5 out of 5 eggsWorth Every Penny

Pros: Everything about it is a 'pro' - simple installation, simple implementation, simple backups, simple network file sharing, and simple whole-box restores. Just find an old box, drop this onto it, and your life gets easier. Even if you don't take advantage of the network/remote acces features, eventually EVERYBODY has to restore a PC, and this makes it so simple - insert a CD, select the drive to restore, and couple hours later, your PC is back to the land of the living. Makes it much easier to forgive yourself after you get careless and foul something up.

Cons: None, really, but the storage assimilation on the host box may throw people if they aren't prepared. Read the documentation and you'll get it.

Other Thoughts: I'm the 'computer guy' for my friends & family, which means I've spent many a ruined weekend being a nice guy to people who foul up computers as a bodily function, and never, ever have the source media for a restore. I'm strongly considering buying a select few of them WHS for Christmas, just to save myself some hassle. If the price drops any further, I may buy it for everyone I know!

5 out of 5 eggsSaved the Day!

Pros: Very easy to set up, and low maintenance. Does automatic backups, and reminder to update anit-virus defs. I access the server from work quite often.

Cons: I wish I had the actual hp home server. I built mine from spare parts after I purchased the software, but it works great. No cons.

Other Thoughts: Today my MB crashed on one of the PCs in my home server network. I replaced the MB and HD, but went from IDE to SATA. I restored the PC from a backup on the home server with no problems. Home server saves the day! Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 eggsAn elegant solution

Pros: Requires very little babysitting
Easy to set up

Cons: Limited in what you can do out of the box, but there are plenty of add-ins available to get it to do what you want.

Other Thoughts: After my last computer upgrade, my older machine was refitted into a WHS, just needed to slap a cheapy video card in for the OS install. It's backing up two computers nightly and feeding music and videos to my Sonos Zoneplayer and PS3, which is all I need for it to do. I haven't suffered any computer failures yet, so no advice yet on system recovery.

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing saved my life

Pros: this thing backs up my 4 computers every night. I just sort of forget it. I lost a hard drive with 7 years of pictures of it...WHS restored a new hard drive and everthing worked absolutly perfect. Lost a hrd drive on my laptop and just restored onto a new HD and worked perfect.

Cons: has issues (but works fine) with 64 bit OS

Other Thoughts: I love this thing and will never be without it! I built my own box and it works perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsAnyone with more than one computer should own this

Pros: Media Streaming
Storage
Personal Website
AUTOMATIC BACKUP OF YOUR COMPUTERS!!!
Network monitoring for viruses or other potential problems

Cons: Many functions of Windows Server 2003 hidden

Other Thoughts: I honestly believe this is one of the better purchases I've made. I didn't realize the full beauty of this until I purchased it. I mainly bought it so I could put up a home website that I could hit from various places and maybe stream some media around the house. What I didn't know about was the automatic backups of any computers set up to interface with WHS. I've always worried about losing data on my various computers in the house (I have 3) and this takes those worries away - it will automatically do a differential backup of each of my computers every night as long as I put them in sleep mode or leave them on. Now, if one of my computers crashes, I have backups of all the files. It's a thing of beauty. Throw in the network monitoring and various other options, and it's a no brainer - this is a fantastic piece of software - for $100, I think it may be one of the biggest bargains on the market.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Better than that dinosaur W2k your using now.
Better price than a full copy of 2003 Server.

Cons: No major cons, but see below:

Other Thoughts: I hate to complain, because this is just a tweaked version of 2003 server for a much lower price. It's fine for average home user that just needs a file server or something like that.

But, the remote console just feels gimmicky. In fact, I don't use any of the selling points for this OS. I don't need the data backup. I don't need the media server. I don't want to install anything on a client to manage my server. I guess most people that buy this are newbs, so that's who Microsoft is targeting.

I just use it as a normal server OS via Terminal Services. It complains at first about how your going to break the remote console by interacting directly with the desktop, but after that it works just like normal.

For devices, I just used 2003 Server drivers. I came across a printer that didn't have a 2003 driver and the XP driver didn't work. There's no built in driver either. Kind of a bummer since I didn't want to buy a printer yet. I guess that's just as much HP's fault.

5 out of 5 eggsrock on

Pros: I love home server and I'm not one to enjoy operating systems al that much.. but when it comes to having ALL of your systems backed up, ALL of your files in one location and the ability to share your tv recordings with the other systemks in the house,, of course I loved it

Cons: not many good "plugins" for the console,

Other Thoughts: if microsoft would use this movement towards there other os's they might actually get me to buy another

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with Win7

Pros: Is a good solution to backups and restores (see Cons) as it is easy to set up and use.

Cons: Does not seem to work with my installation of Win7 (32 bit) in the sense that it is impossible to open or view a backup. All I get (along with many other people) is an error message at 81% done, "Cannot Mount Backup" when I try and open a backup. This seems to be a common problem as there are many postings with this problem with no solution. A backup product that does not let you restore is basically useless.

Other Thoughts: They seem to be dropping support for this product as they are coming out with a new home server based on Server 2008. As mentioned, there is no real suggestions supplied to get around the 81% problem and no help on the support web site. You can pay $79 per incident for paid support, but that more or less doubles the cost of the product and from what I can see, does not guarantee any solution, just throwing good money after bad.

5 out of 5 eggsGood home server OS

Pros: Overall this is a very user-friendly system. Installed easily on an old HP with 2.6GHz P4/600MB RAM/620GB IDE storage (WHS sees 580GB). Using it as a the primary file storage body for entire home network (WinXP desktop, Win7 laptop, and data from friend/family computers). Also using it as print spooler for Samsung SCX-4600. Added a gigabit NIC without problem to use with Airlink101 AR690W router.

Cons: Not much, but some high-tech people surely would want more room in configurations. For example, you can't choose to backup Computer 1 and Computer 2 between different times. Wake On LAN would be nice as a factory-installed option, but that's what add-ons are for. Not entirely convinced with Remote Control through console, so I keep a head on it (via manual KVM switch).

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very pleased with WHS. It shares things in a logical manner, you can setup the basics quite easily, and Microsoft provides easy web access to files on the system. Newegg is the best.
