5 out of 5 eggsWorks well under linux

Pros: Worked immediately when I plugged it into a Dell M3800 running Mint Linux. Had to select it as the output sound card, as one would expect in a machine with multiple sound cards. No drivers required, no command line stuff. It. Just. Worked.

Cons: The volume adjustment provided by linux goes from nothing to kinda-loud without any steps in between. I don't know if that's the device or linux, so I didn't deduct any eggs.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing USB Sound Card

Pros: Decent sound quality @ 46kHz. DAC is asus ua100. This uses the Texas Instruments DirectPath DRV601 for headphone amplifier. Built in charge pump for negative voltage; uses direct coupling instead of capacitive Quite loud for a 5v@500mA power supply (USB) . Much louder than my Xonar DGX "Gaming headphone amplifier"(which has +-12v available.

Cons: DRV601 is rated at >= 100ohm output impedence. Asus is using this chip out of spec. Might not last forever.
Housing is rediculously large for the size of the board and kind of ugly. the 2 blue leds are pointless and just waste a few mA.

Other Thoughts: Overall a good buy at under $40. Works well with my crossfade M-100. Can put a concert on my head and take it with my laptop.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Bought this to provide a working mic port for a laptop with a broken port. Not only does the mic port work great, but the sound is stellar as well. Using it with a Logitech G230 headset.

Cons: n/a

Other Thoughts: Windows 7 doesn't default to the Xonar U3 for sound and microphone usage after unplugging it and then plugging it back in. Not really a problem, just minor a nuisance.

3 out of 5 eggsYou get what you pay for.

Pros: It works and gives great quality sound controls.Great alternative if you have a mediocre soundcard already and want a little bit of a boost. I am currently using a laptop and bought the card just for that. Was satisfied with what I got out of for the time it lasted.

Cons: It was either a faulty product or just got worn out too fast? I tried configuring and diagnosing the problem myself and got nothing about why it would just die out on me. I had it plugged in at all times but nothing was touching it to hinder the movement at all. The lights on it still light up but next to no sound at all through my Gamecom headset.

Other Thoughts: I won't be purchasing an USB soundcard anymore after this experience.

5 out of 5 eggsFeel the music

Pros: Sound Quality high, its own equalizer software, it has spdif attachment, indicator light isn't bright to annoy a person trying to sleep and very very simple to set and forget.

Cons: Its probably me, but when I do voice or voip communications people sound like an all mighty being. I am sure this isn't the device its probably me not putting the correct setting on the equalizer software.

Other Thoughts: These usb sound cards are not necessary just to have sound, but if you need to separate sound like video games and voip communications(you can do music if you want but most people already have awesome speakers and sound cards). This is the best one for your buck as for sound quality and simple to use.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent with reasonable expectations

Pros: Very easy to install and setup
Solid sound for a USB card
Reasonable price
Flexible uses
Built in headphone amp

Cons: Given what it is and the limitations of a small USB sound card - none.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this after the front audio jack on my full tower Cooler Master case failed. its so large I really didn't want to deal with the hassle of reaching around my desk to plug my headphones in (since I use them on several devices). The U3 solved the problem perfectly allowing me to use them on a front USB port. The sound quality is pretty good - comparable to the Realtek ALC892 chipset on my motherboard. I don't use the Dolby headphone settings - I prefer just the stock 2 channel sound with tweaking on the equalizer for my games (but you do have the option). The headphone amp is effective - I have to keep it on medium, so there's definitely a little headroom for better quality headphones with higher impedance. For $30 after rebate it definitely fit the bill for me and the problem I had with my case.

5 out of 5 eggsBest USB sound cars

Pros: Very best sound card you can get if you need an external one. Good software and plug n play. No trouble at all setting it up.

Cons: Wish it had optical audio but in the pics it clearly doesn't show it has one, just wish it did. But for that price you can't complain at all.

Other Thoughts: Packaging is dope.

5 out of 5 eggsVery cool sound card!!

Pros: Takes away any internal noises from my laptop's internal sound card. Love it cause it's small and light and yet comes with a great equalizer and sound effects software. I'm very happy with this device, would recommend to anyone!

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Be sure to right-click your volume icon and select this device as your default playback device! I was puzzled as to why this wouldn't work until I figured it out, duh...

5 out of 5 eggsSimply the best USB sound card in its class

Pros: Superb sound quality across the range
Dolby Headphone - done right
Dolby Pro-Logic IIx for stereo/5.1 to 7.1 upmixing.
USB like size, very easy on the table - no clutter.
Dolby Digital Live real-time encoding over TOSlink Optical out
Outstanding surround sound with Dolby headphone in 7.1 playing games/movies (more on this below)

The flat non-DSP effects sound of this card is warm to neutral depending on your headset. And with equalizer tweaks it sounds great on highs and perfect in the lows. Bass is not over powering yet just at the right level. Even bass freaks will be happy with its bass, granted the equalizer can give out more bass if needed. The mids were also great. I trust my ears, not the RMAA analyzer.

Great Stereo sound, thats all fine. What about surround sound? This is where this little gizzmo truly shines. The surround is not muffled or hollow sounding, its just perfect and the best part is that equalizer settings can tweak the feel even more. Positional audio is

Cons: None really, for the ultra small size this thing is simply amazing.

More on the Surround sound since there is a 1000 word limit on each section.

I tested the THX Tru Surround on the X-Fi 5.1 pro, Sharkoon's own SCU hardware solution and the Xonar U3 in game and movies.

In games they all sound great, but Xonar U3 sounded more natural with positional accuracy so good that you can really tell the various angles from where the sound is coming from. Proper audio cues. Sharkoon SCU was good in positional audio but there is something about the over all sound that makes it more like a small sound stage, only slight though. THX was accurate as Xonar U3 in positional cues but the sound quality was no better than the Sharkoon SCU.

In movies the THX Tru Surround was terrible becuase its using only two channels, switching it to 5.1 in windows panel made sounds just getting lost over non-existent channels. Sharkoon is digital input so no such troubles. Xonar works fine as 7.1 in windows

Other Thoughts: I bought this from another place since newegg didnt have this in stock at the time. I paid 20 USD more to get it but even then its great investment. So newegg's price is a steal.

A little background into why I needed a USB sound card anyway. I got this Sharkoon X-tatic SR surround sound headset and then remembered my M18X alienware will not output a 5.1 digital signal over SPDIF. Its just Stereo PCM. TBH I should have given it more thought before buying the headset. But the believe me the headset was very good and worth the investment. So I got the Creative X-Fi 5.1 Pro USB

The X-Fi 5.1 Pro USB was good on sound quality and did what I wanted which was optical out with Dolby Digital live encoding over TOSlink optical. Worked fine with the Sharkoon's SCU sound box with optical input feed, Dolby headphone surround sound through the Sharkoon's SCU sounded great.

But getting the Xonar U3 made the X-Fi and the sharkoon's SCU redundant, it just has a better Dolby Headphone implement
