Story

Based on a novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher's universe and characters have exceptional credibility, authority and cohesiveness. In this harsh fantasy world, while moral good exists, the protagonist will often only have a choice between two evils, deciding on the path which he regards as the lesser of the two.

The story begins with Geralt reappearing after being feared dead. He is found unconscious and dazed, with only a vague recollection of past events. The whole world does not revolve just around Geralt - it's basically a living world of which Geralt is only a part, despite his influence in its ultimate fate.

NPCs will lead their lives independently of the protagonist, yet upon interaction they can be influenced by and react to the Witcher's actions. Players unfamiliar with Sapkowski's works will be able to gradually immerse themselves in this fantasy realm.

The Witcher features an innovative, time delayed decision-consequence system, prodding players to make their decisions seriously and with challenging thought.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing RPG

Pros: A great RPG that is worth playing. I would recommend this to any true RPG lovers.

Cons: Older game, and the combat takes a bit of time to get used to. It does however stand out over many other RPGs.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Game

Pros: Very good Game

Enhanced edition

Game Guide

Cons: The Details for what the game includes are wrong and are a bit sketchy.

The details note an added short story and map of the world. The short story is only availble in Euro countries and is not in the N.A Enhanced Edition Set. While the map is supposed to be in the N.A set.

Both of those 'promised' features are not included. I'm guessing the manufacturer removed the maps as they ran out of them(why keep printing a 5 year old map?)

I am not deducting a star but this was an over sight.

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the best games I have played

Pros: Great story, great characters and immersive game world, absolutely superb soundtrack. Kudos to ProjektRed for continuing to support and enhance this game ... for removing DRM ... and for releasing enhanced content free of charge!
I have been gaming since the 1980's--and this has become one of my all-time favorites.

Cons: Combat takes a little getting used to, for those inured to the traditional approaches ... for the first couple hours on my first playthrough, I wasn't sure I liked it.

Other Thoughts: If you haven't played TW, buy it now! Not mentioning any names, but it puts even more recent titles by bigger houses to shame.
Really looking forward to the future release of TW2!

5 out of 5 eggsWonderful RPG! Excellent international forum

Pros: Thoughtful storyline, fairly easy learning curve which i liked as it was 1st game and I fell in love w/it and looked fw to playing nitely. Geralt of Rivia is The Witcher who can be played a few ways: noble, neutral, evil. You can play game at least 3x to get varied endings and more to just gain xp and fun. Tons of quests in 5 Acts + Sidequests equal months of playing, took me 6 mos as im an old bird w/limited time-2-3 hrs, 3x wk, LOL. ProjektRed is dedicated to fans and owners of the game too, unlike most games where you pay $50 for 2nd version, 3rd version, etc. You get free upgrades ea time they put out a new version. I bought the original Witcher in 2007, got the free upgrade..to Witcher Enhanced and enjoyed that so much I bought another version from UK Unsensored. I would recommend the Witcher Enhanced Directors Cut which doesnt censor the artistic cards that come up on splash screen when he meets females for romantic interludes (if chosen). International forum is outstanding

Cons: Cant think of many...my 2007 version game grafix in some characters needed better rendering. In the free upgrade i received, characters def looked better, more detail, Geralts hair was flowing, monsters too. Im picky so no eggs off there. The story line is what i go for and this is where the game shines. For more modern women and I count myself as one, theres some chauvenism but to their credit, Geralt doesnt act this way unless you direct him to. A powerful female Wizard and Witch will be allies but then they put her in fishnet tights in addition to her leather vests which all wear...stuff like that. Suppose you could say in medieval times this would be true to custom-however referring to her as Babe wouldnt-lets face it, we're still lite yrs away from being treated equal. Adolescents will love of course...the S*x Cards too, uncensored, maybe more than some need but again, adolescents will love...some save and print out. I see them boast on the forum at times, LOL.

Other Thoughts: Im going to purchase DragonAge eventually as from what im seeing adults like this RPG and review well. Ive been playing Batman of Arkham Asylum too and grafix are excellent its both RPG/Action oriented but much less thought involved which i miss. I dont enjoy simple fighting and shooting, its too repetitive and often frustrating as I just get shot dead, over and over...still scratching head why kids kinda like it, suppose once you can survive, it could be fun. Bioshock2 looks interesting too. I own several games which seem popular w/great grafix: FarCry2, Batman, COD WAW, Hellgate London (older), Elderscrolls IV: Oblivion, Mass Effect, etc. Its an eclectic collection so far..experimenting. Ive found some go overboard w/weapons, upgrades, strategy to the point you cannot enjoy and you must simply be unemployed and having a mom take care of you to master, LOL. Still its fun to try...devs excellent hand-eye coordination, keyboard skills, betters your brains abilities too. Escape...

5 out of 5 eggsRecommended

Pros: Great, engrossing world. Good and evil are not cut and dry as in most other RPGs on the market, which makes for a refreshing change.

Cons: I though the ending was weak. Occasional crash.

Other Thoughts: For mature audiences, has some adult themes.

5 out of 5 eggsFun Game

Pros: A very fun game. Play at your own pace

Cons: Slight learning curve.

Other Thoughts: I have played through this game twice. It was very enjoyable. Take the time to read the sub menus about the characters you meet. Complete all side quest before going to the next chapter. Save often.

5 out of 5 eggsI'm hooked!

Pros: Highly immersive, very good graphics, engaging storyline, adult themed. This is the first RPG that has held my attention for more than an hour or two.

Cons: Not exactly free roam, repetitive npc's.

Other Thoughts: It's not perfect, but it is the most engaging game I've played in quite a while. I usually get bored quickly, but not with this one. To the reviewer below who says "you can tell this is a console game", get a grip...this was a pc only title.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Game; I wish for more like it.

Pros: A great RPG; do what you want and reap what you sow.

Sophisticated/mature storyline with plenty of mouse clicking and eye candy. Unfortunately you don't obtain the best gear until the end ofthe game, but if it were available at the start the game would be entirely too easy.

Cons: A few major bugs (random crashes), but still a very enjoyable experience.

Other Thoughts: I'm thinking of playing it again to see what the differences are between playing it entirely good/bad/indifferent. That and waste time while waiting for the next Diablo and Bio Ware's Dragon Age: Origins.

I hope the developers eventually put out a sequel or prequel.

1 out of 5 eggsSimply awful

Pros: None

Cons: Way, way too many cut scenes. And when one is done you're thrown immediately into a battle. So do you save while bad guys are hacking away at you ? If you don't, and die, then you'll have to sit through the cut scene all over again, and again, and again. And there's no way to skip the cut scene.

What's with no first person point-of-view ? This was one really nice thing about Morrwind and Oblivion. As you have no party members to control I just can't understand the omission.

Like making potions ? Going here and there for ingredients with a teeny tiny inventory ? Then you'll love THIS game.

This game is clearly made for console gamers. I'm surprised there aren't checkpoint saves.

Other Thoughts: Play Morrowind or Oblivion (or even Baldur's Gate) if you want to see how a decent RPGis done. This is one for the console crowd. Forget it - you'll feel better in the morning.
