does this printer have an ethernet connection?

Yes, this printer has both wireless and ethernet connectivity available.  It took me a few minutes to find it, the ethernet port is inside the scanner cover, there is a cable path to route it out of the back of the printer.

two sided printing?

Yes, but I personally don't like the print qualiy of the printer in general. I maybe got a dud but everything prints is very light as if its faded, and for the life of me I cant get it to print darker.

Can you scan multi-page documents from the feeder or can scanning only be done from the flatbed?

As Michael B said it can up to to 20 pages. You will love this machine. Best printer I have ever owned and the price here through 12-14 can not be beat.

Is the scanner on this unit a flatbed scanner so credit type cards can be scanned?

Yes, the flatbed scanner can scan credit cards.  
Note that this all-in-one printer/scanner does a good job with most things, but it can be a bit slow for printing, and can also be a bit noisy.  Other than that, I'm quite satisfied.  I use it for my home office, and don't use it in high volume, so the delays and noise aren't a big problem for me.

Can the brother mfc j4610w scan negatives of 35 mm photos and slides?

I haven't tried it.  It should be able to scan slides as they are a positive, thenegatives may not work too well.  If your camera is digital it will plug into the printer or the memory chipp will work also.

How is its handling of card stock paper?  I print insertable name tags for my clients that are a light card stock grade.

I haven't tried card stock, but I think it might do ok using the manual feed in the back. One issue is paper size - the printer takes the paper in sideways so you can't do partial sheets or non-standard sizes - it will reject the paper and refuse to print. This has been an issue with check printing; if a sheet is missing a check I can't print on the other two any more and have to throw that unused check stock away. Also you can only load one sheet at a time in the manual feeder which might also be an issue for you.

There are other printers that say they have automatic duplex printing but when you purchase the printer come to find out you have to purchase a separate component to make it print double sided.  Does this printer print duplex right out of the box?

Yes it does print on both sides of paper. When printing just select print on both sides.

Can this printer be hooked up to any brand of computer, say HP, Dell, Mac, etc...??

It's not the brand that matters as much as the operating system. I have the printer working fine on 64-bit Windows Vista. They include instructions for setting it up on other versions of Windows as well as Mac OS, and I have seen documentation for Linux drivers for Brother printers as well.

If you're not sure what all that means then the answer is most likely yes, it should work with your computer.

WILL THIS DEVICE PRINT DIGITAL PHOTOS?

Yes it will. You can either print from your computer or an SD card from a digital camera.
