1 out of 5 eggsDON'T BUY THIS DEFECTIVE GARBAGE!!!

Pros: The worthless (fill in the blank)s that wrote this program probably married fat-N-ugly engineering chicks.

Cons: The worthless garbage wouldn't even install. It did manage to thoroughly screw up my PC's drivers. My monitor is all messed up, now. Watching movies isn't possible, either. Playback gets all garbles. I've no idea how to fix this, now...

Other Thoughts: After getting the run around from a Newegg customer service rep. I'm strongly thinking of NEVER buying anything from this site, ever again. They HAD to have known the product is defective by now. It's nothing short of theft to sell something they know won't work, & will cause damage. If they don't make this right. They can drop dead. I'll never buy a thing here again. Neither will anyone I talk to about it...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget video editing

Pros: • Inexpensive video editing
• More powerful than the price would lead one to believe
• Short learning curve for the basics
• Skills learned will transition well to pro version

I'm not much of a fan of Sony, as a corporation. I don't care for some of their prior antics, as such I gave some of the competitors a try before I settled on purchasing Vegas Movie Studio. I went in with apprehension, but I have to admit that I've really grown to love the heck out of this software package. This branch of Sony really deserves kudos for making a reasonably-priced piece of kick-a** software.

VMS doesn't set out to treat you like a kid or a grandma, and yet the ease of routine editing tasks belies the true power you have at your fingertips. It also has a great feature which really helped me learn the interface quickly. The help files have the option to guide you through basic actions step by step..with your own source files! That feature beats the hell out of any tutorial.

Cons: It would be pretty cool if Vegas Movie Studio made better use out of the GPU, like the newer versions of Vegas Pro, especially for AVCHD live previewing multiple video streams at full resolution. Even though MVS is generally resource efficient, if you have two or three HD streams going at once it can slow down, making one do many preview renders to better get the feel of the action going on.

But, I understand that they have to differentiate between their $600 dollar pro-grade product, and their sub $100 dollar product. Someday I'll pony up for Vegas Pro.

No big complaints otherwise.

Other Thoughts: Unlike all of the others comparable products I tried, Sony's demo version is basically the full version, unlocked for 30 days. You can even make a final product, no watermarks on exports, that level of faith in the product helped seal the deal for me.

My primary interest was in video editing for YouTube videos, but it also comes with DVD / Blue Ray authoring and a sound editing program. I haven't made a great deal of use of these, but they seem to be quality pieces of software in their own right.

One awesome feature of the program is that it keeps track of the file names of the media you use in your projects. Any media opened is basically like a link or pointer to that file, so if you move your source files, it will recognize that some are missing, and give you the option to search your drives for those files. Any work you did automatically apply to the files you choose. This helped me easily re-open projects which I had on a computer that died. Do avoid file name duplication!

1 out of 5 eggsBeware!

Pros: Probably many, too bad I will never find out... Neweggs Customer Service is top notch & will accept my return. Just real disappointed in Sony is all!

Cons: Will not install on my Desktop. Does install on my laptop. Too bad I don't have a Blu-Ray burner in my laptop!!!

Other Thoughts: Got a state of the art desktop running Win7-64... Keep getting an apphang error on install. Sez: "Sony Windows installer preloader has stopped working"... Sony techs are all stumped. Spent hours on the phone with them. Has been referred to Sony's Development team to try to figure out. Meanwhile I have a new burner I cannot use because I have no authoring software. I Googled the error message and voila! There are lots of folks having the same problem! I hope you have better luck!

5 out of 5 eggsSony ROCKS!!!

Pros: I tried this suite against Adobe's Affter Effects, which seems to be the industry standard. I'm making CGI episodic movies and I found this suite to be a lot easier to work with and it actually loads and uses sll of the file formats that I use (unlike AE). I haven't written/recorded my score yet, so I have yet to try the Sound Forge, but I like the features it has. Now that I actually have this purchased product - rather than the demo version (download at sony.com) I'll be able to check out the tutorial videos and learn DVD architect - which is also pretty easy to learn - but robust - so you can just keep on learning. I like that!

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The software itself includes tutorials that you can turn on whenever you want - they place informative "How-To's" around the interface with arrows and highlights to direct you to learn the subject you chose. It's very quick, very informative, very professionally done!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Editing Features & DVD Menu Making, But A Bug & Slow Encoding

Pros: - This Vegas Movie Studio, Corel VideoStudio Pro x4 Ultimate and Adobe Premiere Elements are definitely the top notch consumer editing softwares for offering the most editing features.
- The included DVD Architect, a DVD/Blu-ray authoring program, also offers more flexibility in menu making than most of the other DVD authoring softwares that come built into editing programs do.
- GPU acceleration (NVidia CUDA) in H264 encoding

Cons: - The negative side of having the tons of features is that there's a quite bit of a learning curve.
- A bug - video and audio to go out of synch when I import 720p mpeg footage (TV show recordings). --> a major reason for the 1 egg deduction
- No GPU acceleration for mpeg encoding
- Not resource greedy, this program doesn't use up all CPU power there is in encoding. The encode speed is definitely slower than that that you can get with for instance Cyberlink Power Director.

Other Thoughts: Not necessarily a collection of all the best features I have seen in various consumer level softwares. The bug in 720p handling is really unfortunate. The encoding speed is not its strength, not the worst I have seen, just not on the faster side of the spectrum. But I believe this is a great software for those who are looking for versatility in editing and DVD/Blu-ray menu making.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Much easier to use than a competing product that I've had for about seven months. Prettty intuitive user interface. Lots of choices for transitions. Plenty of capabilities for editing audio and video.

Cons: Still not fully 64 bit, but neither is the competition.

3 out of 5 eggsupgrade to vegas 11

Pros: I am using my sony Vegas Movie Studio for the last two years and it is very good software for the price and has good feature.
I am looking in to upgrading the Vegas Movie Studio to the latest release. but the sony VMS still run at the 32bit mode and it can not utilize all the hardware resources available. it take long time to render HD contents at full HD resolution.

Cons: there is no 64bit support to utilize all memory and speed up video rendering.
