3 out of 5 eggsMy Review

Pros: Lightweight. Small. Works. Low power. Simple. Looks nice.

Cons: Plastic.

The spring that kicks the top lid open broke soon after a little use. I can still open it by simply pulling it open but it was nice to have it spring open when I used the button. For guys who serve their nation in the military, it can be a bit difficult utilizing warranties when we get deployed.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Worked great right out of the box. I am running Windows 7 32 bit on my laptop and did not need to load any additional drivers. I used this drive with my 17 inch widescreen laptop to watch HD movies in th car on a trip to Florida. Sure beat the old 10 inch DVD player! All in all a super buy. I would definately buy another if i needed one!

Cons: The only knock on this item is the USB cord is real short. I just used the cable from my Garmin and it worked for me.

3 out of 5 eggsSomewhat worth it

Pros: 1) Inexpensive.
2) Works off of USB; no external power supply needed.
3) Haven't had any issues with blu-rays not playing, but...

Cons: 1)...after a new firmware update, blu-rays occasionally pause, to the point where it's unwatchable. It stops and starts. Watching Transformers 3, it would occur every 5 minutes. Another reviewer had the same issue. 2) The read speed is terrible. Don't bother trying to skip or fast foward a blu-ray scene, because you'll have to wait a few seconds for it to re-read the disc.
3) It can be loud.
4) The ridiculously bright spastically blinking blue light. I don't need a light telling me it's working and reading the disc. I can tell it's working by seeing a movie on my screen. Get some masking tape, or else your dark room will feel like a dance club with a blue strobe light when watching a movie.

Other Thoughts: My advice is to find yourself some blu-ray ripping software with this device. Rip the blu-ray to your hard drive. Of course, you'll have to wait an hour for the ripping process, but afterwards:
--the movie loads WAY quicker off your hard drive
--you can jump to any section of the movie without skipping a beat
--and, you now have a back-up copy of your movie

If you do that, this player is totally worth the price.

2 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work like it should

Pros: It's external, it's cheap.

Cons: It wouldn't read my Blu Ray discs and the DVDs would freeze for a few seconds every now and then.

Other Thoughts: I would buy a different external drive, I had no luck with this one, it definitely was not worth the price.

2 out of 5 eggsDon't upgrade firmware

Pros: Small, no power adapters necessary, and stylish.

Cons: Worked fine until I was troubleshooting the new Fox copy protection that prevented my software from playing the new Star Wars Blu-Ray release. Noted that a new firmware (v1.10) was released and gave it a try. Ever since, it has caused intermittent pauses and other glitches every few minutes. My advice would be to not upgrade to the v1.10 firmware.

Other Thoughts: Wrote Plextor's forums (Plextor's recommended support option) and haven't heard a response in over two weeks. Just found their email and phone support contacts and will try them next.

4 out of 5 eggsGood, just good.

Pros: The price

Cons: Made just about completely out of plastic.

Constantly makes this weird noise like it's reading something, even if there's nothing in it.

Other Thoughts: Good for the price considering it's a blu-ray player, great option for people who have laptops that don't have disk drives.

4 out of 5 eggsDrive: good. Software: defective by design.

Pros: Successfully reads blu-ray, DVD and CD, including booting from disk on my tablet which lacks internal. I think the pop-top gives it a nice retro feel. Nice minimalist appearance, though the ripple effect seems a tad extravagant. Included smudge cleaning cloth. Included PowerDVD 9 BD software works; playback is smooth. (Not sure about surround sound, I don't have such a setup.)

Cons: USB cable is a bit short (just under 2'), but hasn't been a problem so far. Yes it makes some noise, but really not that bad... quieter than most external optical drives I've seen. If you want silence, you gotta go internal.

What loses an egg is the included PowerDVD. Yes it tries to advertise to you, but that's not what bugs me most. Apparently Blu-ray previews are even more obnoxious and prevalent than DVD ones, and the software makes it impossible to skip them. Even the chapter seek buttons and time seek bar are disabled. I realize this behavior is likely mandated by the studios but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Yet again the pirates get a better experience than the paying customers. When the open source world fully supports bluray decryption and playback it will be a happy day.

Other Thoughts: Wish it used Micro instead of Mini USB, since all the phones are using that these days. But then someone would complain that their old mini cables didn't fit.

Hoping to install PDVD on both my desktop and HTPC... I went external so I could share the drive between them. It's unclear how many activations are allowed. If not then that'll be another chunk of money.

1 out of 5 eggsfrustrating

Pros: light, portable, nice looking. powered off usb cable.

Cons: big blue light distracting when watching movies. noisy, but may be just all blue ray drives? Broke after 8 months of minimal use. plextor website is horrible and forces selection of non-existant options in order to claim warranty. Still waiting for response for return autorization.

Other Thoughts: never been too happy with blue ray players or this blue ray drive. They seem to take an extremely long time to read and a very picky about being clean (no fingerprints allowed).

2 out of 5 eggsIt's just ok

Pros: It is a Blu Ray. It needs no additional power, it looks cool

Cons: No Firmware updates, thus it will not play 40% of the Blu Ray disks I put in it, regardless of the player. The power is iffy, it is loud.

Other Thoughts: Save your $$, it is really not worth it. Nice try Plextor. Try again.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Little Drive, Big picture.

Pros: Beautiful picture, no AC power cord needed (!), powered by USB port.
Very small footprint.
Sweet finish.
No AC power cord needed!
Supports 3D.
Its Blu-ray.

Cons: None, its Blu-ray.

Other Thoughts: Got this in January and have used the heck out of it. Compact, reliable and sharp-looking. Quiet and stays cool. No stutter, wow/flutter or jitters. Very smooth playback. Tremendous value.
