Quietly competent
- Pros: Reasonably quiet when it spins up and the tray moves smoothly and quietly. Speeds seem reasonable burning DVD+R single sided media & CDRs (using Roxio 2010). It reads DVD+R DL disks at least as quickly as a newer DVD burner. I haven’t tried the Blu Ray disk that came with the unit. Don’t have anything I want to burn that large right now. This unit reminds me of some older Plextor units I’ve owned; it’s quietly competent and doesn’t howl like a banshee when it spins up. I have a new Samsung DVD burner that has a particularly odious high pitched whine when it spins up that is like nails on a blackboard. This unit can be substituted for a regular DVD burner and most people won’t notice the difference. I remember paying 3 times as much for my first Sony DVD burner so the price seems quite reasonable.
- Cons: This is a long unit. I was going to put it into a Shuttle system I use as an HPTC but it’s too long. It’s the same length as my old NEC 3540 from a few years ago. I’ll put it in my big system so the size isn’t enough reason to return it.
- Other Thoughts: Not a simple bare drive as might be expected. Came with a SATA cable, a molex to SATA power adaptor and a CD with some old versions of Cyberlink programs. There is no box. The extra stuff is just put in with the drive. The included programs are several generations old and I don’t need them but they are an unexpected extra.
Good deal, but not perfect
- Pros: Inexpensive, looks nice, works properly, software is better than what's been included (if anything) with other cheap drives, but some people don't seem to get a copy of it. Burned DVDs were readable in two other drives, one of them quite old. Burned DVD and Blu Ray discs show all green in Nero 6 disc surface scan and I used Windiff to double check all data written to Blu Ray (Vinpower Digital) was identical to original. I always burn at the lowest possible speed for highest quality data.
- Cons: Would not read the install CD until I mounted the install CD on another system and installed the drivers. Others have said it reads CD/DVD with no new drivers, so it may depend on your system. Mine is winxp sp3 but without the latest patches.
I don't like its tiny eject button - it's hard to push. This may be a plus for some people. Software that came with it would not write a disc until I downloaded an update. Drive seems to be incompatible with Nero 6's "Disc quality test" on DVDs. The software just freezes and the drive keeps spinning with no light. Maybe a newer Nero fixes it.
- Other Thoughts: The software disc that comes with it is labeled "Super Multi Blue Install Disc for Windows". It includes a special "HLDS" version of Cyberlink's PowerDVD, Power2Go, MediaShow, PowerProducer, LightScribe, and LabelPrint. The software will only run with this burner and a few others.
Power2Go is the disc burner and I like the UI at least as much as Nero 6's. I tried burning a DVD and clicked "simulate writing" as an extra precaution. It sat at "Preparing..." for 35 minutes. It wasn't frozen and responded to my pressing cancel but did not actually cancel. I rebooted and tried again, waiting 1.5 hours with the same result. I downloaded http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/support/power2go/patches_en_US.html which upgraded the version to 6.0.3108 and allowed me to burn DVD and Blu Ray with no problem. http://www.cyberlink.com/stat/oem/lg/win7/enu/key.jsp has updates for PowerProducer and PowerDVD for Win7 until the end of Jan 2010.

Great burner
- Pros: It has it all. It even came with a sata cable, power connector, and software. Surprising package for an OEM drive. Straight forward installation.
- Cons: none
Great Drive
- Pros: Great drive, does everything it says perfectly. My old SATA dvd reader/writer died and I got this to replace it on the black friday sale (129.99).
At first I was nervous to use the drive for all purposes (playing DVD's, blu-rays, cds and burning all of those). Then I realized, there are different lasers for them and that I bought it to use... It's still kickin' after pretty steady use since purchase.
- Cons: Blu-Ray software is obnoxious... Unfortunately the codecs a) do not come with OEM drives and b) are not native to any OS yet. That being said - if you get one and are in the market for the software - absolutely get Corel WinDVD 2010 Plus for it. The other ones my friends have are finicky with drivers & hardware and have awful GUI's.
- Other Thoughts: I haven't compared these to other options, but for the price - this drive is great. I would be willing to buy it at the non-sale price if I hadn't already gotten one!
Good burner
- Pros: Burns blu-ray, dvd and cds with no problems. THe drive is faster than I thought it would be.
- Cons: The cost of blank blu-ray media. It takes an hour to burn a blu-ray disk. I can save the iso in about 15 minutes to my hard drive.
- Other Thoughts: Even though it was OEM my order came with the cyberlink blu-ray burning software and a sata cable. The drive works very well.
