5 out of 5 eggsSony Optiarc BD-5850H-01

Pros: Great BD-R. Works as advertised and supports dual layer BD-R DL. Purchased to replace my DVD-R DL in my new Alienware m18x. Direct swaps with the DVD-R DL burner in my m18x.

Cons: Apparrenly I purchased the next one because I checked availability, and it's out of stock and its been discontinued.

Other Thoughts: if your in need of a BD-R DL burner for your laptop, don't hesitate trying to locate one, you will thank yourself.

I purchased a pata plextor BD-R DL about 6 or 7 years ago for my mid tower pc and it was over $800, and I purchased this BD-R DL burner for a little over $160, tremendous price difference from 7 years ago.

4 out of 5 eggsBlu-ray burner

Pros: It does everything you expect it would.

Cons: Because of the outer cover, it does not fit into Lenovo W530 laptops, possibly others. I presume it ill fit most - certainly Sonys - lol. Including optional front panels that would enable it to fit properly and allow correct installation is really a no-brainer Sony. Come on - a 50 cent piece of plastic couldn't be included? It makes this totally unusable in my laptop. In fairness, I have not contacted Sony or New Egg to find out if they have such a piece available, I just think it should have been included with the product regardless.

Also, no software included.

4 out of 5 eggsBeware what they don't tell you

Pros: Small BR writer, fit my new case

Cons: If, like me, you have never dealt with a slim optical drive, fitment is a little different. Biggest problem is the need for a Slim SATA power and data cable. The SATA connectors are completely different from standard SATA's. You WILL need this. Also, I did not have screws small enough to fit the really tiny mounting holes. #4 screws are WAY too big. I used some 3M double sided tape pads to just stick it down. Appears to be as solid as the little screws could have made it.

Other Thoughts: The need for the slim SATA cable could have been mentioned on the NE page for this drive, but I can't fault NE too much since the Sony website doesn't mention it either. I guess this is one of those things 'everybody knows'.
