2 out of 5 eggsArrived DOA

Pros: Attractive looks
Included USB cable

Cons: Unit would not power on

Other Thoughts: This unit arrived DOA. You will read some descriptors pointing out how in the past it was sold with a two-to-one USB cable to provide additional power to the unit. The unit as is sold now arrived with a one-to-one cable and the unit did not power on.

I attempted to power on the unit attaching it to a 2.1amp charger, and it still would not power on.

I've had good experiences with LG in the past, but this was a disappointment.

If the unit did actually work and merely required the two-to-one cable, it is inexcusable to sell the product without it, but I cannot determine this.

5 out of 5 eggsWho needs a 5.25" optical drive now?

Pros: - Comes with everything you need to run on any computer with USB
- Cheap
- Installed Windows 8.1 pro fine
- doesn't need a power adapter
- UEFI bios boots off it no problems
- LG quality

Cons: - Slower than an internal drive
- No blue ray

Other Thoughts: In these modern times, a fast internet connection is more important than having an always-mounted internal optical drive. I have tried some of my old CD-rs and DVDs in this drive and it reads them just fine.

No more 5.25" drives for me.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the greatest

Pros: Cheap. Compact and portable.

Cons: Seems pretty flimsy. Upon arrival could not get it to work, even trying different cables. Only after I kind of tugged on the USB cable at the point where it enters the drive unit, did I manage to get it to work. This seems to suggest the connection or internals are a not entirely solid, as I would not expect the "connection" to be so sensitive to moving the cable. This does not bode well for the long-term viability of the unit, I fear.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't last long

Pros: Compact, light, transportable. I bought it to save space and remove it quickly from my small desk when not in use.

Cons: Didn't last 2 weeks. I missed the USB 2.0, I only have 3.0 external ports. It worked fine for a few CD spins, then would randomly skip, now it's a toss-up if it will even play a CD. I never got to writing, but I only wanted the player. LG support suggested a different media player but that won't fix a HW issue.

1 out of 5 eggsCheck the contents.

Pros: The model I have of GP50NB40 is supposed to come with a dual usb cable and it came with a single. LG has been failing in the quality check department, and perhaps in their assembly line overseas substituted another cable. It is what has been giving me issues with the dvd drive itself not being able to recognize any type of cd or dvd and instead keeps asking me to "insert cd". The issue is not a software or the software of your own pc. The laptop I have has win7. Please check the box properly as this is something someone else may have to go through with LG.

Cons: I called LG at the request of Newegg and that company was of no help. The overseas operator clearly was having a bit of a chuckle after I explained to him that LG included the wrong cable. This customer representative was so adamant that I indeed received the correct cable that in saying so went further to say that if "I wanted another cable to pay for it", otherwise return the whole item as it is defective in his opinion.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed with LG's response, and also with their customer service implying I "want a new shiny cable" to substitute the one they erroneously packed in this box.

1 out of 5 eggsworks good sometimes, maybe

Pros: works good if your computer can take it.

Cons: if it can't take it then it won't work correctly & may damage or destroy the computer. USB2.0 specifications state that the maximum current draw allowed per port is 500mA. this device needs 1.6A, which is over 3x the max allowed under the spec. i have a college degree in electronics & have had clients computers destroyed this way. i got 2 of these last year & they came with the y-cable but LG has now decided to take the cheap way out with this product & quit including the y-cable. even though this can damage equipment & cause the device to malfunction if the USB ports cannot take the hit from the current requirements being way out of spec. just using a USB3.0 port is not an answer either because the max current draw is 900mA per port.

Other Thoughts: this is a good drive PROVIDED your ports can provide the current which is over 3x the max allowed as per USB2.0 specs. it will probably work. i was told that it worked with the systems that LG tested it on. the problem is that it is way out of spec. i have looked at the surface mount fuses on the board for some of my ports on my systems & every single one is only rated at 750mA which means that if this drive is used, it may blow the fuse & disable the port. if the current is limited by the controller, it could destroy the controller which will take out all of the ports that that controller controls. if it is an I/O chip, it could do some serious damage. that is what happened to one lady i knew. if you get it & it works sometimes & sometimes it don't, i wouldn't use it on that system. me personally, i'm gonna be really careful which systems i use it on & use the y-cable from other drives that LG was supposed to provide in the first place & never buy another LG product! The rest is up to you.

1 out of 5 eggsJust plain doesn't write

Pros: Can read DVDs.

Cons: This unit wouldn't recognize two separate brands of DVD-R discs when I tried to burn an iso file. I got a third brand to work, but the unit lost power after about 2 seconds of writing. The drive came with a single mini usb cable, not the dual cable others have reported for extra power.
