5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Works well with a simple USB 2.0

Cons: Noisy
Slow

Other Thoughts: This thing is pretty sweet. Yeah it's a little noisy and it's not exactly lightning fast. But lets be honest, it's operating a on USB 2.0.. For $15 as well.. This thing is great. Perfect for small builds with no room for a CD-Drive (that's what I ran into). Also a neat little socket on the bottom for the USB cable so you can easily stash it away with the cable until you needed it later if you didn't want to leave it laying around.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of junk

Pros: None-it didn't work

Cons: Wouldn't work with windows 8.1.

Other Thoughts: Thought maybe it was my lack of knowledge so I waited until I visited my son who is a computer tecvh for a large national CPA firm. He tried to get it to work without success and finally told me there was something wrong with it .

4 out of 5 eggsGood external dvd drive

Pros: Decent external dvd drive size, not heavy, works with most of my dvd disks. Great for desktop builds that do not have internal drives like mine, since I built a mini-itx gaming rig.

Cons: The cover that opens does not seem to have good quality, but this is an inexpensive drive. The USB cable holder on the bottom of the drive is angled 90 degrees, which is a bit rough to place the cable in, will be a tight fit as well.

Other Thoughts: Overall, decent drive for the price. There was a newegg discount when I purchased this, which is part of the reason for getting this one.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Little Drive

Pros: Inexpensive at 14.99 and does what it's supposed to do. A single USB connection is all that is needed. Most others I looked at needed two.

Cons: Like others, the 3 or 4" USB cable is kind of absurd. I think the mfg was thinking the only use would be with it lying on a table directly beside a laptop computer. I solved the issue with a USB extension I have.
Not crazy about having to slide a button to the side to open it and a mechanical drawer would be easier, but I figure that would have added to the cost or caused the mfg to cheapen the drive in some way. It also might have taken more power than the singe USB connection gives.

Other Thoughts: I bought this from Newegg's e-B-a-y store. I would like to see purchases on that site become part of my Newegg account on the main site.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for Times You Need One

Pros: + Small
+ USB Powered
+ Has USB Cable, and stores it under the drive

Cons: - Slow
- A bit on the cheap feeling side
- NOT a DVD burner (I knew this before purchase, but these days, burners are expected)

Other Thoughts: I bought this as a backup in case I needed one for a PC or laptop that doesn't have an optical drive. It works very well for that.

The only reason I knocked an egg off was because this states it's 8x, but I have yet to see it go above 4x or 5x. I tested this ripping DVDs to my HTPC. I ripped several DVDs using my internal drive and hit speeds up to 12x, the same DVDs ripped in this drive maxed out at just under 5x.

Like I said, this drive is for when I'm in a pinch, but JUST BARELY more convenient than opening up the case and temporarily installing an internal drive, considering how slow this thing it.

4 out of 5 eggsboth, good and bad

Pros: small, light, cheap, storage place on the bottom for the USB cable so you dont loose it.

Cons: short cord, cheap, ROM only. It will read to both CD's and DVD's, but does not write or burn disks.

Other Thoughts: The cord that came with it is only about 8" long, from tip to tip. It is really short. On a positive note, they have a place for you to store that cable on the underneath of the ROM. It is a CD/DVD player only. It does not burn disks. It is built decent enough to work, but dont drop it too many times or it will break. It is cheaply made, but for the price I paid, I cant complain. If it cost more, i would have taken and extra star off. It has some light noise while it is running, meaning there is some there, but not very loud. It is not extremely quiet, but if doing something like listening to music, you will not notice it. I have heard other ROM's that were much louder then this one.

As for the cable, it does use a generic type of end, so finding a longer cable will be easy if you want to. But be warned of one thing. the size of the wire that it came with was 28/24 gauge, 2 channel each. that means there is 2 wires that are 28 gauge and 2 that are 24 gauge. Most cables come with 28/28, meaning all 2 wires are 28 gauge. The 24 gauge ones are the ones that power the device. If you try a cheap replacement cable that is 28/28, it probably will not work. a 24 gauge wire is about 60% thicker, and can handle 4 times the power of a thinner 28 gauge. 28 gauge can handle about .5 amps, or half an amp, while a 24 gauge wire can handle 2 amps, or 4 times the power. a 28/26 should work fine too, as I have tried it. Most wires are 28/28, so if you try a different wire and it does not work with it., that is most likely your problem.

Overall, i mainly bought this to hook up to computers that the ROM's may not work in them. So for me, this is fine. Since it is light weight, and small, it is very good for someone traveling too as it does not take up much space. For a cheap backup ROM, or for someone that travels, or someone who uses one of these occasionally, I do recommend it if you can get it cheap, mean 10-15, but it is not worth anything more then that. If you are going to use it a lot, buy something better.

2 out of 5 eggsnot MAC compatible

Pros: compact ; cheap

Cons: It's not working with my iMac. Box states that it's only Windows compatible. do not buy if you're looking to use it with MAC. It doesn't work with MAC. Did I mention, NOT MAC COMPATIBLE DESPITE DESCRIPTION. I'd return it but not worth the effort.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple solution to tablet software installation

Pros: I love this simple read-only drive. It saves me a lot of hassle of creating image file each time I want to install software from CD. It is very compact with a USB connection to your computer. I paid $10 w/ discount code and it is worth every penny.

Cons: None so far
