Best external Dial Up Modem I buy.
- Pros: You can connect threw rusted telephone lines soaking in water over long distance (in length not area codes) In combination with a Belkin Surge Protector with 80db noise filtering. It refuses to give up connecting.
They work Great with Linux even though they don't follow conventional rules of data communication. Don't count on them to work with dirt old distributions.
- Cons: It's max communication rate with the computer is 15000 bps. Set it higher and it will malfunction.
One of the many I've bought shorted out and fried but I don't know if it was a power surge or what.
They are spendy.
- Other Thoughts: All though Trendnet says their items are compatible with Linux they refuse to supply support. That's just stupid.
Great Little Modem
- Pros: Modem is width & length smaller than a standard mousepad. Comes with a 232 serial cable, quick installation guide, & power cord. Box has a small flip switch on the back to instantly turn power on/off. Has several lights to show activity & works well. Owned for a month now & never connected less than optimal speeds.
- Cons: Comes with a cumbersome 232 cable for Serial ports, but if a Serial port is unavailable one must purchase a USB to Serial adapter seperately (about ten dollars). This is also known as a USB-Serial Bridge. One end is to connect to a USB computer & the other plugs into the Serial port on the modem. This increases the cost of the product, but the SABRENT SBT-USC1K adapter I purchased has made this well worth the investment.
- Other Thoughts: While the USB-Serial bridge will work when connected & computer is turned on, if the power switch on the modem is not turned on at boot Windows XP will not enable the modem. One must make sure the switch is turned on before booting, else XP states the modem is busy, etc.
Consistantly connects at the highest speed possible in my area on these old phone lines. I have used two other modems & a Toshiba laptop modem which only hit the higher speeds once in a blue moon. I have never connected below optimal speed for my conditions with this modem. Impressive!
Easy Install & Faster Speeds
- Pros: This serial modem is GREAT!! I had installed it in a pc I built for my daycare provider. The speeds are definitely fast than the internal 56k Dell modem they had. I had done alot of research before getting this because they needed one that would work with Vista & dial-up. They are to far in the country to get DSL and dont have cable. This was the PERFECT MATCH for what they were looking for using USFamily.net
- Cons: Only con we have is the NOISE it is VERY LOUD when dialing and getting communication setup after that it's quiet.
