Great price for Blu-Ray

white Reviewed By: Kuroyama on 10/12/2007
Rating + 4
Tech Level Tech Level: somewhat high - Ownership: 1 week to 1 month
Pros: Blu-Ray movies look great on a big screen. Low price. Burns everything but Blu-Ray. This is the only affordable HiDef player for an HTPC (who wants an external HD-DVD player with their HTPC?).
Cons: Doesn't burn Blu-Ray. Included software only plays in stereo (I bought the $72 PowerDVD Ultra on Newegg to get surround). Included software works only with Vista and only ATI HD2000 series or NVidia PureVideo HD video cards.
Other Thoughts: Save yourself $250 and buy this instead of a Blu-Ray burner. By the time Blu-Ray blanks are affordable you'll be able to get a $100 Blu-Ray burner. Before istalling the included software make sure to uninstall previous versions of WinDVD, or you'll get a region error. Also, to set the Blu-Ray region the first time in WinDVD you must first eject all disks.

Understand What You Are Buying

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: Excellent add-on device for HPTC
environments.
Cons: Does not burn blu-ray discs - only an issue for those wanting do so.
Other Thoughts: It continues to surprise me how many individuals in reviews state that their technical knowledge is high when obviously in many cases it isn't. Those reviewers who claim that this drive will not play blu-ray discs are incorrect. Using the proper software and hardware this unit is quite capable of both playing blu-ray discs and ripping images of the same to internal or external storage devices (although be forewarned that these ripped images typically will range in size from 25-35gb per movie). Due your own DD and learn about your software and hardware choices for making this drive an integral part of an HTPC.

Works for me

white Reviewed By: on 11/12/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: less than 1 day
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: It plays my blu rays, tested with both the last samurai and the matrix.
It had a low cost considering at time when I bought it.

Kudos to newegg for getting it to me fairly quick and in perfect condition.
Cons: Can't play blu rays, but I bought it knowing that.
Since its not retail, no sata cable.
Software they sent to play the blu ray didn't play my movies off the bat.
Other Thoughts: Installed AnyDVD HD, and it works properly with given software :)

It will work. Just need the right software.

Pioneer Reliability

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year
This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: -It's a pioneer, when it comes to optical drives they are awsome
-Reliable, no problems
-Quiet
-Fast (for what it is)
-Price ITS BLU RAY FOR this price
Cons: -NOTE: YOU DO NEED THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE TO PLAY BLU-RAY movies. However this plus the cost of the drive are still cheaper than a blu-ray player. so if you are adding on to a PC that you allready use for entertainment, go for it.
Other Thoughts: -AGAIN NOTE: Blu-Ray movies will not play without the proper software, which costs additional money, However again its still worth it for the drive + the software.
-I also discovered certain MOBOs with 6 ports have 4 available for RAID/HDDs/and optical drives, and the other two are set asside for a second RAID controler. Well when the other four are ocupied to complete a RAID 1+0 array, it kind of complicates things, so I bought a PCI SATA card for an additional $20 used.
