1 out of 5 eggsAvoid this product

Pros: Excellent resolution, high contrast ratio, versatile stand adjustments, no dead or stuck pixels

Cons: Poor firmware causes numerous, nagging problems such as the inability to turn power on after a short time off (must wait 15-30 minutes before monitor will "come back to life"), also silly error messages that don't go away, etc.
I finally returned it to Acer at my shipping cost according to the provisions of the warranty. But, when the monitor was returned (within a few weeks), the paperwork said it had been "fully tested" and completely repaired. It was packed poorly and had huge streaks across the entire screen (3/4" wide) of stuck pixels where they had rubbed something across it. Worse yet, they had reflashed the firmare to specs for a 20" monitor instead of the correct 24" model!! Unbelieveable! And to top it off - the problem still persisted. Finally convinced them to pay the shipping on the return. Took aver a month to get the replacement sent this time, but so far the refurbed one works fine.

Other Thoughts: I was able to unstick the pixels myself using a free software tool, but could not set the resolution properly because of the incorrect firmware. Finally, they held my credit card number hostage (pending the return) for the full retail price of a new monitor ($1200) even though they sent me a re-furb!!! I will never buy from this company again.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat monitor when it works

Pros: Brilliant image & crisp text when it works. The best monitor I have owned when it sometimes works.

Cons: This monitor doesn't work. I want my money back. Read below.

Other Thoughts: Several months after the purchase, I started getting a blinking "no signal" sign in the middle of screen and the monitor goes blank intermittingly. This happens throughout the day every few minutes. I sent the monitor to Acer's Texas service center under the 3 yr warranty (costs $25 by Fedex from Tucson). In 10 days got the monitor back fixed, then 4 weeks later, again the same problem. I again sent it back to Acer (another $25 by Fedex), got it back in 14 days fixed. That was yesterday. Now hoping the problem won't come back, but I think it will according to other peoples reviews with the same problem. I really wanted to like this monitor. Everytime I send the monitor to the service center, it costs me $25 Fedex & some downtime & frustration. Definitely not worth $650-700 if a monitor has this much of prolems. Obviously this must be a design flaw by Acer since many people experience the identical issue. I want my money back either from Newegg or from Acer, I don't care.

2 out of 5 eggsSystematic design problem

Pros: I had this monitor for 10 months now. Really nice image quality, excellent resolution, also good for gaming (requires a serious video card though...).

Cons: Problem is, I started to get a "No Signal" message in a gray window, as if there was no video card plugged in. Funny thing is that behind that window, everything runs normal. Every minute or so it would reset itself and the window goes away for another 30 seconds or so, after which it reappears. Acer not very helpful with replacements, so be prepared to wait.

Other Thoughts: Move OSD position to upper right corner if you need to use the monitor while you get another one. Or even better, buy a different monitor.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Signal

Pros: It's very bight when it works.

Cons: After two day this monitor stopped working. No Signal message appeared and you cannot get rid of it, no matter what you do to reduce resolution, brightness, EST.

Other Thoughts: I don’ know how ACER could put such an immature product into production. It should be taken out of market in my humble opinion.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great picture. Can view 1080p. Computer games are no match for this monitor. Great contrast and zero lag.

Cons: PS3 will not work with this monitor due to HDCP. Do not buy a hdmi to dvi cable because it will not override the PS3 HDCP. Buttons at on the bottom of the screen are a bit of a annoyance but no reason to not buy the monitor if you are going to use it for a computer system.

Other Thoughts: Don't let the long con section dissuade you from buying this monitor. It works perfectly for computer gaming. The picture is incredible. Best monitor I have ever owned.

4 out of 5 eggsVista Certified?

Pros: Big, bright, cool running, no signal issues, no input lag.

Cons: Not HDCP. Thought Vista Certified meant HDCP enabled.

Other Thoughts: Thank you for contacting Acer America. The AL2423W is not HDCP compliant
and Acer does not offer a firmware update to make it compliant. I'm sorry I
am unable to assist with this issue.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful

Pros: Ater doing quite a bit of research for about a week I decided to purchase this monitor. This monitor is awesome to look at even when the screen is off. The pictures make this screen look tiny. All my games look outstanding. The color and brightness are just right. Plenty of desktop space and perfect for anyone using Maya or Photoshop. I use Maya myself and and ecstatic about how much room there is after upgrading from a 19" monitor. One word describes it all...Beautiful!

Cons: This monitor is a monster, huge, so I guess if you are working on a small desk or room it could be a bad thing. 1920x1200 put a lot of stain on your video card if your running the latest games, so be prepared to upgrade your graphics card if your running an older card. To put it in perspective I have a Radeon 1600. Games (such as WoW, CS:Source, and Battlefield 2142) ran fine at 1280x1024 with most settings maxed and I have to turn most settings way down at 1920x1200. So most of this monitors strong points are its weak points also.

Other Thoughts: After searching arounf on newegg and local stores I found this to be the best deal. Some reviews were talking about how they have gotten the "no signal" error. I have yet to get it and (*knock on wood*) I hope to avoid the problem.

1 out of 5 eggsDont buy it

Pros: Very bright and crisp

Cons: Failed within three days with poor video signal lock. Acer said they would pay shipping, then refused. It had been repaired and is back but now has the dreaded "no signal" appearing and teh system dies. Acer support are useless I have been waiting for up to 2 hours at times and they are really not helpful. Google ACER AL2423W ISSUe and you will see how widespread the issue is!

Other Thoughts: If Acer wants to stay in business they shoudl recall and repalce the faulty units.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent monitor

Pros: This is the first LCD I have owned. Before I always used large, expensive CRT's costing around $1000. Despite my high standards, this LCD is brilliant and far exceeded all my expectations. It also works well for gaming and I like how it by default automatically stretches legacy games to the edges so there are no black borders--old games look amazing filling up the whole wide screen no matter what res they are run. For picture quality, you have to see this monitor to appreciate it. As far as I am concerned, everyone should get a wide screen, 24” LCD with 1920x1200 res such as this one if you can. It's perfect.

Cons: Speaker quality is a sadly lacking component on such a nice monitor. They made me reflect how nice it would be to have great speakers built in so I could eliminate the satellites and wires from my desktop as well as the speaker power brick.

Other Thoughts: Important: the feared "no signal" mentioned so frequently here started cropping up for me several days after purchase, but it was not due to the monitor (repeat, NOT the monitor). I determined the problem was the power supply. I resolved the issue by switching the graphics card power connector driving my 8800GTS video card to the other PSU connector (my Ultra X2 550 watt PSU has SLI but I don't use it). I speculate one of the 12V rails was overloaded causing the graphics card to fail and switching balanced the load. This cleared the "no signal" instantly and permanently.

So if you experience no signal, do not assume it is the monitor. You may have a problem getting enough juice from your power supply to drive the high res on your video card. If plugging a suspect monitor into another system works, try to rebalance the power connectors on your PSU. If that does not resolve it, upgrade to a bigger/higher quality PSU.
