2 out of 5 eggswarranty issues

Pros: cheap and easy to initially set up and works great when it works

Cons: warranty is a joke read the following that i've sent to brothers. don't expect a response but made me feel better:

we have a brothers printer that is slightly less than one year old and has had very little use. this machine has an obvious hardware problem but we cannot get past the call center's trouble shooting routing. we have literally spent hours on the phone plus almost 100$ in new print cartridges doing diagnostics on the phone. have had to do the same routine multiple times. machine give various error codes most predominant is paper jam but to clear this we only have to lift lid close it back or turn machine off and back on then we can print another job. this is generaly after each print job. now the machine will not print an acceptable print quality test page. alignment is off. have emailed these results to customer support group with no response. we have been informed that this printer is under warranty but there is no way short of spending more hours going through your recommended test procedure again.
bottom line is you offer a warranty on paper only and it is painfully obvious that there is no intention of honoring any warranty.

Other Thoughts: this printer has had very little prints run since we bought it. have other brother printers in office and more than satisfied with them but this particular on is junk

1 out of 5 eggsI hate it

Pros: It has two trays. Ink is easy to change.

Cons: Paper jams, weird errors, wasted paper, poor scan quality, manual feed takes 10 tries to accept the paper, crooked printing, intrusive alerts, won't stay connected to wifi, loud and annoying.

Other Thoughts: This thing is awful. When I have to print something I can expect to spend anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes trying to get a decent print out of it. After a year of use I'm pretty sure it's about to stop working, even after cleaning I can't get a clear print from it. Even when it was working right you couldn't do simple things like print on partially used check stock - if any part of the sheet was gone it wouldn't recognize the paper size and would just give an error. Also the manual feed in the back only allows printing one page at a time which has been an inconvenience on a few occasions. I do not recommend buying this printer.

2 out of 5 eggsPaper jams are frequent.

Pros: If one has patience this machine will eventually deliver good quality printing. Ink is easy to replace. It looks sleek sitting on top of our file cabinet.

Cons: We've had this printer just over a year. This printer has frequent paper jams. For a 20-page print job, if it doesn't jam altogether, we'll probably have 21 pages of output with one of the screen pages split vertically across two physical pieces of paper. And, we've yet to print a set of envelopes without the printer jamming at least once. Speaking of envelopes, if you follow the tiny envelope icon molded into the plastic as you orient the envelopes you place in the tray, your envelopes will be printed upside-down. Also, the electronic keypad is nonintuitive for setting defaults. Also, faxing can (apparently) only be done from the printer's electronic keypad rather than from a computer menu.

Other Thoughts: I predict we'll go back to HP next time.

5 out of 5 eggsThe best.

Pros: I look forward to purchasing Brother printers. This is my third and I purchased it as a large format printer. Brother has the lowest cost ink. It was easy to set up and not as noisy as others have mentioned. It's sound is not the least bit annoying when printing. It has a very small footprint. My other Brother printers are both lasers - each 3 years old and working flawlessly day in and day out.

Cons: None.

2 out of 5 eggsUNIQUE design fails prior usage

Pros: Unpacked and set up nicely
Unique Printing page top to bottom !!!
Fewer head passes to cover the page
Not as deep as paper held sideways

Cons: Unique Printing page top to bottom !!! - Prevents normal page usage of preprinted Checks where one is printed and removed then the remainder fed in. Normally printers register and start on the 8.5" leading edge - this printer takes and measures the paper to feed on the long edge and the trays won't take short paper and the manual feed tray refuses when the 11" edge doesn't start. Two phone hours with Tech Support and the closest to working was 8.5x14 legal paper setting one time allowed it to work but only once then even after a printer unplug cycle it seems to refuse to do it again. Perhaps I need to restart my computer after more than a few changes to the printer settings it may be confused too.

This printer needs to go back as this TYPICAL application supported by 'normal printers' can not be achieved with this 'Unique' printer.

Other Thoughts: Spent two hours on phone with tech support after trying all options myself and the design of this makes it think SIDEWAYS. It doesn't start on the 8.5" paper edge - it refuses paper that is not 11" tall as it feeds on the long edge [when 8.5 x 11 selected]. Even Manual feed does this - legal side must feed on 8.5 edge but that doesn't seem to offer a robust solution.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far!

Pros: Fast, prints 11 x 17, auto doc feeder for scanning. Decent canned software. Easy to use.

Cons: A bit loud. Manual feed can only take one sheet a time. Seems kind of cheaply made.

Other Thoughts: I saw some complaints about how loud it is and was expecting it to be much louder. It really isn't all that loud. Maybe it's about as loud as the old HP Deskjets from the late 90s.
Also saw complaints about how to get to the cords (inside the machine), but really, it's not a big deal. The instructions are quite clear.
It seems a bit cheaply made, but so far it's working great. I love being able to scan via a doc feeder and printing to 11" x 17" paper is excellent. The scanning by doc feeder sometimes results in crooked scans, but that doesn't bother me.
I guess if you're really concerned about noise, or super high-quality document-fed scanning, this wouldn't be the printer for you. But, I really can't imagine you could do much better for the price!

2 out of 5 eggsReturning it

Pros: Color of printer. Good for graphic and photo printing. Although I have not tried to use it for graphic printing, but this is the impression it gives me.

Cons: Everything I can think of! Sorry Brother Lovers of this product. Its VERY loud, Very cheaply (flimsy )made thought it was going to break just opening the top (by the way to attach a phone line or a internet cable you have to open the top plug it INSIDE the printer then run the line along this slot and out the back (vs just easy at reach if it was pluged into the back of the printer like most. If you were printing and had to connect or disconnect say the phone line you CAN'T. Because you have to open the printer main lid (under the scanner lid) to do it.

Touch screen is so small I had to use a pen to use it. (a computer pen with the rubber end) , VERY slow! It is WIDER then my LexMark Pro 905 (WHICH I will be KEEPING now! ) The desktop control panel is very clunky and time consuming if you need to switch trays. (which I do alot). You do not have much control over how you want to print. My LexMark Pro 905 give me more control, its MUCH faster, Larger touch screen, and not as wide as this Brother. Yes the Lexmark is tall by 4-5".

Other Thoughts: I know there are many positive reviews. And I am glad it works for me. But for me I want something fast, easy to read the touch screen from 7ft away. Easy to remove the phone or the internet cable from without opening the printer. Since my printer is only 7ft from where I sit. I want something not as loud and nosily. And good grif faster. I am returning this printer today and keeping my LexMark Pro 905. PS the Ink does not go as far as they claim and cost more vs the LexMark

3 out of 5 eggsGood but few quirks

Pros: Works with my surface tablet and cell phones. Install was easy. Prints fast.

Cons: Loud! Everytime it prints I feel like its gonna jump off the desk. Not sure if I got a dud, but definitely makes you jump when the GF prints from another room and im in the office next to it. Also it seems to print very lightly as if its faded, text comes out light and hard to read. This may be a setting ive missed but have looked ad nauseum.

Other Thoughts: Overall im not horribly disappointed but also not overly impressed. Ive always stuck with HP and this was my first venture into brother. Im willing to work with it more as HP has always had their own issues as well.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good so far

Pros: Much faster than my old (5 yrs) HP inkjet; large paper capacity; duplex printing saves paper. Scanner/photocopier/fax feeder works well. Sleeps & wakes when needed. Very easy home network setup (I have it on LAN).

Cons: Can't figure out how to turn off ring on incoming phone calls - and it's loud! May just have to unplug from wall.

Other Thoughts: Included software only has three licenses - -but you don't need it if you're just printing. Drivers can be found for free on the manufacturer's website.
