4 out of 5 eggsDecent Little NAS Box

Pros: Simple user interface, lots of features for the price. Free software upgrades and tech support. Nicely built.

Cons: I've had a mirrored set degrade and was unable to get it remirrored without recreating the set. This required finding another place to put 700G of data and a day to copy it around. Contrary to other reviewer's experience, I was able to read the drives using a LINUX box. There is a proprietary partition on the drive and then a large unix standard partition.

Other Thoughts: I'm a fan of Zyxel in general. This product has been OK but I'm considering a more powerful device like the QNAP.

3 out of 5 eggsGood but not fast enough

Pros: Nice clean web interface. Dont have to install anything to use it. Access using run \\nsa220, or shows up in network like any share. Ultra quiet unlike readynas. Torrent program works good. You must update firmware to get all the benefits of this NAS. Don't bother going directly to ZyXel to get firmware 3.12 because you will not get it installed. Read other thoughts.

Cons: Way to slow. New firmware allowes up to 3TB but takes you 2 days to load it up with 1080p movies. USB is just as slow. You cannot pull the drive out and plug it into a PC via SATA to upload files or backup files. Unknown file system as other reviewer said, not NTFS or FAT32. You just have to WAIT to load files.. Right now my network monitor is reporting 10% usage of a Gigabit transfer. Although my Procurve is reporting this NAS is working at Gigabit speeds, 10% of Gigabit = 100Mb.. Hmmm.

Other Thoughts: You need to update firmware one version at a time. Ver. 2.20 to ver. 2.30 then to ver. 3.12.. Now you can use web based firmware uploader to get to 2.30, but it will not work to get to 3.12. You will need to put 3.12 firmware files into a thumb drive then reboot the system. You will need to go to to obtain older firmware versions..

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate to previous review

Pros: Same as before.
Small Footprint
Easy to use
Reliable thus far
+ New firmware allows 3TB volume size

Cons: Same as before.
Slow data transfer rates even w/ gigabyte network.
3TB max volume size gets smaller every day.

Other Thoughts: I am writing this as an update to my previous review to note that despite what ZyXEL said earlier they have released a new firmware for the unit that adds most of the functionality of the NSA-220 Plus, including ext3 and larger volume size support now I can use my two 1.5 TB drives in a raid 0 array.

Just wish it supported being hooked up as a usb2 device for transfer rates or faster transfer rates over gigabyte ethernet.

4 out of 5 eggsNo issues

Pros: It works with 1.5TB seagate drives. FTP and CIFS.

Cons: Interface is a little slow, it could be a little bit better organized. FTP is not secure.

Other Thoughts: It gets the job done.

2 out of 5 eggsBe Aware..

Pros: I relied on this for it's raid backup, with two "green power" WD 750 hard drives in parallel.
Also took advantage of the print server feature.
Oh, and it's quite good-looking..

Cons: Print server would often require me to connect to the drive and enter my username/password before the printer would respond (that was "normal," and I got used to it.)
However, about a year later, it started to drop off the network for periods of time. After tech support / troubleshooting, Zyxel issued an RMA number (after a bit of runaround with "the wrong department issuing the number.) I paid to ship it to them, and three months later, I'm waiting... they ignore my emails... and I even have a postal receipt confirming they received it :(

Other Thoughts: It uses a somewhat uncommon file system created by a now-defunct company, called Reiser4 (it's not NTFS or EXT2/EXT3), which makes recovering your data a bit harder if you're not in the know (windows users, try Virtual Volumes.)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Low price for a lot of storage.
Small footprint.
Relatively lightweight.

Cons: 2TB Max capacity.

Other Thoughts: I bought two 1.5TB hard drives thinking they might work in Raid0. Granted it doesn't say anywhere that it will but it was worth a shot. No, the volume size was reported incorrectly. Same problem when trying JBOD. It works in Raid1 which is cool but I have half as much storage as I thought I might get. I am mostly posting this review to state this because I couldn't find this information anywhere before I bought the product.

I e-mailed ZyXEL and asked them if there would be a firmware update and they said no, capacity in excess of 2TB per volume would be reserved for the NSA220 plus. So this is a great product but if you are thinking you can get it to work with more than 2TB of total storage volume you will be wrong. Unless you spend the time and have the knowhow to actually modify the open source firmware, if so, more power to you.

So if you want max capacity get Two 1TB drives and use Raid 0.

5 out of 5 eggsGood little NAS

Pros: - Small form factor
- Able to support in 2 x 1.5TB drive to make RAID 1 partition.
- FTP file speed over 100Mbit network was like 5-8 MByte/sec.
- used about 27 watt when active and 8 watt when idle.

Cons: None so far.

3 out of 5 eggsAn average computer peripheral

Pros: Really quiet, simple setup, nice small form factor, and good build quality. Sort-of fast. Built-in bittorrent and FTP.

Cons: Sort-of slow; on my gigabit network in RAID0 it can perform at over 100Mb/sec, but that's 1/4th of what I can do with Vista and/or Linux. Fast enough to stream, but annoyingly slow for loading large files.
Trying to update my firmware from v2.20 to version 2.30 turned my first box in to a brick. Zyxel sent me a new one.

Other Thoughts: I'm 50/50 on the quality of Zyxel support. On one hand, their people are thorough and ask good questions to get to the root of the problem. On the other hand it took a really long time to get my RMA replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat price and loaded with features

Pros: Do a search for the $50.00 rebate on this item that is good thru 9/30/2008 to make this an even better buy. Installation was very easy and everything need was included in the box to include hard drive screws. I installed two 1TB drives and within five minutes I was up and running. I used the Raid 0 because I am tired of losing files. The thumb screws on the back were good, but you still need a screwdriver to remove the hard drive tray, no big deal. The front panel USB ports and one touch backup of USB drives is really convenient. It looks good and runs quiet. It does everything I need at an affordable price. The included Memeo Autobackup software works and is easy to configure and saves you $30.00. A lot better than the D-Link DNS-323.

Cons: None so far.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as planned

Pros: Quite and moderatly quck. Easy setup and the FTP server works great

Cons: Extra cardboard packaging

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd NAS that I have bought over the past year for different customers and by far the best overall.
