1 out of 5 eggsTotal failure

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 16TB (4 x 4TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0160KBK-NESN

Pros: relatively fast

Cons: I have two of these units. Drives failed in both and both failed to rebuild. All data was lost. These units are pointless. Who cares if WD sends you a brand new replacement on a product you cannot trust at all

3 out of 5 eggsHave had two of these and had to RMA both of them

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 16TB (4 x 4TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0160KBK-NESN

Pros: When they work, they are very reliable. A lot of storage space for a reasonable amount of money. Windows storage server - which can also be a minus.
Both of these have been in our work environment for the better part of two years. Both have been replaced under warranty - see cons below.

Cons: It takes FOREVER to do a factory restore on these. I have one that took over 96 hours to format the disks. Yes I know there is 16 TB of space here, but 96 + hours - seriously?
Both units have been replaced due to network card issues - and one of them due to the inability to even restore it. When we got the replacement, it could not read our old hard drives, so all of the data had to be restored.
Tech support is ok - however, be prepared for hold times and a struggle to get to level two even when you know you need to go there first. Also, as with so many things these days, make sure you have the serial number jotted down somewhere easy to find if these are stuck in a hard to access area.

Other Thoughts: I would cautiously recommend this product. It does perform well when it is working. The nics could have j

5 out of 5 eggsReliable, Fast, Relatively Good Value

This review is from: WD Sentinel DX4000 16TB (4 x 4TB) Small Business Storage Server NAS WDBLGT0160KBK-NESN

Pros: Solidly Built.
New units have iSCSI built in.
Dual PS option.
Dual NICs.
Easy Setup.

Cons: Spare drives insanely expensive.
Admin panel is slow.
Dual NICs causing some unique issues with Cisco ASA.

Other Thoughts: We've had two of the 8GB DX4000s in production for the past year or so. They have both been essentially trouble free. The units are easy to set up and manage. They are set with DHCP by default, but static IPs can easily be used.

I've read a few reviews that these are not real NAS boxes. That's absurd. Shares are easily created and NTFS permissions are easily set. They're easily accessible from PCs or Macs. I know they are designed with "workstation backup" in mind, but this is purely optional. They support DLNA, remote access, etc. but we don't use those features. Also, Microsoft Backup is limited to 2TB drives, so you can't expect to use a drive/partition larger than 2TB on an external drive connected to the DX.

We use these for three reasons:
1. Backup target for Symantec Backup Exec.
2.Separate large file storage from our regular SAN
3. Archive Exchange e-mail boxes (exported to .PST files) after employees depart.

I only have two complaints. As I mentioned in the Cons: section, spare drives are proprietary and very expensive. On the scheme of things, it's probably worth the $420 to have one 4TB drive in stock "just in case" ... but I've seen no errors, hiccups, etc. on either box so far.

The other negative is probably unique to us. Our firewall is a Cisco ASA5512x. For some reason, have both NICs enabled causes broadcast storms on our network. I've got storm control set on our switches (2960G), but that does not seem to mitigate the problem. When I disconnect the second NIC on the DX4000s, the problem goes away. I don't think this is 100% the fault of the DX's, but I'm not sure. You cannot override any teaming settings on the boxes. The NICs are automatically set in failover mode. I'll need to keep investigating.

Overall, I'd recommend these for a small business or an enterprise that needs a departmental backup or archive solution.
