4 out of 5 eggsEasy to install for Small Business with a single server but a hassle returning for a defective DVD

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Sets up easily, especially with the Dashboard. But this is going into a small business with less than 20 employees primarily as a file server but also running the SonicWall Analyzer software.

Cons: None for the size of this customers business.

Other Thoughts: The problem was with NewEgg returns. It took nearly 2 months of eMails with NewEgg to finally be able to return the product because it contained a defective DVD that no drive would recognize let alone read. After 3 weeks of eMails I finally got a person who promised to resolve the issue but it still took a month for them to get back to me .. I had to eMail them to get the RMA. The experience makes me hesitate to purchase from NewEgg anything that may possibly be defective. Note: this was the first time I ever got a Microsoft product with a bad DVD .. I have been in the business for more than 20 years. This is also the first time I had to get an RMA from NewEgg from whom I have purchasing products for the last few years. I ended up purchased from another supplier in order to meet my customer's schedule.

1 out of 5 eggsStupid limitations imposed by MS

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: It's kind of like a 2012 R2 OS, not sure if that is a pro or a con though.

Cons: Essentials is horrible. Has to be the sole domain controller or it can be a member server as long as there is an Essentials server as the sole domain controller. Still has all the annoying limitations of small business server.

Other Thoughts: All I needed was a WSUS server for a small business. The description says it can be a member server but if you research this you will find it has to be a member server on a domain with a 2012 R2 Essentials server as the sole domain controller. You can remove the essentials feature and join it to a 2012 R2 standard but that voids the license. Lame.

4 out of 5 eggsDHCP and DNS????

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Does what you need.

Cons: You will have to install DHCP and DNS to get Active Directory to work properly. Very odd. Windows 8 interface. Very odd.

Other Thoughts: I don't know why but it will not backup to a partition on an internal drive. The drive must be dedicated to backup. I installed on an SSD and it backs-up to another internal mechanical drive. I need to rethink this.

5 out of 5 eggsFaster and more reliable than WHS 2011

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: - Significantly faster for all aspects than WHS v2 (2011). Mapped drives come up instantly without the brief pause that occurred with WHS
- Servio works well with PS3...more reliable with less erros
- VPN integration allows me to map my surface pro 2 via cellphone to all connected drives...works flawlessly with very little setup
- Suppors Surface Pro 2 backup...I haven't been brave enough to attempt a restore/rebuild of my SP2
- Metro interface (which I loved after 3rd month of Win8) works...even if a little odd in server setting. It basically puts all critical apps on one screen and your interface is integrated across your desktop, surface pro, and server interface
- Supports ios apps for monitoring/connecting.
- Ability to do remote desktop from web (I think?) but you must choose remote desktop OR folder view
- Has domain capabilities...for those who know how to take advantage of...

Cons: - Cost....but benefits have definitely been worth every penny!
- Remote connect gives you two different methods...but unfortunately you choose which one you'd like. Therefore, going to http://server.homeserver.com will take you to standard folder view OR to a remote desktop...I wish you could choose your interface each time you connect.
- No graphical drive apps unlike some of the apps that could be used in WHS. A little tedious using the numerical table view
- Some of the server folders can't be deleted easily.

Other Thoughts: Don't hesitate if consider between WHS!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Backup Software

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Really like the backup software. Very helpful for backing up the 5 computers on my home network.

Having a common location for media for the whole home is also great.

Cons: Price is very steep for a home user.

Other Thoughts: I've previously used Windows Home Server 2011 which had similar features, but only supported 10 PCs instead of 25. 10 was adequate for a home user.

Sad to see that Microsoft discontinued WHS product line. It's the best backup software I've come across for a PC. The Essentials software has the same features (and allows for more PCs), but the price is considerably higher than WHS was.

3 out of 5 eggsBeware of System Requirements

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Excellent Server OS that is a great replacement for WHS.

Cons: Microsoft is very general about system requirements; most any reasonably powerful system meets the specs. What they don't tell you is that you might have a hard time getting drivers for a system based on a desktop motherboard. For example, Intel does not provide a driver for Windows Server for its desktop oriented i217V LAN chip, but only for its i217LM chip. I still have not found a driver for the PCI Simple Communications Controller, though I finally found one for the SM Bus Controller.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Solid OS

Cons: Tablet interface

Other Thoughts: The product key that comes with this WILL successfully activate a server installed using the 180 day trial from Microsoft.

4 out of 5 eggsA HUGE bang for your buck.

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: The price to feature set of this Windows Server package is great. 25 Client licenses and all the basic features most small offices need (File & Print Sharing, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, etc). The Included windows backup is quite good and the ability to backup workstations as a complete restorable image is wonderful.

R2 version includes hyper-v roles, and rights to run virtualized if desired. In fact, I'd say this is a good option for shops whom want to virtualize with Hyper-V server, but want good backups and gui support. I've personally had great success with Hyper-V and CentOS 6.5 VMs. An odd combo for sure, but VERY cost effective for reasons beyond the scope of this review.

Cons: At first glance the 'wizardy' setup and streamlined admin menus are off-putting for us old timers who've been working with MS server since the NT days. Expect to re-install a couple times to learn the 'correct' answers to the wizards and you'll get a system configured exactly how you want. Sometimes the wizards build a setup that cannot be changed later (IE Computer Name).

Other Thoughts: Once I got a feel for how the wizards and new interfaces work, I have to say I'm a believer. They really do save time accomplishing 90% of the repetitive setup steps with clients. I'd guess I can roll out a new client server configuration in half the time.

Basic install came to about 13 gigs. I was able to install the OS to SSD, then easily 'move' all the pre-built shared folders to larger RAID storage arrays. You can also create your own shares the same as previous versions of Windows Server.

Do your homework. Essentials comes with some heavy limitations for large/multi-site operations, but for most small offices, this is a great option. Thanks Microsoft.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid OS

This review is from: Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials 64B 1-2CPU

Pros: Perfect for home or small office usage, and IMO the price isn't terrible considering it includes CALs for 25 users/50 devices.

Really loving the centralized client backup feature. works great, and it utilizes data de-duplication to maximize storage efficiency.

My other favorite Server 2012 feature is NIC Teaming/LBFO. Super easy to set up, especially 'switch independent' mode. Basically just run thru the wizard and plug in your LAN cables.

Essentials also includes all the 'standard' features such as AD, DNS, DHCP, WSUS, etc etc.

Cons: I wish it came with 2 VM licenses

Other Thoughts: 2012 R2 Essentials license DOES include virtualization rights. You get (1) Physical and (1) Virtual instance. In this configuration, the Physical instance can ONLY run the Hyper-V role, you must remove all other roles to be in compliance.
