2 out of 5 eggsHP Office Pro 8600

Pros: Good Print quality

Cons: Get error messages about non existent jams. Erroneous error messages about missing print cartridges. Error messages about network disconnect.

Other Thoughts: Very disapointed in this printer. I doubt that I'll invest in an HP again...

5 out of 5 eggsFinally a great printer from HP again

Pros: price, quality of printing, overall cost of operation and easy functionality. Very easy to easy with the LCD screen that I bought one for my 75 year old mom to use and she fax's and scans all the time!

Cons: Cant think of any major ones

Other Thoughts: Fist purchase one about 2 years ago. So impressed that we bought a second, then a third then a forth as we grew. I am a tech former tech professional who left a big company and started my own business. HP had gone way downhill for a few years, producing nothing but junk, but they seem to have caught their second wind now and their product line is almost back to their high quality. We use this thing for EVERYTHING....printing labels for products, scanning paper work to jpg and pdfs right onto our network or into an email or workstation, printing from our phones, OCR, copying, making color presentations EVERYTHING. 3 are connected by CAT 5 and the other via wireless. No problems flawlessly. I dont find it expensive with the HP cartridges, dont like buying generic because they usually leak or are just cheap period. Just watch for sales and you will never complain about the price.

Love not hesitate to buy one.

1 out of 5 eggsHP OfficeJet Pro 8600 - True High Cost Per Page

Pros: Fast

Cons: On February 6, 2014 I bought an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 all-in-one, including the OPTIONAL tray 2.

I use it in my home office with five computers.  One is a new Apple MacBook Pro OS 10.9.5, another is a three year old HP Laptop on Windows 7, and another is a five year old Dell Desktop still on Windows XP.

I bought the printer to . . . print.  I thought I might be a nice convenience to write business correspondence and print an envelope, without the need to change paper, or otherwise touch the printer until I was ready.

The printer is advertised, even in the user manual and box, to be capable of 1200 dpi printing, even though it uses the below average PCL Print Driver and not Post Script.

The printer works fine, but the HP driver and utility software must be written for a different printer.  If I put HP Inkjet 20# paper in tray 2, and #10 envelopes in a locked tray 1, I can print at the "best print setting" which still isn't great.  But it works.

If I put HP Premium Presentation Paper 32# paper in tray 2 ($8.00 per 100 sheets), and the same quality #10 envelope in tray 1, the printer software loses it's mind.  It performs the same on all five computers.

When I try to print a business letter and envelope the print driver and HP utility grays out tray 2, and it grays out the "best" print setting.  In short the only choice is NOT to use HP brand papers, or remove tray 2, print the business letters, and then remove the 8.5X11 HP Premium Paper, install envelopes, and print again.  Not what I had in mind.

I've been in touch with HP as the printer is still under warranty.  They offered a replacement, that will have the same printer an utility problems, or to buy it back at $175.

I bought the original printer for $249, tray 2 for $125, and 5 XL print cartridges for $149.  That is a total of $588.  If I sell it back to HP check out the cost per page.  At $588 - $175 = $413/2742 total pages = 15 cents a page!  Owch!!!

There is nothing wrong with the printer as such.  The problem is the HP Utility and Driver.  When did HP stop using a traditional warranty, and give pennies on the dollar, when they clearly have a software problem, they refuse to fix?

Other Thoughts: Nothing wrong as such with the printer. It is in the HP device monitor and HP drivers. They must be for another printer. It took me over 45 hours to set it up, and get it to work with all five of my computers. When I first got it I was on the phone with HP for 9 hours and got sent to 53 queues. Now HP wants to stiff me for pennies on the dollar.

1 out of 5 eggsgood for a year

Pros: works well for a year

Cons: Only works a year then does nothing but make noises. Over the past 10 years I have had about 10 printers of various makes and models. They seem to know how to engineer these as cheap as possible but yet get them to last a year, which happens to be the warranty period. Coincidence? I think not. I know I could spend more money and buy one that will last longer and can be serviced, but size is an issue and I dont need all the functionality of a printer that costs in the 4 digit range. But I would happily spend 3-4 times the cost of this if it would lasts a few years.

4 out of 5 eggsbe ware

Pros: Have the predecessor to this printer. The 8k models have issues with ink saturation. While it's a great printer and can make a beautiful print, know that if your photos ever come out dark that it's a driver issue. The 7k drivers more specifically the 7600 will work with this printer. Just download them from hp and install. Should fix any over saturation.

Cons: Saturation and driver issues. See solution in pros.

1 out of 5 eggsNot A Good Choice

Pros: Lots of features and used to be our go-to choice. Not any more!

Cons: Chip on ink carts and so far NONE of the remanufactured brands work, including the Office Depot version. Apparently limited to HP's official carts at twice to 3X the price of the remanufactured.

Other Thoughts: We do a lot of color printing and have worn out a series of HP Officejet Pros over the years and the current 8600 is the LAST ONE we will ever buy. Switching to Brother. We need the separate ink tanks this model offers, but this latest version has a chip on the cart and so far we cannot find a remanufactured cartridge that will work. We've wasted a fair chunk of time and money trying different brands, including Office Depot's remanufactured house brand and NOTHING works with this thing except the HP OEM brand.

HP just lost a customer . . . and they deserve to lose a lot more customers.

4 out of 5 eggsOnly 1.5 year life...

Pros: Print quality was great....fax was perfect, scan to printer worked on all 4 computers including all wireless devices, I.e. iPad and cell phones. I was very happy with this all in one, until it stopped working only a year and 4 months.

Cons: One and a half year after purchase (which I don't think is long enough) the printer stopped printing. I purchased new ink, did not help. Called HP support and all they suggested was using the on-screen print head cleaner, but that did not help. I would have given a perfect score, but since it seems this printer broke down almost exactly after warranty expired, I feel angry!

Other Thoughts: Called HP tech support and they were able to ship a refurbish printer for about $20$30' less than retail. Not sure or this was a good idea.....

3 out of 5 eggsCheaper elsewhere (even on sale)

Pros: Don't own this thing but I noticed it was far cheaper on other retailers.

Cons: inflated newegg pricetag for whatever reason.

Other Thoughts: Staples any basically every other retailer have this thing available for like half of what newegg is selling it for.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy

Pros: Works well.
Duplex is smooth.
Scanning is easy.

Cons: Wifi was difficult to set up. Now that its set up it works fine.

Other Thoughts: Does what we wanted it to, is easy to use. I was a little concerned as we have had a lot of problems with our HP printers at work.
