5 out of 5 eggsUSB Modem Rosewill RNX-56USB

Pros: Good price and good quality. I was looking for something to have in the event I needed a portable modem. So far every computer I have tried this unit in seems to work with no issues.

Cons: None at this time.

5 out of 5 eggs*It works (on Linux)!*

Pros: Worked as advertised, straight out of the package. Mine lives an "active" life where my laptop and components are broken down, moved, and then set back up usually at least twice a day.

Mine's been through Knoppix, Debian, and Ubuntu (all Linux derivatives), and has worked perfectly on all. The only software tweak I've needed to do is install wvdial with some of those. It may just be a cognitive thing that nothing else has worked for me with respect to that part of it.

Cons: The wire cover unexpectedly split pretty early on right near the USB connector. Maybe a half inch'ish long split that really didn't have a traceable cause when it happened. That was AT LEAST a year and a half ago, and it's still going when I expected to have to replace it soon after the split appeared.

Mine apparently also "only" lasted just over two years. It does live an active lifestyle not to mention that it runs MANY HOURS EVERY DAY so it's forgiven. I find it not much short of phenomenal that it has run all this time in spite of that breakage in the wire covering so early on.

Other Thoughts: I've already mentioned it works on Knoppix, Debian, and Ubuntu. I'm currently using Debian Sid (unstable) and still have no problems. I debootstrap the absolute smallest Debian possible because I'm on... DIALUP, and again and still... it works! Only thing I have to do after each new debootstrap'ed install is download wvdial, run wvdialconf, tweak the baud rate to 152000, and the modem's ready to go.

4 out of 5 eggsI know this will happen

Pros: plug and play, USB

Cons: easy to lose

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these 3 years ago. Used them about 3 times between then and now to send faxes. Need to send a fax today and I can not find the things. I KNOW I will find at least one as soon as I order a replacement.

3 out of 5 eggsSolid Working USB Modem

Pros: Modem is very easy to install, just plug it in, and set up your fax/internet connection.

Cons: I've gone through two of these, they seem to last about 2 years before becoming unresponsive. Not sure if that's a long time, or a short time, I feel like most USB regular use devices ( modems, WLAN cards ) will have about that type of life.

Other Thoughts: Will order a third one.

5 out of 5 eggsWorked with linux

Pros: I've used this with Windows (xp mostly) for years, but was pleasantly surprised when it worked very easily with Raspberry Pi Linux (Raspbian). Installed ppp and wvdial and it Just Worked!

Cons: None - I've heard some firmware revisions didn't do linux well, but both of mine seem fine.

Other Thoughts: Please keep making them forever.. we will be stuck with dialup for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 eggsgood Fax product;

Pros: installed new Win 7 64 bit and needed to upgrade my modem situation; this external product is easy to use and install and can can be used on other PC's too. People still FAX so this is good for that;

Cons: not sure yet - will do follow up if find any;

Other Thoughts: had a Rosewill wireless Router that worked very well too; not that complicated and fast too;

4 out of 5 eggsAffordable Fax Modem

Pros: Just plug it in to a Win 8.1 machine and it works

Cons: Unable to monitor fax dial out tones while sending a fax.

Other Thoughts: I would give it 4 eggs if the dial out tone worked with Win 8.1.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Seems to work

Cons: No speaker so it's hard to tell how the call is being answered.

Other Thoughts: I don't have much to compare it too but it seems slow. The vista 64 drivers worked on my win 7 machine. My win 7 32 bit machine picked up the driver automatically.

5 out of 5 eggsworks with win7 great, no driers listed for osx

Pros: works well with my win 7 desktop and canon ide scanner.
for the person with the mac osx driver question the rosewill website does not show mac compatibility for this unit.
Itunes has a software solution
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/faxdocument/id423420465
but I am unsure how this works if you need to use a regular phone line

Cons: no cons, i have found this works perfectly with the win7 document fax accessory program

4 out of 5 eggsWorks so far...

Pros: Working on win7 32-bit. Got it for $20 and free shipping which is twice what some cost but this seems more reliable.

Cons: Required lugging my parent's PC to my house so I could get the latest updates to then install this modem. If you already have internet then this will be easy to setup, if not you *may* have some work to do - especially if the computer hasn't been updated in years...

Other Thoughts: At first I received no dial tone - but I had forgotten to remove or disable the old (unreliable/broken) modem card! Be sure this doesn't happen to you as you might think the product is defective when it isn't. I nearly RMA'd it...
