Put Full HD 1080p on your desktop with the VX2233wm from ViewSonic. This 21.5" screen supports the full 1920x1080 resolution so watching movies on your desk has never looked better. The resolution would mean nothing without being able to handle the input signal. That's why ViewSonic put an HDCP compliant DVI-D port on it as well as the standard D-Sub connector.

A dynamic contrast ratio of 18,000:1 and a 300cd/m² brightness rating deliver spectacular image quality. The picture will be stutter free thanks to the 5ms response time. The panel has an anti-glare surface to keep the picture bright and even in all lighting conditions.

You don't have to worry about the environment with this monitor. It is Energy Star compliant and when in Eco mode is uses 40% less power than normal. The VX2233wm also meets RoHS and EPEAT Silver certifications for hazardous materials and environmental concerns.

1 out of 5 eggshorrible

Pros: Competitive monitor to other brands. Price/features/etc.

Cons: HORRIBLE quality. I have had 5-6 of these fail at about the year mark. They keep sending repaired monitors back with the same problem: high pitched whine, a band of lightness in the middle of the monitor.

Other Thoughts: Have used viewsonic exclusively in my business (retail pc sales) for a decade. No problems till about 2 years ago. Since then, I've got nothing but failed monitors. repairs don't last/etc. I jumped ship, and am having excellent luck with LG, samsung, and Asus.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Monitor!

Pros: Beautiful looking monitor! Awesome color and resolution. I use this for playing games, and I must say, Bad Company 2 looks INSANE with 1080p. 5ms response time is very good for video games, and movies in 1080p look stunning.

Cons: Maybe speakers, but I haven't had the chance to use them

Other Thoughts: I haven't used the speakers on this, as I have speakers of my own.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Monitor

Pros: 1080p, 21.5''. Good pixel size.
Brighter than my other ViewSonic monitor, color appears slightly more vibrant.
No dead pixels, appears to be working fine.

Cons: LED on the front is blindingly bright, had to put some electrical tape over it.
On screen menu is a bit basic, but I can't think of anything else I would include in it.
A bit more expensive than my other monitor (same size/resolution) that I purchased almost 2 years ago.

Other Thoughts: Stand is shorter than my other ViewSonic monitor so I had to prop it up on some books to get the screens flush.
Dual monitor setups are amazing.
Wish they were 1920x1200 for the extra horizontal real estate.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad in an Eyefinity setup.

Pros: 22 inches
VESA mount
No dead or stuck pixels and I've bought 3!

Cons: The stands have enough give to make lining them up side-by-side difficult. One side seems to sink on each monitor a hair.

Other Thoughts: I purchased one of these over a year ago. Recently I purchased two more and I now have three sitting on my desk. :) One problem with these is that they age and I can clearly see the difference between the colors produced by the new monitors and the old monitor. Unfortunately, color calibration is a tricky thing and I haven't sat down long enough to get this right. Though, I didn't feel this was a con on Viewsonic's part as cold cathode ray tubes will age and discolor a little bit. It could also be different production runs, of course.

4 out of 5 eggsgood monitor

Pros: full 1920x1080 High resolution, low price, ease of setup and installation, nice slick/polished look

Cons: Biggest fault is high backlight bleed through on top and bottom edge. Effect is very noticable on games and movies with dark background - but is acceptable for the price.

Other Thoughts: my first widescreen - very nice improvement

2 out of 5 eggs"Out of Range"

Pros: Everything but the functioning LCD screen looks nice.

Cons: Connected (via VGA) to an older Dell Laptop (2006) only to receive a message stating that the monitor was "Out of Range." I followed the trouble shooting guide through various options and nothing would fix it. I sent an email to Viewsonic explaining the problem and asking for a solution, and have yet to hear from them; don't know if I will. Connected to a firend's newer computer (built this year) via DVI, and it worked fine.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure the picture is great, but I'm having no luck using it as a second monitor to my older laptop. But it is a great black screen to add some contrast to the wood desk.

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate after 8 months

Pros: Good price (especially at the time), 1920x1080 is good for movies, comes with DVI cable

Cons: No longer a great value when compared to other monitors of higher quality.
Massive backlight flickering after a few months of use. Customer service is a PITA to deal with. Lots of stuck pixels appeared a few months after purchase.

Other Thoughts: I'm revising my review on this monitor (that my fiance bought me for my birthday back in November) because it has just been replaced by the HP w2338h. Backlight flickering became difficult to stare at when working on all day, stuck pixels were immediately apparent, and getting the unit repaired seemed like more trouble than it was worth. So now it is being used as a TV replacement in my fiance's office. I'd look at other options in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for HDTV / Blue Ray

Pros: It's a Viewsonic. They have been a top name in monitors for years.

Cons: Currently you can get a 23 inch Acer for the same price as this 21.5 inch Viewsonic.

Other Thoughts: An earlier review claimed that "the aspect ratio is 16X10 rather than the theatrical 16:9 DVD." 1920 x 1080 pixels is 16:9 Also 16:9 is just one of several possible USA DVD aspect ratios (PAL video is another matter).

From "Image resolution" on Wikipedia:

720×480 ( 520 lines): DVD
720×480 ( 400 lines): Widescreen DVD (anamorphic)
1280×720 ( 720 lines): Blu-ray
1920×1080 (1080 lines): Blu-ray

From "Display resolution" on Wikipedia:

SDTV: 480i (NTSC, 720×480 split into two 240-line fields)
EDTV: 480p (NTSC, 720×480)
HDTV: 720p (1280×720)
HDTV: 1080i (1280/1440/1920×1080 split into two 540-line fields)
HDTV: 1080p (1920×1080 progressive scan)

Video can be stored on a DVD in 4:3 format (standard TV shape) or 16:9 (widescreen)

720x480 (NTSC, only with MPEG-2)
720x576 (PAL, only with MPEG-2)
704x480 (NTSC, only with MPEG-2)
704x576 (PAL, only with MPEG-2)
352x480 (NTSC, MPEG-2 & MPEG-1)
352x576 (PAL, MPEG-2 & MPEG-1)
352x240 (NTSC, MPEG-2 & MPEG-1
