5 out of 5 eggsMy own personal cloud!

Pros: Easy to setup. Compact, quiet, and versatile. Had it in a 4 GB config. Looking to upgrade to 6 GB down the road, or perhaps 8 GB if I feel like spending the money on two 4 TB. Setting up the cloud feature was a little daunting, but with time and patience, works really well. Got my friends and family logging into my NAS and streaming photos, music, and video.

Cons: It took me two days to figure out how to open the ports on my new Quantum FiOS router. I have 150 down and I think 50 up. Friends and family says it works great with their devices and pcs. You have to know how to enable port forwarding to get the personal cloud to work for you. Plus sign up for no-ip and just enhances the cloud feature a lot better.

Other Thoughts: The NAS comes completely loaded with all sorts of features. One of them I'm about to test out when I get a hold of an ip camera is to test the built security software that comes with this NAS. I would definitely buy another one down to road for expansion.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat little NAS

Pros: Very quiet, fast access, full of features. Pretty easy to setup.

Cons: Manuals are also worthless. But online help/support is fairly good.

Other Thoughts: I replaced an old laptop that was sharing a 1.5TB USB drive and also being used as a print server. Installed a pair of 1.5TB drives and even though they were not the same brand and neither were on the supported drive list, they work perfectly. Took about a day for the two drives to complete the mirror but during that time I was able to migrate my data from the backup I had made on an external USB drive. I attached a USB hub so I could take advantage of the UPS monitoring feature, share my printer and migrate the data from the external drive without any issues. The NAS serves up data much faster than my old setup and so far has been much more reliable. Couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 eggsGood nas box

Pros: Price, easy setup, size. secure cloud access, IP cam recording app.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Within few weeks, I received the rebate as a credit-card from iomega. Despite all the negative comments about this Nas, I found this is a great product. I never had any issues so far and I had it for almost a year now. I love the fact it has secure cloud access. My only concern is that there is no details document about replacing failed drive. I hope when that happens the NAS will rebuild the fail drive. I have 2 1TB drives installed.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works great, not much more to say.

Cons: There is no real backup software for clients included that I could find. The only options I found were for the EMC software and other cloud based offerings. If it is in there, either I'm blind (possible) or it is buried under other options too deep.

4 out of 5 eggsBricked Updated

Pros: It just sits there, silently waiting for me. Since it was replaced I've no issues with the unit. I can access my files easily from any of my computers which is all I wanted. No more trying to figure out which computer had the files I wanted.

Cons: It took a while to get it where it is(function wise) which is why I deducted the egg. Other than that I'm a happy camper.

Other Thoughts: I Spent a couple weeks with voice chat and tried everything they suggested to no avail. Finally they sent me a replacement unit which worked great out of the box. The real shocker was they paid the shipping both ways. That was a first for me. Would also like to mention the techs I chatted with were a pleasure to work with even if the unit was unrepairable here.

3 out of 5 eggsBasics: OK, Advanced features: fuggedaboutit

Pros: This is my first NAS. Using this for my home. I planned to use this to:
1. Share files among family PC's and iPad.
2. monitor and record surveillance cameras.
3. Stream music to network reciever.

1. Sharing files works well with Samba. I purchased 2 Seagate 1TB drives (these are on Iomega's ix2 qualified list). setup in Raid 1 mirroring. Read performance for a large file on my gigabit ethernet is 50MB/s. Write performance was about 20MB/s. Jumbo frames set to 9000 Bytes.

2. User interface is adequate.
3. SSH can easily be enabled to get to command line.
4. Media streaming works well.
5. camera wall lets you monitor cameras on your network cerntrally. My Trendnet TV_ip551w camera, though not officially supported, does show up in Camera wall when I select it to be a D-link 920.

Cons: 1. FTP server is very slow to respond for login. This is an annoyance for a human, but a disaster for some devices, like my Trendnet IP camera. The camerarefuses to upload captured images to the NAS. That is kind of a disappointment.
2. SSH login is also slow.
3. Web UI is somewhat annoying to use. Logging in is somehwat slow. Insists upon launching the admin UI in a new window, which is bothersome in Chromium.
4. Reported temperature is somewhat high. CPU is often at 150 degrees F, while idling with drives spun down. Oh, and drives spinning down--they don't spin down unless you go into the Twonkymedia server and turn off the auto scan setting. I suppose twonky is continuously scanning the drives for new media, and keeps the disks working. There are instructions on the nt how to do this. using the undocumented port: http://<ip addr>:50599 and then change the "-1" to a "0" on the setup page.

