It's a gaming keyboard alright, buut...
- Pros: *Programmable keys - Real macros, not just one other measly button like my Logitech G5 mouse (which is great though)
*Medium key travel - I love the feel of laptop keyboards, but sometimes you want to //feel// like you're using a desktop. This has the perfect key travel distance that feels just right to type on *Possibly, the audio and USB ports - I use a 5.1 speaker system, so the headphone jack is meaningless, and the USB is 1.1...a bit outdated now? Probably someone else would find it useful. *Razer support - does a great job. Razer deserves respect. *Response time - 'nuf said. It really makes a difference *Anti-Ghosting - It really works. No matter what your preference of keys are, (wasd?esdf?) you can crouch, move diagonally, reload and hold your teamchat button all at the same time, and they will ALL work. That alone would make this keyboard a notch above your daddy's gaming keyboard.
- Cons: *No key-backlight - except for the macro keys. That's just disrespectful. This is the flagship of the Razer boards. And while every Tom, Dick and Harry's keyboards, mice and underwear have LED backlighting, this board just has a Razer logo that's just distracting. Razer has a sweet logo, but I would have been much happier with key backlighting than the pulsing snakes.
It's quirky at best with Vista64 - This was where both the eggs got docked... *Outside of games (good lord, or this board would have been 70$ too expensive for it's functionality) the lightning response time is rendered completely pointless with horrible buffer speed. I can actually type 3 words before they appear onscreen on websites. And sometimes not appear. No good. Probably a driver thing. *Mapping profile switching to a macro key is buggy. I put "Profile 2" on R1, in profile 1, and the reverse too. I tried using it in-game, I got BSOD'd. Every time. No good. *Firmware update - Does not happen in Vista64. No good
- Other Thoughts: I think more of my cons are for Vista64 than the Razer Tarantula. But besides what I mentioned...
*The battledock thing is useless. Expensive and pointless things to cover up an ugly hole on the top of my keyboard. I just put my 5.1 center speaker over it. *Razer support tried to help me firmware update in Vista64, then told me to just give up and update on a 32-bit machine. I still haven't been able to get it that to work, even after trying everything they've mentioned so far. I like the keyboard, but it's issues have had me seriously consider replacing either the board, or my operating system T.T
Excellent keyboard, albeit gimmicky
- Pros: Sleek looks; fast response time; extra programmable buttons very useful; removable keys, allowing cleaning; low profile;
- Cons: Only programmable keys are backlit; light-up Razer logo is garish, especially in darkness; BattleLight dock is a silly gimmick;
- Other Thoughts: Overall quality is very good. I've never perceived the board as being flimpsy or shoddily-made. The wrist support is very comfortable and built right into the frame, not hanging on a hinge the way I've seen other keyboards. The Sleep, Homepage, Music, and Volume Control buttons are all very useful and save me computer time so I'm not swimming around the UI looking for all these tools. Just tap a button, *BOOM* Firefox. Tap, *BANG* iTunes, etc.
I have to dock an egg against Razer for trying to milk me in exchange for additional illumination. The add-on BattleLight is a useless gimmick; why not simply backlight all the keys? I see other Razer keyboards have backlit keys, but lack the programmable buttons this Taratula has.
Add backlit keys, get rid of the Battlelight dock, and Razer would have the perfect board for me, and maybe for someone else.
poor build quality
- Pros: initial- nice feel & action, good looks.
- Cons: software is cumbersome. the built in mem on the board is useless as u have to install sofware/drivers on any comp u hook it up to. so the whole concept of programming it, loading the settings & taking it & your fave mouse over to your buds for some lan fun is moot. just dont understand y they added the expense of onboard mem.
unless u r 'touch typist'(im not) impossible to see what u r doing in poor/non light. battle light is an absolute waste of $$. 2 months out of warranty the board crapped out on me. got so i couldnt even boot into any comp if it was conected. have never, ever had a kb fail me, let alone one this expensive - i am using the log g15 it replaced, i took it from wifes comp & she is using the saitek eclipse the g15 replaced. my other keyboards are either in the garbage, on other peeps comps, or the standard ps2 backup in the spare parts. fwiw, i am not even that intensive of a kb user, most of my gaming needs are filled by my fang pad & mouse. & the rest is minimal
- Other Thoughts: this isnt the only razer product i have had problems with. think they have real qc issues.
