5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Works, still, after 1y4m.

Cons: Not a huge con, but has a silver stripe on the front that doesn't really go with anything.

Other Thoughts: Purchased on 12/24/2010 to replace a failed drive where the blue laser stopped working. The failed drive wouldn't read blu ray movies anymore, so I gave the failed drive to my brother and ordered this one.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't purchase LG

Pros: It works with CD's & regular DVD's.

Cons: The Blu-ray software that comes with it is already out dated & won't play some Blu-ray discs. Also won't play a lot of the new Blu-rays just released. This is a waste of money if you want to play all Blu-rays, or you can spend another $50 to $100 more for software that works.

Other Thoughts: Most players have firmware upgrades to prevent customers from having to waste more hard earned money just to have the player function with Blu-rays.

5 out of 5 eggsBought two of them

Pros: Fast. Comes with PowerDVD 8. I don't care what anyone else says, PowerDVD is awesome. I put one in my HTPC and one in my six-core number cruncher. Both PowerDVD's installed straightaway and played blu-rays and DVDs without a hiccup. Considering the OEM version of this drive is only $10 less and PowerDVD retail costs $100 - the math is easy. As a final note, the version of PowerDVD bundled supports ATI Avivo video acceleration (awesome) and S/PDIF (optical), 2.1, 5.1, and 7.1 channel output. Honestly, from a functional standpoint, I can't tell it from the trial version of PowerDVD 10 I played with.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: For my HTPC, this LG drive replaced another LG blu-ray that was ~2.5 years old and finally pooped out. Crossing my fingers these new drives last as long or longer.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, but extra software neccesary

Pros: Plays dvd and blue-ray fast and quiet. Looks good.
I can't comment on quality after 2 weeks but I will update my review if anything breaks.

Cons: It won't play some of the newer Blue-rays(like Avatar) unless you update to Power DVD 10( it comes with Power Dvd 8)
or similar software.
Lg customer service sucks, the guy didn't know anything, told me to just get a different dvd and it will work.
I got Avatar brand new, no scratches what so ever.
A driver update will NOT solve that problem, you will have to purchase the software.

Other Thoughts: It's a good drive but extra software for 50-100$ just to play a Blue-ray?
I will go with Samsung again next time, they have good customer service.
Make sure you update the drive and video card driver.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from LG Products

Pros: Another followup to previous posts.

Cons: I just finally was able to contact LG Electronics Tech Support.
The VERY FEW TIMES I was allowed to speak I tried to ask what solutions were available for this AVATAR problem. He told me in no uncertain terms that LG does not have, will not have, and has no intentions of having, ANY FIRMWARE UPDATES to solve this problem. This tells me that we should STAY AWAY FROM LG OPTICAL DRIVES FOR ANY NEW MOVIES THAT COME OUT. I have to assume that Avatar will not be the last movie that comes out in this unplayable format.

Other Thoughts: The person I talked to at LG was quite possibly the rudest, most insensitive, most overbearing person I have ever encountered in a tech support or customer service situation.

1 out of 5 eggsAvatar Followup

Pros: This is a follow-up to my previous post. It now turns out that this unit refuses to play AVATAR in BluRay. I have done extensive research on this and a ton of people are having problems playing Avatar on a lot of units. From what I gather though, LG is not making the effort to do a firmware upgrade to play this movie.

Cons: I purchased the "Extended Collectors Edition" and I can't even play discs 2 or 3 which is just information about the making of the film. HUGE disappointment. The one biggest complaint I have though is that when you go to LG website and look for this unit, you can not find it.

Other Thoughts: There is one way and one way only to get to the manufacturer's website for this unit. Go though the details tab here at Newegg and navigate to Manufaturer's product page. Unfortunately, there is no where to go from there to do the firmware update that will make this unit play. If you want to play Avatar in bluray or quite likely future movies in the same BD format, stay away from this unit.

2 out of 5 eggsWill Not Play Newer Blurays

Pros: Excellent unit for standard DVDs and lightscribe. Included Powerdvd software will work wonderfully with exceptions.

Cons: I played several BluRay discs on this unit after completing the installing. Then I tried to play Avatar. It WILL NOT PLAY using the PowerDVD software that comes with the unit. I was told at Best Buy that I need to update the software. That's where it gets tricky. Neither Cyberlink nor LG will support the software update. Therefore, unless I want to pay for a complete upgrade this unit will not play the new format that Avatar and undoubtedly future movies will come in. This is a HUGE indictment of both LG and Cyberlink. At least LG will let you talk to a real person on the phone without charging you for phone support. As of now, I haven't decided whether to purchase the updated Cyberlink software or just not watch Avatar or any new movies on this unit. I have them streamed to my TV so I have to do something.

Other Thoughts: Probably won't ever buy any LG products again. They do not tell you what the limitations are.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a Blu-ray drive!

Pros: It plays Blu-rays!

Cons: I think my only qualm is that the bundled software requires an activation key for PowerDVD 8 which is not supplied with the drive, and needs to be obtained from Cyberlink. That was a bit annoying.

Other Thoughts: It plays Blu-rays!
