Color laser printing has been made affordable by Brother with their HL-4040CN printer. It’s not just color, it’s fast, high quality color. It will print 21ppm in black or color at a 2400x600dpi resolution. When you need high quality color prints fast, the HL-4040CN delivers.
It can deliver for you and your work group, too, since it has both a USB and an Ethernet connection. Compatible with Window, Mac and Linux operating systems, it functions well in a varied environment. The front USB port is a PictBridge port so you can print directly from USB drives and compatible cameras.
Brother has a strong reputation in printers and copiers. Try this one for yourself and see!

Great deal!
- Pros: Print quality is excellent for a small office or home user. Toner is significantly less expensive than the equivalent ones for an HP, and very easy to change. The printer is completely silent while not printing, and has an attractive design with a normal sized footprint.
- Cons: The only cons that come to mind are the control panel could have been oriented different, scrolling through the menus uses the up/down buttons instead of left/right, but not a big issue once you get used to it. Also the box it comes in is unnecessarily huge ... at 6'1" I could easily curl up and take a nap inside there. I may give it to a neighbor's kid for use as a tree house.
- Other Thoughts: The printer was easy to set up on a network, has a great price point, and seems to be built with quality materials inside and out. Definitely would recommend to anyone wanting to make the switch from inkjet to laser.

- Pros: Works great. I use Ubuntu Linux x64 and had no problems with the Linux drivers on Brothers site. I work on laser printers for a living and this printers Quality is that of most printers twice the price. This printer is very quiet compared to most laser printers.
- Cons: none.
- Other Thoughts: I put in a generic 512mb PC133 memory I had and the printer had no problems with it, improved the speed of large print jobs.

Brother HL-4040CN
- Pros: During 6 months of light (10-20 pages) personal home document printing, this printer:
is quieter than my tower fans and hard drives, even while printing. Totally silent when sleeping, has never jammed,
consistently delivers excellent color document print quality,
shipped fast and set up right out of the box, is not, and was not advertised or purchased as a picture printer,
is plenty fast starting and printing multiple copies, using USB interface,has print software that is easy to use, adequately flexible and configurable without unnecessary complication.
Makes us perfectly happy with Brother and we were already delighted with newegg.com following about 10-12 years of business with them! We purchased it at a good price for a color laser printer. I have used other monochrome and color lasers and prefer this one.
- Cons: If high-volume duplex printing or picture printing are important to you, examine other printer options.
My suggestion, based on previous experience, is to use separate printer - inkjet for pictures, laser for documents - in addition to a good quality flat-bed scanner if you need these services for a home or small business environment. Avoid MPC's.
- Other Thoughts: Unless you wish to print pictures directly from a digital camera, the front USB port is superflous. (Minor point)
watch out for faulty cartridges
- Pros: nice quality prints, speed is satisfactory and price was good for a laser printer
- Cons: I had an original magenta cartridge that was used very little that came with the new printer, (used approx 50 pages)with a manufacturers defect that Brother would not stand behind because it was out of warranty. I had to spend $75 to replace it. The price per print per page on that cartridge was $1.50 per page!!!
Not happy with Bothers customer service!
- Other Thoughts: Very happy with Neweggs's service.
Works pretty well
- Pros: Starts printing in an acceptable time, prints multiple pages quickly. Manual duplex is handy. Toner still shows full after months of use.
- Cons: First one came with a serious defect that prevented paper feeding. Brother set me up with an (unfortunately) refurbished model, free of charge. Color isn't amazing, but is acceptable if you aren't printing photos. Fairly loud, but most laser printers are.
- Other Thoughts: Overall it was definitely a worthwhile purchase!
