3 out of 5 eggsWorst shipping experience ever.

Pros: It works, luckily (see cons). The picture is good and does everything I expect.

Cons: The condition this thing arrived in was horrible. There was no cushion at all. It was just thrown in a thin box without ANY protection. It looked like it fell off the back of a truck. This is the first time Newegg has disappointed me. I can forgive one time, but next time, someone is getting contacted to answer for it.

Other Thoughts: I would have given this more eggs but the shipping condition just ruined it. The product is good. I'm just upset that Newegg handled my property so poorly.

4 out of 5 eggsAn LCD TV without the tuner

Pros: VERY inexpensive - good value for the money.

Since this is basically a low-end LCD TV with the tuner removed, it has all the inputs a TV would have:
++HDMI for your DVD player
++Component (with its own audio inputs) for your cable box
++Composite / Svideo (with its own audio inputs) for your old-fashioned VCR
++Analog VGA input & mini audio-in jack for your computer too

Speakers are also more powerful (although not audiophile quality) than a standard monitor, so you can use it in the kitchen or a bedroom hooked up to a cable box and it can fill the room without sounding too tinny or strained.

No dead pixels

Cons: The remote control codes not the same as any brand I could find, so I could not use universal remote features of my cable box remote. I had to buy a learning remote and hand-program it to get a one-remote solution.

The composite and component inputs are quite pixelated at standard resolutions. I just turned down the sharpness and it looks fine though. Send it a high-res image though, and it looks pretty good, especially through the HDMI. So the resolution on old VCR tapes through the Composite input isn't all that great - what do you expect from old VCR tapes anyway?

Color/levels out of the box are pretty bad. They can be tuned to make them better, but the midrange abilities of this monitor are pretty weak. You either have to turn down the contrast and up the brightness to see anything in the shadows (but everything is washed out), or leave the brightness down and turn up the contrast, but accept that anything filmed indoors will be almost completely black.

Other Thoughts: This review covers both the ViewEra V221MV and V195MV (I bought one of each, they perform identically).

This is basically a super-cheap LCD TV that they took the tuner out of. The buttons on the side of the unit and on the remote still even have the channel up and down labels. Heck, if you have to use a cable box anyway (like we do here with Cablevision), why pay for a tuner?

These monitors fit the bill for something that I could replace a tube-type TV that I had hooked up to a cable-box, DVD player, and old-fashioned VCR that only had composite out. It was the ability to support all three, especially the composite in (plus the low price) that made these my choices for the kitchen and bedroom.

Summary - There are probably LCD monitors or TVs with better brightness/contrast management, but none that also allow you to also connect an old VCR, plus a DVD player and cable box at this price.

(4 stars for good value but so-so image quality & remote compatibility)
