Excellent sound quality
- Pros: Sound quality is surprisingly good
- Cons: None so far.
- Other Thoughts: Just got this card, so can't comment on reliability.
I have the Logitech 2300 speakers (2.1) and listen to a lot of music on my PC. This is my third PCI sound card and I’ve used the onboard audio before that. So far the Xonar has the best audio quality of all four cards that I’ve used. It produces clear and rich sound that does not get tiring after prolonged listening. A word of warning – as other posters have said, tweak your settings immediacy after installing the card in order to get the best of this card.
Happy ears
- Pros: The sound from this card is amazing, but you would not knowing by just installing the card and firing up your favorite music player. To get the best experience you will want to tweak your sound using the included software. I am using a z-5300e 5.1 setup that still delivers despite it's age.
This card has made it that much better. My last card was an 4udigy ZS-2 that developed an extreme case of popping and crackling. When I built a new system, the issue continued so I chucked that card and used the onboard audio for a few months.
This card certainly blows away the onboard audio (crummy IDT which offers very little customization) but it also blows away the old ZS-2. It is not mentioned anywhere, but the card uses the C-Media Oxygen processor, which is the top of the line C-Media product.
Besides the processor, Asus also uses a glossed over version of C-Media's Xear 3D as the software interface for the card. And this is not a bad thing at all. See more in Other Thoughts ->
- Cons: As mentioned by others here, the documentation is quite sparse. Unless you knew that the card offered front panel audio connections, you would not learn it from the manual.
Speaking of front panel audio, I have yet to get mine working. I am sure i will after some research, though. And I am not taking off any eggs for these cons because the card sounds amazing and the included software is incredibly useful.
- Other Thoughts: Xear 3D is the best interface I have used for tweaking the surround sound field. And the additions made by Asus improve it even further. The customization it offers is top notch. If you're using 5.1, make sure to enable the 7.1 Virtual Speaker Shifter. It does an excellent job of fooling the ear into believing you are listening to 7.1.
I agonized for weeks over which sound card to get. I had hesitations about buying (as well as about not buying) another Cr3a7ive card. I am glad I went with Asus. This card gives me happy ears :)
Best Buy!
- Pros: 24 bit sound. 7.1 channels, works with Windows 7 after driver install. Very cheap card considering what power it comes with.
- Cons: I didn't find out about this card earlier.
- Other Thoughts: Tested using Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 with powered sub and then with Grado SR-80i headphones. Through line-in connected Technics SL-B2 turntable, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and 2. Noticed incredible boost in sound quality compared old Sound Blaster Audigy 2. All my mp3s are cbr320 and I noticed they sound alot cleaner than before.
