Great solution for web hosting.
- Pros: Great platform for web hosting. Lower cost than the 2003 version was.
- Cons: None to speak of.
- Other Thoughts: At this price point, it's definitely worth it over the time it takes to get LAMP setup and locked down. I would suggest using FileZilla server over the built in FTP server, as it's more configurable, and the accounts don't tie into windows accounts. As to the previous comment on a mail server, you can use SmarterMail with Windows Web Server... I've done it with 2003, and am pretty sure it will work with 2008 as well.
Windows Web 2008 Rocks!
- Pros: Includes the very awesome IIS7 (http://iis.net) Web server with full support for ASP, ASP.NET, and PHP. Also allows you to install SharePoint and Windows Media Server. IIS7 has many new features including FastCGI for world-class PHP support, very powerful extensibility for .NET with integrated pipeline, a new administration tool that allows for delegated administration, with lots of new add-on features coming out on http://iis.net/.
- Cons: Must install hotfix before attempting to install SQL server. See http://iis.net for information on where to get patch.
- Other Thoughts: This version of Windows supports the same hardware as standard server up to 4 CPUs and 32GB of RAM (64bit). It also allows you to install any version of SQL server to be used locally for Web applications.
Awesome Product
- Pros: It has the new IIS 7.0 which I am used to since I was hosting websites in vista. The interface is so much better than previous versions. It came with 32bit and 64bit on the disc, which is nice for more memory compatibility.
- Cons: The install was not the smoothest because most dell servers are shipping with openManage CD's with no windows 2008 compatiability. So I had to download a 3.5 gig iso that took forever because it kept timing out. Not really a con, but IIS does have a little bit of a learning vurve if you are used to IIS 6.0.
- Other Thoughts: Great product if you are wanting to host your own websites or an FTP site. If your wanting to setup a domain or run your own mail server this product will not work for that.
