5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Works?

Cons: Case is plastic, but for the price it's not a problem, at all.

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: Small, light, rips and burns disks.

Cons: Mac users: First, thanks Wesley J. (1/11/2014) for the workaround on the empty drive not being recognized by the Mac Finder when empty. Here's an even more convenient workaround. (I'm using it with a Mac Mini):

Navigate to: Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras

Double-click on the file named "Eject.menu" and an eject button icon will appear in your menu bar. If the eject icon is not where you like it, Command-drag the icon anywhere on the menu bar that you prefer.

This beats having to go through using the Disk Utility app.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for Its Intent

Pros: Easy to use, looks good, portable, speed, TV connectivity.

Cons: Somewhat cheap construction.

Other Thoughts: I received this yesterday, but let me give my first impressions.

Function: Some reviews say it's to read/write. It works just as fast as anything you'll get standard on a laptop. I already ripped disk and burned two, and it was just as fast as I expected. The only thing is it took longer to finish burning (using iTunes). This works just fine for everyday mild use.

Ease of use: Its very easy to set up. I just connected the USB cord and was able to use it right away without loading the software from disk. It's nice to not have the bloatware. It was easy to set up for the TV. Just follow the instructions. Unfortunately, my TV apparently doesn't read from the USB input. I guess they're just there for power. Unfortunate, but this is a TV problem, not a Drive problem.

Appearance: It doesn't look fancy, but the matte finish makes it look clean. Simple, but nice.

Construction: Yes, as some reviews point out, the construction of the drive is a bit flimsy. I expected this from a drive listed as "slim", so I'm not surprised. Here's my solution - keep all the packaging. The box it comes in is still only about 2 inches thick and has foam support, so the drive is very secure in there. I feel like I could throw this package in a backpack and it would be fine. My biggest concern is the tray. I was expecting that this drive needed a gentle touch, but the first few disks were very tight and needed a little muscle. Hopefully this loosens over time, and I'll just pray that I don't need to get too rough with it.

Overall: It works great for its intended use. If you need a super-fast drive that is built solidly, you shouldn't be buying a $30 drive. But if you just need something affordable for day-to-day use and you can be gentle, you can't go wrong with this one.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it should

Pros: I bought this for my HP Revolve 810 G2 since it has no DVD drive and also wanted to retire the drive in my desktop PC to save room as well.

This does the job perfectly. Windows has no problems with it and neither do the multiple Linux distro's I tested it with (Ubuntu, Mint, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Fedora).

Cons: While it does feel flimsy, it's not worth docking an egg off. As long as you take care of it, then it should last you.

Other Thoughts: None.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised on Linux

Pros: I bought this to use in conjunction with an Acer Linux notebook. For a test, I plugged it into my desktop Gentoo/KDE system, which recognized it instantly. I tried dvdbackup on a CD-R video I had previously recorded on my desktop DVD burner, and it read the whole disk without issues. I then burned a few ISO images with the K3B program to some CD+R disks I had lying around. They passed the verify check, and K3B reported an estimated write speed of 7.84x; fairly close to the advertised 8X speed.

Cons: Like all slim portable DVDs it's mechanically frail with the drive door extended--treat it gently. The provided USB cord is exactly 23" long so this drive will have to reside close to a USB A socket.

Other Thoughts: I bought this device primarily for its M-Disc capability, which I'll test later when the disks arrive. This device will join my 3-1/2" USB external floppy drive in my collection of hardware intended to fight off long-term obsolesence by the manufacturers of 'permanant' storage solutions.

5 out of 5 eggsLG DVD rewriter

Pros: The device works as advertised. I only needed the device to read music CDs and import songs onto my laptop. The dvd drive on my HP died and i didnt care about replacing it instead i went with this LG external dvd device which works exactly how i want it to.

Cons: I dont like the fact that it needs 2 USB ports, not a huge deal more a personal preference and i knew this going in but still bugs me.

1 out of 5 eggsflimsy, buggy and poor buil;d quality

Pros: None

Cons: This drive was underwhelming the moment I opened the package and I have suffered only disappointment after disappointment ever since.

Buggy - It often, right from unboxing required a very long time to aquire discs and sometimes would require multiple ejections and reclosings in order to read a disc, CD, DVD amd DVD-RW.

Flimsy - It has poorly fitted and thin plastic walls that deform with fingertip pressure deep into the enclosure. It warps and twists with minimal effort. The plastic casing fits together poorly. The cord is VERY short. Forget plugging this into your laptop and watching a DVD while sitting on the couch, this thing has to sit next to you, rather than on your coffee table. It seriously is less than 24" long.

Finally it DIED after I had owned it only a month, one week into my deployment. I am on a ship, not kicking in doors in afghanistan, it should be able to handle going into and out of a backpack once. Nope

Other Thoughts: This device seriously soured me on LG. I bought this drive because LG is somewhat of a more quality brand. I am not so sure anymore.

4 out of 5 eggsSlim and nice

Pros: I bought a HDD caddy to replace my laptop optical DVD drive, so I decided to buy this since it was at a decent price, and it turned out pretty well.

-Great Design and made with nice material. Matte finish on the top of the drive About 3/5 of an inch thick.
-Don't need another source for power, just plug in the USB
-Easy to access eject button.

Cons: -It reads a little slow. It'd take about 5-8 secs for the next track on the CDs I play to load. (I've yet to try to burn a DVD so I can't say much about the writing speed)
-Isn't full matte finish
-Can actually be a bit loud if you're close to it, but hardly noticeable when you're playing music or watching something
-Not USB 3.0
-When laid flat on a surface, it can be annoying to push the drive shut.

Other Thoughts: A great buy if you're in the need for an external drive.
