It says that it's Network Attached Storage, but it really wants to be a server when it grows up. With two terabyte of storage, 256 MB of DDR memory, an Intel IOP RISC processor, an iTunes music server, an unattended download manager for disk and printer sharing, this is not just a hard drive stuck on a network.

It's a 10/100/1000 Mbps network device, handling RAID 0,5, and JBOD, with hot-swappable drives and automatic RAID re-build, this system is great for protecting your computer with backups, or archiving your video and audio sources until they're needed, sharing data between several computers. pretty much anything you can use network storage for, this one will handle it.

USB printer sharing, USB external drive sharing, web-based and FTP-based access make this a network storage system to admire.

Pros: I have been using net filers for the last two years, manly commercial size units at my job. I bought this to store all my personal items, movies and music. I have been quite impressed with it. I have tested out copying lots of items while watching movies and playing music from the platinumNas. I thought the setup was very easy and lets you have a lot of control, with the ACL, active directory support, and Raid configuration. It has the nSync feature which allows you to automatically backup files from another platinumNas or ftp server.

Cons: I wish it had snap shot capability so you could roll back to a previous version on you folders, incase someone accidently deleted or modified a folder. This is a lifesaver when your boss is missing his entire folder, and you can retrieve it in the matter of seconds. I know it advertises automatic raid reconstruction, although I have tested this out and have not been able to get it to work. When I remove a drive with raid 5 it continues to work, but when I put the drive back in it does not automatically rebuild the raid. It shows up in the disk menu, but it will say degraded in the raid menu and will not reconstruct. When I have had a spare drive selected and done this test the raid reconstruction has worked.

Pros: Decent form factor.

Hot swappable (at least advertised, I haven't tried this).

Supports RAID 5.

Cons: Keys shipped with the device to lock drives in place don't fit.

Itunes music server is hit or miss; sometimes it shows up in itunes, sometimes not, tried rebooting the drive and client, etc... the drive seems to advertise the service randomly (I'm sure there is some logic, but it isn't obvious to me).

I wouldn't use this in a business, only in a home. The device appears incapable of doing two tasks at once. Writing a large file while watching (reading) a DVD backup from it stutters (this over wired gigabit ethernet).

Device appears limited by it's processor as there is really no reason the performance should be so slow.