Other Thoughts: For the price on Shell Shocker deal, it could not be beat. However, I think spending a little extra could net a better product, though I am inexperienced with NAS and will probably keep this guy for a while.

4 out of 5 eggsSetup not Easiest. But working now.

Pros: Price: I got it for $69 during a random newegg sale.
Haven't had any issues having the NAS detected on my network.
Delivered backup software (downloaded from seems to be doing its job and was was easy to setup.

Cons: Hard drive installation not straight forward.

Other Thoughts: The setup for this NAS requires technical knowledge. The delivered documentation does not describe the process for installing new drives. I found the instructions on iomega's support site. It requires the use of diskpart in windows, or a similar utility in other OS'es to clean out partition and boot sector info.
Once I did that to my two drives, the NAS didn't format the drives automatically. So, I put in one drive first and it was detected and formatted. Then I updated the firmware and installed the second drive and I gained access to all my storage.
I've only had it for a day and its currently running a back up. I'll update this review once I've had time to test other features.

5 out of 5 eggsNice cheap NAS

Pros: * Has worked perfectly as a NAS I set up for backups of 4 computers at a family member's house for a couple of months now.
* Nice feature set for such a cheap NAS, and iSCSI and everything else I played with worked as expected (used two spare 640GB WD Blacks I had lying around)
* Received my rebate quickly

Cons: * Not absurdly fast, but it's a dual drive NAS for under $100 and I had read a detailed review on SmallNetBuilder so I knew what to expect. More than fast enough for backups, media streaming, etc.

Other Thoughts: * This thing is a steal at $80. I just ordered another one for myself, I'm sure I'll find a user for it somewhere.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work properly with DLINK Cameras as advertised

Pros: Simplistic web user interface

Cons: Advertised and even documented on prominent blogs as supporting DLINK camera in the built-in surveillance application (EMC). Several blogs specifically state that iomega themselves sent the IX2 along with DLINK DSC-930 camera and when tested supposedly worked. I can report that iomega IX2 surveilance app does NOT work properly iomega's own forums are full of people who state they "gave up" trying to make it work.

IX2 will show a DLINK DSC-930 camera in the surveilance app "live wall" but if you click to record it will only ever record ZERO byte files so is worthless for this purpose. Whether it ever worked when blogs were written (over a year ago) and a firmware update broke it, or the testers only ever tested the "live wall" thought it was working and never actually tested the recording function is unclear. It cost me buying multiple DLINK cameras for this purchase which I'm now stuck with past return period because Iomega support is so unresponsive and I really wanted this to work.

Other Thoughts: Iomega support is HORRIBLE. I literally opened a ticket a month ago and they have done NOTHING to resolve the issue except try to blame it on the "cable" i'm using (tried that) despite many others stating this problem exists in the forums (for about 8 months) and clearly if the live wall works (can watch it literally for a hour without interruption) but only the "record" function doesn't, it a software problem. Tried multiple cameras same model every version of their firmware - same result.

Based purely on their support and how they treat their customers, I don't think I'll purchase from iomega/emc/lenovo again. I might initially be jumping to buy another right now based on even with this major feature broken it's not a bad unit otherwise, but the way as a brand new customer I have been completely treated like garbage with the "we already have your money, now go away" attitude when requesting support for a brand new iomega product purchase - I'll hold off purchasing another for now.

1 out of 5 eggsService is non existent

Pros: It worked for a year.

Cons: It died under warranty. First they told me it was not under warranty and then they changed their mind and told me it was under warranty. They sent me an RMA and I sent it back. They received it on Feb. 28, 2013 and as of March 14th they can not find it in their warehouse. Using online chat is useless. I have tried it twice since they received the drive. Now they just sent me another RMA email on an item I already returned.

Other Thoughts: Was a great company. Now I would not buy even a wood pencil from them. Terrible customer support. Terrible is being nice. Service would get one egg, since that is the lowest I can go.
