2 out of 5 eggsExpensive failure

Pros: Fired right up, software was easy to load. Up and working in a short period. Great capacity. Newegg's customary excellence in tracking and timely delivery.

Cons: Failed after sixteen months. Failure began without warning. I managed to get some data backed up, but lost big time. i don't expect consumer products to last forever. Given the price and short life span, I am disappointed.
The S.M.A.R.T. disk utility tells me 'drive failure is imminent', and the
statistics tell me that 1375 bad sectors have been found and remapped (an
acceptable value is 5). Also, there are 658 more bad sectors pending reassignment. Here, it tells me that 0 is the normal value, and worst-case is 74. That amounts to serious product failure.

Other Thoughts: Notice that LG is not offering NAS storage in the same configuration any more. This and similar models are no longer available. That says a lot.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat network storage for cheap

Pros: This was actually a gift for my dad. The fact that we set it up at xmas and he hasn't called with a question about it tells me it must be working just fine so far. It's got cloud storage capability and it's pretty versatile being a Linux based system. It was crazy cheap for all the things it does.

Cons: The instructions were clear and setup should have been simple, but we kept getting crashes and error for some reason. I let my brother in law who's a Linux and networking guru give it a try and he seemed to get it going fine without problems. It probably would have showed up as a network drive without all that setup, but we wanted to go ahead and get the cloud and all the other fancy stuff working.

Other Thoughts: I use Windows Home Server myself for network storage and love it, but this little NAS box seems to work almost just as well for less than half the cost.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Nice

Pros: Great NAS for the price!

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I puchased this to act as a print sever, wireless storage for the house, and as an FTP server. I can say with confidence that this was a great purchase considering the number of options and the ease of use with the interface.

4 out of 5 eggsslick little box. really.

Pros: Does what it claims, plus some.

Cons: The web interface is pretty slow. Actually very slow. The specs on this thing make me think it shouldn't be, though. Poorly configured LAMP setup?

Other Thoughts: This really isn't a "NAS box". It's a little bitty linux machine with a web interface and a fairly big hard drive. This machine does lots of stuff, most of which I haven't played with yet. If you're looking for a specific capability, you can almost assume it's there. Samba. Time Machine. Remote mirroring (on MacOS). AFP, NFS. Samba. FTP.... lots more.

So far I've transferred 600GB of data, and it did that without a hitch, after a bunch of hours waiting. (The slowness was probably due more to me copying things file-by-file.) Then I plugged my printer into its USB port, it beeps, and so now I have a network printer, after a few minutes looking for a suitable driver on the Windows side of things.

All in all a pleasant out-of-box experience, and probably one of the more useful purchases I've made recently.

4 out of 5 eggsUSB works for me

Pros: I have the older 1G version of this unit. I beleive it to be identical otherwise. Contrary to a previous review, my USB allows me to fully see a 1T attached USB drive. Also, it allowed me to attach a USB hub and I can see multiple USB devices: hard drive, printer, and flash.

Cons: Doesn't restart itself after a power failure.
Documentation is very poor - there is not much of it and so doesn't fully describe all its features.

Other Thoughts: I'm not a unix person. I'd expect if I was I could get this to do exactly what I want.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for price

Pros: Super low price/storage ratio
Nice services such as iTunes server, DLNA and cloud access.
Setup was verry easy for me but as a professionnal network admin I might already have required knowledge

Cons: When I browse DLNA content from other devices (xbox360) I can't browse by folders. I just get the hole bunch of movies in a hudge single list of files. Might be an Xbox issue but just wanna mention it. Other than that, I've been using it for a month now and it's been working fine for my basic needs: storing music, pictures, movies to access them all around the house with many different devices.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat so far...

Pros: This little NAS packs a nice amount of storage into a small little package. Pretty much plug & play. Setting up user accounts and adding directories is simple enough. Nice design and contains a huge amount of features such as: internal web server, ftp server, mysql, server, support for NFS, SAMBA, and AFP, among many others. Also included are settings for DLNA, iTunes, uTorrent, Network Printers, and Familycast settings.

Cons: As with most LG products I have purchased documentation is sparse, a 14 page quick installation guide is included. Account security is lacking. System does not allow for special characters in passwords and usernames require a minimum of 5 characters. The English translation is slightly off in the web interface for example when setting options the radial buttons have: Use / Not Use or Setting / Not Setting instead of Enable / Disable... Mostly minor issues that I have noticed so far... When connecting a HDD device to the USB port the system only allows for 400gb drives, odd since most drives these days far surpass that mark.

Other Thoughts: I have not used this product for a great deal of time yet but I am impressed thus far. $140 USD for this piece of equipment is a great deal so far and certainly fits my needs!

So overall a good buy and would love another one on the shelf for when this one fills up!

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 30 hrs

Pros: Relatively cheap.

Cons: After uploading 450 gigs of files into it, it lost all network connectivity and beeped a lot. Tried re-installation but the install software was unable to see it on the network any longer. LED's around the jack still flash, so it's seeing the router but the router does NOT see it.

I'm not real happy about sending it back with 450 gigs of my files on it. The USB access to the drive does not have access to anything uploaded on the network. In fact, the USB access is a joke and can only write to 400 Gb on a 2 Tb drive. Anything written on the USB port is invisible to the net port.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this one. There are others in the same price range with better reputations.

4 out of 5 eggsData recovered

Pros: Very cheap. Worked which is always what you want. Aluminum enclosure can perhaps dissipate heat.

Cons: Seems a bit cheap construction (what do you expect). A little concerned that a hard fall might easily break the board, but I don't plan on dropping it! Transfer speeds seem slow~20mb/s for pics. I expect better speeds with more continuous reads. It's an old SATA I hard drive so pretty slow to begin with.

Other Thoughts: My laptop hard rive crashed and couldn't even recognize in BIOS. Took it to repair shop and they were clueless I hooked it up to a desktop and it was recognized. So I knew it was recoverable. Bought this enclosure to hook put to my laptop so I could pull data on to new hard drive worked like a charm.
Now I can use old hard drive as a back up device and storage.
