Can you rotate this monitor for portrait viewing?

Yes, I have 2 in portrait orientation as periferals, and they work very well, windows has a very simple screen manager that allows for seem less operation on desktop, but be aware, most games do not support a portrait-landscape-portrait orientation

can you adjust the height of the monitor?

Yes, the height adjusts very easily and stays at the height selected. We are very pleased with this monitor. Contrary to what others have said the volume on the monitor is also adjustable and we find the volume more than adequate.

In the landscape (widescreen) position and adjusted as low as possible, how far is the bottom of the viewing area from the desk?

The monitor has a sliding track (very smooth and sturdy) that can be adjusted between 2" and 6.5" from the desk (measured to the bottom of the frame)

2) connect both to a MAC laptop?

Dual monitor set ups need a split cable.  Basically 1 cable that goes from your computer and splits into 2.  Monitor cables go from it into both monitors.  I would suggest DVI for the monitors.  Better quality.
