5 out of 5 eggsXonar D2 -- Worth the investment...

Pros: Sound quality definitely better than the onboard on my HP desktop computer.

Bass output is at least 30% greater with this card over my onboard on my 4.1 speakers.

My Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones, however, were pathetically weak in terms of Bass with the onboard sound that came on my computer's motherboard. The Xonar D2 PCI card made a world of difference/improvement and gives my headphones what seems like 10 times the Bass and WAY, WAY less distortion on the headphones when pushing the 30hz Equalizer band to +20 dbz.

In my opinion, the best sound can be achieved by bumping the 60hz and 120hz Equalizer bands DOWN to between -10 and -20 dbz and then bumping the 30hz UP to produce lots of low freq. bass, but this may not be the case with other speakers (I use Boston Acoustics 7800 4.1 speakers)...I also bump up the 8k and 16k slightly above the default...

The card has a very good build quality...thickness of board, materials used....

Cons: It took several attempts for the card to be detected by Windows Vista. However, I only encountered this problem the FIRST time installing the card. It installed without a hitch two times (I reinstalled drivers again after installing a clean Windows Vista, since it had become infested with bloatware/etc.)

No other cons that I can think of at the moment...

Other Thoughts: Running card on a Hewlett Packard...ATHLON X2 64 5000+, 500watt Antec Earthwatts power supply, 2gb RAM, Windows Vista, Samsung 400gb Hard Drive.......

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding sound card

Pros: Unbelievable sound quality in music, movies, and games. Very good SNR performance and ALT technology allows near-perfect recording of analog audio. The software has numerous options and tweaks. Easy to use control console with additional options and I/O.

Cons: I wish the preset DSP and Application buttons were customizable in the software control panel.

Other Thoughts: Had this card for over 3 years, along with Logitech Z-5500 speakers, and have been very satisfied with the sound fidelity and general capabilities of the card.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid card doe music, gaming, and recording.

Pros: This card is excellent. Very high fidelity, great quality. The LED indicators on the back are very cool (even though I never look back there.) For music, I believe it has improved the overall clarity of the sound coming out of my terrible speakers. I game, as well, and even on games such as League of Legends, the sound is very improved and very directional, no distortion or confusion, to games such as COD and CS:S where direction is very essential.
Now, for what I bought the card for.
I'm a home recorder and I must say this is where the card excels. Sound reproduction. I'm a drummer and have been trying to record myself for a while, but with my onboard soundcard everything just sounded like I was recording in a glass box underwater. The clarity, crispness, and cleanliness is just awesome. It really picks up the tone and feel of my drums (More so than I expected!) and not just the attack that I got before. This is a great card if you don't want to hit the 200, nothing beginner about

Cons: The pros outweigh the cons by far, but (with ANY piece of tech) there are a few cons.
First was all the extra programs it came with. Maybe I'm being a dummy by not installing them, but after the drivers I don't really need too much of the other stuff.
Second, was (and this was my fault, not the cards fault) it didn't really fit on my motherboard, so I had to jimmy it in and that made me really nervous.
Third, is my mic somehow is really quiet now. Even with my recording, I always have to turn the volume up. Not a huge issue, but an issue.

Other Thoughts: Look, I'm such a picky choosy person, but this card really does it for me. Great for music, gaming, and just sound reproduction over all. Movies sound awesome, games are intense, and my recordings sound superb. I trust Asus and they haven't let me down.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Card, great sound

Pros: Great sound, color-coded LED inputs make it easy to see what you are doing when making changes, easy installation. I am very happy with the sound both through my Monitor S2's and my Sennheiser HD250's. Music sounds great, as do movies.

The effects (although I prefer not to use) perform well.

Cons: When sound sources go silent, there is usually a little problem with some noise, but quickly fades.

I am not a fan of the enhanced settings (reverb, etc.), but not because they aren't good, just I prefer not to affect the sound. As I say above, they actually work really well.

Absolutely no technical support, as with all Asus products. I have several components from Asus, and all have worked great, luckily--but whenever I have had minor issues there is absolutely no help whatsoever, as well as a website I found cumbersome to join and navigate.

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, it's a gamble buying Asus mostly due to an apparent lack of support. So far I have not had any reason to stop purchasing products from them because of the quality of the products, but that may change once something fails.

5 out of 5 eggsSimply AMAZING!

Pros: I upgraded my on-board ASUS M4A78 PRO audio to this sound card and it is amazing! Worth the buy. I am a big time audio fanatic and I gave it a test run with an audio clip of a live Brass horn line ensemble, playing some pretty loud chord progressions and I was amazed at all the different tones it picked up and a nice warmth to the sound. Nice EQ as well, and good options to adjust the sound to just how you want to hear it.

Cons: It take a small bit of playing with the EQ to get the most out of this card, it wasn't straight of the box sounding 100%. I don't think this is really a con though just a little thought so your not disappointed thinking it will be everything you thought out of the box. Once you get it right it wont disappoint.

5 out of 5 eggshuge difference

Pros: this card is unbelievable if you have the right sound system. i have mine set on 7.1 virtual and dts neo pc and i'm hearing sounds on songs that i have never heard before. it really does bring your sound system to life.

Cons: the software is pretty generic. but it works well enough.

Other Thoughts: i probably shouldn't have spend this much on it.

5 out of 5 eggsGood, love it. Blasting music all day.

Pros: UNBELIEVABLE sound comes from this card. I am an audiophile and am very satisfied with the sound for the price.
if you're here even pondering this card buy it.

Cons: The sound is a bit hollow at first but takes a little tinkering, I suppose that's not really a con.

Other Thoughts: Twincest is not ok.

2 out of 5 eggsGoing back to my X-Fi

Pros: Good reviews from everyone. Solid design and components. Very much built for the audiophile. The latest drivers from the ASUS support website installed perfectly on Windows 7 32-bit. Better than on-board sound.

Cons: Better than on-board but not the best. Sound is hollow and lifeless. Software tools are limited. EQ is the only tool available to improve music but it isn't enough. Automatic application of surround-sound techniques that I do not want.

Other Thoughts: I bought this after reading about the inferior OpAmps used in my X-Fi Extreme Music. Decided to give this a try. After a few days of playing with the software I just could not get music to sound the way it did on my X-Fi. I miss the Crystalizer software of my X-Fi. It makes a huge improvement to the size and breadth of music. Tight low-freq sounds and bright highs. I am returning this and going back to my X-Fi.

5 out of 5 eggsbeats the heck out of previous card

Pros: sounds perfect. not much else I can say.

Cons: I didn't get one until now?

Other Thoughts: previously had an x-fi platinum, crackled and hissed all the time, faily win7 drivers + aging card lead to a lot of crashing apps for anything with sound. all of those problems are now gone.

5 out of 5 eggsBest sound Ive ever heard period

Pros: First of all I upgraded to this card from an x-fi extreme music, which sounded pretty good but it simply cannot compete, this is in a totally different class! Ive had numerous good quality stereo's but nothing comes close. the detail in music is unbelievable.
nice headphones are a must if you really want to hear the difference.

Cons: no cons unless your running windows 7, from what I hear there are some driver issues, I'm still running vista 32, until service pack 1 is released for 7.

Other Thoughts: Dolby headphones sound way better than any x-fi effects eax etc,
no performance hits in games that Ive noticed.
Keep in mind high quality speakers or headphones are required to hear the true potential of this card.
