does the job
- Pros: Used this in my first computer/HTPC build ever. It plays and read Blu-Ray disks fine and burns DVD's at advertised speeds.
- Cons: I'm not terribly excited with the bundled Powerdvd software. It keeps telling me to register it even though i have at least 5 times now and it only includes playback features, no burning software. Luckily I use 7MC with the proper codecs and don't have to deal with Powerdvd

iHES 108-29 Stutters and Stammers
- Pros: Price certainly was attractive. Touted specs looks makes it looks like a solid performer. Black bezel goes well with the black case in which it now resides. Easy to install, SATA connections make it a no-brainer to hook up, since it is keyed to the cable. Install the software that is bundled with it (see below) and you are watching Bluray, baby. At least in theory...
- Cons: I am disappointed with what, to me, seems to be a slow access time (though I have not ran any tests). That gripe notwithstanding, I have two real issues with this drive, and one with Newegg.
1) The drive stammers and stutters at the movie menu when a Bluray disk is inserted and the Cyberlink Bluray disk suite: PowerDVD8 (bundled software with drive) begins the movie. This continues even in playback.
2) LITE-ON offers 0, zip, nadda, and none on the support front for this drive. Their web site does not offer any information about this drive, not even sales copy! Are they trying to tell the customers to stay away from it?
3) I received this drive bundled in bubble wrap from Newegg, sans software and SATA cable, pictured with the product. Fortunately I also ordered a DVD burner with the drive (which also came bubble wrapped), and it had the Bluray player's software and cable bundled with it (?!). Bubblewrap is no big deal, but what if I had not ordered the DVD burner?
- Other Thoughts: Because I cannot determine if the stuttering audio and slow playback issue is a hardware fault or a driver issue, coupled with the fact I cannot get any answer from LITE-ON or Newegg, I am going to have to recommend folks to stay away from this drive.
Further, I noticed at least one other customer had a problem in that they did not receive the included software. KUDOS to Newegg for supplying that lack, but is there a problem with the bundling and bubble wrapping procedures?
I would like some copy/instructions with the drive that tell where to get some support for the hardware. I know OEM DVD/Bluray drives are pretty much ubiquitous, but some type of paper in my hand with information would reduce a lot of my misgivings, particularly when the manufacturer appears to have abandoned the product. Please tell me if I am wrong, as I really do want to like this drive (the price, if the drive works) is great!
8x BD-ROM Combo
- Pros: This combo drive does what the specs show. Recognizes a BD-ROM fairly quickly and plays just fine. Also plays and records CD's and DVD's. With the right software this drive is also an good scanner to test the burn quality of your completed burns.
- Cons: Out of the box reads single layer BD-ROM at 8x but only reads a double layer disc at around 4x. No info on this drive on the LiteOn web site. Received a bare drive only.
- Other Thoughts: I've been using LiteOn optical drives for years and always had good luck. With the right software this drive will perform better at reading BD's for the price than anything out there at the moment. I read everything I could find regarding this model (a real challenge) and am happy I made the purchase.
