to remove.

And the "help" files linked on the web interface are misleading and unhelpful. For example the "10 steps for getting started" takes you to the general product information about the NAS... There's nothing to help you get started. All the help links are like this; I wanted to read some actual documentation and it's just filler.

I got this on a Black Friday sale thinking I was getting a deal, but I was way wrong. If I had to do it over again, I'd spend the extra $150 and get a more mainstream product.

Pros: Worked like a champ with no issues for 8 months!

Cons: After my second follow-up review back in November, the NAS started dropping out on the network. While watching movies streaming to any device, it would cut out randomly. It would then have to re-index all the files. The unit was not re-booting, just dropping out. It would also happen while running backups at random times, which became very frustrating! I also tried resetting the unit several times at this point and it would not reset!

After running tests from the administration control panel, both drives showed no errors and were passing the tests with no problems. Eventually the NAS stopped working, and when trying to log into the administration settings, only one page would come up stating that drives needed to be cleaned and set-up, yet there were no visible drives to select.

At this point I removed the drives, and tested them with Seagate Seatools. I tested both drives with the DOS version and the Windows version. One drive was completely dead, and the other was showing bad LBA blocks. At this point all data is lost. I am very disappointed with the reliability of this model STBN4000100.

After running this NAS in a climate controlled environment for only 15 months it has become useless, and all data has been lost.

Other Thoughts: A new firmware update was released in March, version 2014.00319. While it installed fine prior to the drives failing, it did not resolve any of the dropping off the network problems I mentioned above. I suspect the dropping off the network and re-indexing of files was due to the hard drives starting to fail.

Also on the specific page where you download the firmware, there is a PDF release notes file called Version 2014.00319 release notes which has not been updated with any information as to what the new firmware fixed or improved. It only lists previous firmware versions and fixes.

Pros: Fast, easy to use, easy to setup. I am running it on a Gigabit network and it is fast. I would give it 5 stars if it wasnt for the Media Server.

Cons: The only issue I really see if the media server. Don’t get me wrong, it does work, but it does not organize your media as Serviio or Plex do. It combines all your videos into one bucket, which is kind inefficient if you have thousands of movies and TV shows like I do. It is almost impossible to find anything.

I ended up keeping my Serviio running on my PC and changing the library location to my shared folder in the NAS, which forces me to leave my PC on at all times now.

Other Thoughts: Seagate needs to improve their media server if they want to compete.

Pros: It looks nice

Cons: Slow. Cannot Access.

Other Thoughts: I bought this for surveillance camera storage. Ran through the setup procedure, configured username/password, and was setting up the cameras. My camera software wants multiple users, one for each camera recording, so while creating new users for each camera, the NAS kicked me out of the configuration GUI. I tried to log back in with my saved username/password, no go. Tried stock username/password, no go. Followed "factory reset" instructions, no change.

NOT very happy with this device. Hopefully Newegg will return it, Seagate has very poor troubleshooting on their site.

5 out of 5 eggs8 Month Follow-up!

Pros: I have had this NAS running 24/7, and have used it daily since my first review on 3/17/2013. A large portion is now dedicated primarily for serving media throughout my home network. The rest is for data backups.

I have had no issues with the unit running on a gigabit LAN within my home. The only time I did have to reboot was when I updated to the newer firmware which was released in August!

One portion is allocated for dumping data from a surveillance system hard drive, by doing this I have been able to double the amount of real time video capture data that is accessible to me.

For me at least this unit has been rock solid stable!

Cons: None at all!

Other Thoughts: New Firmware Version 2013.60311 was released in August 2013. I was able to update my Seagate NAS with no problems at all.

SAMBA performance improvement of up to 10%

Bug Fixes include:
a. Ability to delete user accounts.
b. Dependability copy large files on AFP shares.
c. Recycle Bin able to handle files over 128 characters.

e. Specific NAS identifier for email alerts (helpful for admins who maintain
multiple NAS products).

Cons: Not super Fast. Media Server Disconnects occasionally.

Other Thoughts: Descent box for the price when i purchased it. I have the new business storage, as well as i support two of the previous version blackArmor NAS. Not bad little boxes for SOHO.

There could be a variety of reasons for the slow network performance. First, please make sure that your computer is connected to your router with a CAT-6 cable and that you are not using WiFi. WiFi is much slower than using an Ethernet cable. Also make sure that your Ethernet card on your computer, router, and any other device connected to your network is using Gigabit ethernet. Your network will only run as fast as your slowest piece of equipment.

Also, check to see if there are any firmware updates available for the drive and your router. Please check for any driver updates from the motherboard manufacturer of your computer. Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware for the Seagate Business NAS:

If you are still experiencing slow transfer rates, try plugging the drive directly into a computer with a Gigabit ethernet card and see if your speeds improve. Should the performance improve, then it is likely there is a network bottleneck unrelated to the drive itself.

1 out of 5 eggsJust don't buy it yet untill a reliable firmware will be released

Pros: Great idea, good hardware, nice design, shall be a perfect unit if it wouldn't be at the beta-test stage. The most reliable part of your network solution shall be backup.

Cons: Absolutely unacceptable approach to firmware - it is not tested in different conditions, no ability to re-flash the old one if the new update has issues, too many different problems (just visit Seagate forum). Factory reset doesn't reset all settings to default values. Useless - if your "successfully flashed" firmware doesn't work properly. The only was to get the default settings if the firmware is bad - RMA brand new product and receive back refurbished one if you can not return it to the store due to any reason.

Other Thoughts: Just don't buy it - at least at the moment. Don't expect you will be able to handle the problems no matter how experienced you are - unless you are a good firmware engineer and would like to fix it's problems on your own.
