1 out of 5 eggsBEWARE! This is Windows 8.1 UPDATER NOT 8.1 ITSELF

Pros: None - as delivered by Newegg this is useless if you want to install to a new PC, Mac hardware or virtual machine UNLESS you have a Windows 7 or higher machine handy to supposedly make an ISO.

Cons: Your download will be Windows 8.1 UPDATER and not the full version of Windows. You are supposed to be able to make an ISO IF you have a Win 7+ machine but I have not been able to test making ISO as I do not have a compatible Windows machine. THIS IS NOT A FULL PRODUCT THAT YOU WILL DOWNLOAD,

Other Thoughts: I have complained to Newegg about this. I have paid for a product that I cannot receive. Nowhere on this product listing does it state the conditions for receiving the file and then getting the product. In my opinion it is their responsibility to deliver what I have paid for in good faith - A FULL VERSION OF WINDOWS 8.1. If there is a satisfactory resolution I will update this review.

1 out of 5 eggsI am not buying this

Pros: Mostly none, it does have a "classic desktop" but these blocks are stupidly big compared to desktop icons.

Cons: the mouse function of disappearing I have tried on the preview version. Nothing is more annoying as to have the PC's primary operating tool, the mouse, fooled with.

Other Thoughts: Microsoft needs to be nationalized as it is so big it is almost a public utility in that computer users. Product key experations are just planned obsolescence and Microsoft could have fixed that, with a self registry of your motherboard, hardrive IP address and that kind of thing.

4 out of 5 eggsUN Necessary

Pros: Boots very fast (that may have something to do with the killer machine I just built for it though...;)
seems responsive. Has a traditional Windows desktop as the default upon boot.

Cons: Everything Windows has ever had is still there, just rearranged and hidden in a bizarre new maze of tricky windows gimmicks.

Other Thoughts: The search bar is your best friend in Windows 8.1, but you need to either go to the tiles start page to see it or know to move your mouse to a super-secret location on the desktop to make it miraculously pop up along with a few other buttons including the very odd version of the start button that does not have right click functionality of the 'actual' start button. The control panel can be accessed several different ways and it's the same old control panel, but even the easiest way to get to it (the super-secret auto-hide button bar on the right side of the desktop) is tedious when you're used to everything being right at the Start button, which now does something completely different. The "settings" are accessed with an icon that looks like a gear but depending on where you find that gear the links within the settings will be scrambled around. i.e. from the super-secret button bar on the desktop, the settings window shows Control Panel at the very top, but if you open settings from the start tiles page, control panel is at the very bottom. The whole redesign seems totally unnecessary and appears to be little more than a failed attempt to mimic an iPad. Sound familiar? It's 1994 all over again, only this time the GUI is a chaotic mess. The only reason to get Windows 8.1 is to take advantage of modern hardware and software that is not supported (deliberately) in Windows 7.

5 out of 5 eggsWindows 8.1 Download

Pros: Loaded the Windows 8.1 to memory stick and loaded onto a operating system-less laptop with no issue.

Cons: Took a couple of days to get the download, but it was stated that this could happen before the purchase.

1 out of 5 eggsRequires Windows 7 to Download

Pros: If you can somehow access a machine running Windows 7, you can eventually get what you think that you're buying

Cons: This download isn't an installable copy of Windows 8. It's an executable that can only be run on Windows 7, runs a downloader, and can eventually produce a bootable image. This isn't mentioned anywhere on this site, and I couldn't find it on Microsoft's, either.

Other Thoughts: It's hard not to feel deceived by this product, and if that's not bad enough, there are no refunds. Use Linux.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost there

Pros: Easy install. Has both 32 bit and 64 bit installation.

Cons: No option to choose between 32 and 64 bit without a workaround. (Installing 64 bit Windows 7, then reinstalling) It will automatically install the current one you are using. Interface is built for tablets, so a traditional mouse and keyboard would take some getting used to. Also wish there was a way to turn off on screen displays such as the volume bar.

Other Thoughts: Definitely a slight learning curve moving from 7 to 8. The start menu has been replaced with tiles that would be more suited towards tablet users.

3 out of 5 eggsReasonably good

Pros: - Fast. Boots fast and runs faster than windows 7
- Driver support. I have a 2 year old cheap dell laptop. It was hard to find drivers for windows 7 on dell's website for some reason (it's probably a "special model"). Windows 8 installed without any problems and without any need for me to search for and install drivers. All hardware works perfectly.

Cons: - Too expensive.
- User interface is lacking. It feels much more like a Mac OS now; with addition of a bulky metro interface. I think the traditional start button menu with all the options it came with added a unique and a useful set of features to the previous versions of Windows.

Other Thoughts: I have a feeling that the Dell laptop I mentioned was the last PC/Windows device that I have purchased. I also have a gaming PC that I built, which should last a few more years. But, for the next computing device I'll look at Google and Apple. Mac OS X is now free to upgrade, and in my opinion provides a superior user interface to Windows 8 for non touch enabled devices. I'd go with android for a touch enabled gadget (based on my experience with an iPad and an android phone).

1 out of 5 eggsMicrosoft is Worthless

Pros: Fast boot time.

Cons: -You need Windows 7 or higher in order to download.
-You need a 64 bit system in order to download the 64 bit version. This is kind of hard when you're building a new PC (64 bit) and are currently using a 32 bit system. After searching online for about an hour, I found out that the only way to get the 64 bit version when currently using a 32 bit system is to buy the physical copy.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I'm beyond dissatisfied with the process of downloading Windows 8.1 and time it has wasted. To top it off, I can't get a refund. I'm uninstalling Windows 8.1 and will install Ubuntu.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: After using Windows 7 since it was released, and I already have Windows 8.1 installed on a custom built desktop and wanted a copy to install on one of my laptops. So I bought the downloadable copy of Windows 8.1 and saved $10. I also read and heard about how many people simply just didn't like it due to the start menu missing. Installing it took less than 30 minutes. The start menu isn't stellar, but the improvements that this OS has really is noticeable over Windows 7, especially the boot up and shutdown times.

Cons: Trying to figure out where everything was (control panel, etc) and no Windows Media Center w/o upgrade to Windows 8.1 PRO. Knocked off an egg for both of those issues.

Other Thoughts: Once I got everything figured out with this OS and customized the way I want it, I actually like it. Like every new Windows OS, it is almost always expected that you have to relearn where everything is and this is no exception. I still also have Windows 7 PRO x64 installed on another partition to go into if I need to access Windows Media Center and to install anything that might not work with Windows 8.1. Also the download version is cheaper to get than the boxed retail version and you can also save the download as an ISO to back up and burn another DVD copy if you need to.
