Love Liteon
- Pros: Well balanced, awesome price, good rip speeds both for DVD Video and CD-Audio.
Have seen Audio rips at up to 51x. Using SATA drives also seems to result in more reliable operation for Windows. If you rip a badly scratched CD in Windows with a PATA drive, Windows will eventually revert the mode to PIO, not UDMA (and it's a pain to re-enable). PIO mode is bad news for anything - grinds your machine to a halt basically with low speeds also.
- Cons: Takes a while when extracting audio to get up to speed. Initial track is usually at 6.5x, then the CAE (Constant Angular Velocity) kicks in and speeds the rotation up and you're off.
works fine
- Pros: use this to load OS's on My seti@home slave boxes, great price for a product that works neweggxactly as it should.
- Cons: you need a SATA power connector or molex to SATA power adapter.
- Other Thoughts: if you need just basic DVD-rom functionality like I do,look no further
Simple setup.
- Pros: The Main board on my latest build had one IDE port and went into a 4u server case. I couldnt use a 2 gadget IDE cable (Master/Slave) cuz it wasnt long enough to get from the hard drive to the DVD player.
So, after reading the pros and cons, I took a chance on this SATA drive and I can honestly say, it was the easiest piece of hardware I ever installed.
I connected the cables to the player and plugged into the nearest SATA port and that's all the setting up I had to do.
I was prepared to enter the BIOS and do whatever I had to do to get the thingie configured, but after a reboot...it worked great! It was recognized in *My Computer* and XP Pro had no problems at all.
So, just for the heck of it, I hooked up a few of my Linux distros (Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 and OpenSuse 11.0) and they went along with it, too!! There were no glitches at all. Amazing!
- Cons: No cons.
- Other Thoughts: It seems to be a solid, well built device. The tray opens and closes with real authority. It doesnt slam shut with a BAM, like some of the other players I've used.
I needed to get the build done and gone, so I ordered two, in case one might be DOA. But no, everything went smooth and I'm happy! :)
Also, It came in two days and was nicely packaged by those Newegg shipping and receiving people.
Good job, as usual Newegg. Thank you!
