1 out of 5 eggsterriable, last brother I will ever buy

Pros: If you have paper you don't like, it ruins it for you.

Cons: spatters every page with random toner in streaks, splotches, you name it.

4 out of 5 eggsBoy was I disappointed

Pros: Excellent printer, as usual the print speed is great after an initial startup but takes awhile for the first page (Mac). Print quality is wonderful. Printer has a built-in html page or website where you can change settings. My older Brother printers I have to talk to CUPS on its port.

Cons: HEAVY! I was first disappointed with the graphics quality of some posters I made. But found out I could set the 'Toner Save' off in the 'General Printer' settings and the quality was better than my Brother inkjet. I'm a happy camper now :)

I've seen information about how to reset the toner cartridges, I'll see what I have to do when the time comes.

Other Thoughts: Guess I'll decide whether to buy another printer or a set of cartridges when the time comes. I've used all kinds of paper while trying to fix the color problem I experienced and the printer took it all in style. I'm impressed!

5 out of 5 eggsOh wow!

Pros: Not exactly easy to install on my network, but after I quit the beer and ate dinner it was a lot smoother. 'sides that I was a lot stronger :)

Cons: The 'Quick Start' was really confusing. Too many options. I don't like the 'Secure Easy Setup'. My network, I'll control it! So ended up doing it from the LCD menu. Appears I need to set the duplex settings for each print even tho' I told the printer (via the LCD menu) to always duplex. Thats why I bought the darn thing!

Other Thoughts: Wow is it heavy - I feel sorry for my UPS guy. At least I have a cart, and begged my wife :)

If I have another opinion, I'll make sure I update the comments when my opinion changes. But right now, I'm impressed!

4 out of 5 eggsVery happy with my brother

Pros: Fast printer, very good quality text, decent quality color images, wireless

Cons: Color images could be a bit better, but quite good for a laser printer. Wireless can be difficult to set up.

Other Thoughts: I've had my Brother for several years and love it. I am an art historian, so speed and quality of both text and images matter. I bought the printer to print my dissertation (multiple copies of a 400 pg. document, incl. about 50 pgs. of images per copy), under a very strict deadline, and it worked perfectly-- MUCH better than expected. I can't imagine the headaches an ink jet would have caused-- maybe slightly better image quality, but not worth the wait and poorer text quality. My only complaint is the wireless set-up, which should be easier. Overall-- I love this machine.

1 out of 5 eggsBAD customer service + cost you more long run

Pros: It prints it doesn't give you any problem with it.

Cons: it is bad customer service. My original toner spill all over my printer customer service + supervisor threat me bad and didn't even change the parts or the unit for spill cartridge. you are on your own if you buy this printer and don't forget about the expensive parts you have to keep change it. yes you have to change 5-6 parts for this printer + ink. drum unit every 15000 pages. belt unit , pf kit mp , pf kit 1 , fuser unit. I mean you have to change this parts printer gives you warnings after certain pages and this units cost between 60-150$

Other Thoughts: Don't buy it . you will disappoint in long run.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat printer with a couple of quirks

Pros: Fast, Inexpensive, Low cost-per-page, Duplex works well, Wireless access makes it very convenient, Very good text quality, Adequate photo quality for a laser printer, Great design makes it very easy to replace toner cartridges and drum unit

Cons: Wireless setup requires that you know what you're doing, Low toner indicators may initially indicate all cartridges need to be replaced when they don't (see below), It's heavy (70 lbs., I think?)

Other Thoughts: This has been a terrific printer for me. I found that all of the low toner indicators flashed together at about 1,400 pages or so. HOWEVER, after resetting the indicators (simple process through the front panel), they now work individually for each cartridge. I got about 1,500 pages from the standard-capacity black that came with the printer, and about 1,600-1,700 from the color cartridges.
When a cartridge was nearly empty, it would start to leave blobs and streaks on the page. Replacing the cartridge in question cleared that up and returned me to very good print quality. I figure my cost-per-page for toner is less than 8 cents, which is a third what I spent on ink for my old ink-jet printer.
When I first got it, I was underwhelmed by the photo quality. Changing settings in the driver, however, gave me MUCH better photos. The biggest difference was turning OFF the "Improve gray printing" setting. Take a look at the settings, if you don't like the quality you're getting.

2 out of 5 eggsPrinter OK, toner counting is a scam

Pros: -Easy network set up
-Fast printing

Cons: -Cartridges report being low when there is signficant (~50%) toner left in them. When a cartridge is low, it will not let you print at all. If a yellow cartridge is low, it will not let you print in black and white at all.
-Image quality is below average. Not necessarily bad, just below average (but it is an inexpensive printer). Ink jets would have similar or better quality.

Other Thoughts: The printer uses a page counter to determine whether your printer toner is low. However, resetting this counter doubled the life of the toner after the printer refused to print. Why offer a "toner saver" setting in the print driver if you are merely counting the number of color pages print?! I would have given this 1 out of 5 eggs, except I found the "code" on how to reset the page counter (google: "brother 4070 end of life", and look for a post by "tsatiyeh"). From a conservation/"green" point of you it is very irresponsible to waste so much toner, and from a business point of view it is a money trap (buying toner 2x's more often). I will not buy another brother printer after seeing them do that. Sure, every company does something like this (force you to buy their consumables at a high rate), and I tolerate it to a good deal - but this was ridiculous seeing how much longer the toner lasted after I reset the counters in my printer.

5 out of 5 eggsBEAST, full featured

Pros: Great print quality. Your not going to rival ink jets on photo prints, but this is still a great print quality. Not quite print to edge, but pretty close. My drum came with a little gunk on the drum. Following brothers FAQ, I cleaned the part of the drum with a qtip and out came my little line! Took a little work, but for the price, and the print and features. I love it. Duplexing is WONDERFUL. This printer can be detected by windows explorer by navigating to the IP of the printer. Most cheap network printers won't do this. It did not auto server me the print driver for XP, but it cut my network install time down from 10 min to 1 min. And I still gotta do 10 more installs, so much faster.

Cons: From what I hear, a good number of these printers are shipping with little bits of adhesive on the drum. It's annoying, but a little qtip and some time make the printer more than worth it.

Other Thoughts: I have not had this printer for an long time, but so far, it's GREAT.

4 out of 5 eggsOH Brother

Pros: High quality construction. Direct print of PDF and photos from USB drive. Wireless is really nice, dont have more wires running about my office.

Cons: None really..

Other Thoughts: After about 100 pages of printing, the magenta toner started to leak and deposit excess toner on the edge of the paper.
Contacted Newegg and they said they can only replace the entire product, not indivdual consumables, which what I expected. Next, I contacted Brother, waited about 15 minutes before speaking to TS. They couldn't help me and call was escelated. Brother will replace the cartridge, but I have to provide a serial number from the INSIDE of the printer (the one on the back isnt sufficent) and a 20 digit serial number on the toner. In addition, they want page counts from the printer, then they will send me a new cartridge. In the meantime, I can print, but its annoying to have the blobs show up.
Overall, I would say its good tech support and I am pretty happy with my purchase.
