5 out of 5 eggsDoes improve performance

Pros: The interface makes it very easy to turn off/uninstall unused programs and processes. Although this is possible to do via control panel or through administrative tools, the AVG interface sorts the processes by how much i.e. boot time they require or by how critical the process is.

I installed this program on two Windows 7 computers and one older XP laptop, and after spending about an hour of set up per computer all three computers perform much better than they did before. This laptop had the best performance increase - the boot time is now HALF what it used to be.

Cons: On the XP computer it is not possible to run any of the program functions unless you are logged in as administrator. (I NEVER log in as administrator on any of my computers unless I need to install software to reduce the chances of getting a computer virus - it works). For most AVG functions this is not a big deal, but I configured AVG to automatically switch to "Economy" mode on the laptop when it is running on battery power, and it cannot do this unless you are an administrator, which I find odd.

This is not an issue with the Windows 7 computers.

Other Thoughts: One of my pet peeves with most software (especially software installed on new computers) is that most software is configured to start processes during boot so the software will launch more quickly. I always found this asinine because often it is software that I rarely use, and rather than make things faster it slows them down because now I have to wait for all these unneeded processes to start when I login to windows. AVG Tuneup makes it easy to turn these processes off so they will only start when the program itself is started.

I am not sure why others are having so many problems with this software. I must admit that I was a little skeptical when I bought it, but have not had any problems. This software does i.e. defrag your registry (among other critical Windows functions) so it COULD potentially do some damage it things go wrong.

What I recommend before installing software like this is to completely backup your entire hard drive (I use Clonezilla, works great). Actually you should be doing this on a regular basis anyway. If you do decide to install this software do the following first:
1) clean your hard drive (empty trash, purge temporary internet files, uninstall unused programs, etc.)
2) Do a complete virus scan of your computer (doing step one first always makes step 2 faster). I recommend Avira's standalone bootable CD - it is free software that scans your hard drive while Windows is not booted, so it can do a more thorough rootkit scan.
3) defrag your hard drive (optional)
4) backup your entire computer on an external hard drive using a program like Clonezilla.

Now if something goes wrong with your computer you have a fresh virus-free version you can fall back on. Repeat the above steps on a regular basis and it will be far easier to recover from a computer catastrophe.

1 out of 5 eggsKilled my PC: slow to a crawl. REBUILD time

Pros: Did fix some registry problems and identified a few programs running that I did not need (apple itunes stuff).

The free downloaded version worked well. So I thought I would buy this paid version to see if it would work better. Not the case. Did not want to believe the low ratings. My mistake.

Cons: Followed all the optimization suggestions and defragged the HD. Here are the RESULTS:

Start-up now 10X slower. Booting Mozilla 4X slower. Killed my USB transfer rate which now takes twice as long using the same USB flash drive I have been using. Internet connection is worthless.

Switched to the TURBO mode since I was willing to sacrifice visual effects but I saw no improvement.

Customer service through the chat is worthless. I am always in "Position #1, but then wait forever. Finally I gave up. There is no e-mail to write to tech support. There is a phone number but I have not time to be put on hold forever.

Other Thoughts: Uninstalled and looks like I am going to have to REBUILD my PC again. About ready to go to MAC soon.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Good for increasing heart rate to dangerous levels

Cons: All the disk does is send you to the website where it downloads an empty, non working version. Leaves you in no mans loop entering the same numbers over and over. The chat line is hopelessly understaffed and the phone bank is only open when I have to work. Once installed how does one open the program and use it? It seems after doing the same thing over and over ten times it will finally show that it's registered, but that seems to be the the extent of the program.

Other Thoughts: What a waste to time, money and energy. Don't walk away, RUN

1 out of 5 eggsDON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Pros: Who knows?

Cons: Would not install. Received activation error message.

Tried again. Removed the AVG programs via Revo. Rebooted, tried the insatll again and again received activation error. Unistalled remenents. Downloaded the current version from thir website. Same results. Went through all the FAQs etc., no help.

Finally called customer support. Gave up after being on hold for an hour and twenty minutes.

Other Thoughts: Their Customer Support should be renamed to "No customer Support". Not withstanding, their message that "your call is important to us..." is clearly isn't.
It would appear that AVG has no clue on how to do a retail install via an install disk.

Should I allow their software to clean up my PC? No way!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Job

Pros: Nice product, we've installed on new and old machines with very good results in PC performance.

Cons: I have nothing negative to say other that it's a little pricey for a year license.

There is link to check for updates, all that does is to take you to a web page where there are a lot of updates and I have no clue which ones are specific to this program, so I've never downloaded updates. But all of my installs so far have been off CD not the AVG site.

Other Thoughts: Just for kicks I installed a license on an old Dell that was extremely slow and was just replaced by a new machine, it probably improved the performance of the 6 year old machine by 70%. That was impressive.

I would download the trial version off the AVG site rather than installing off the supplied CD, then enter the license key.

1 out of 5 eggsNo support

Pros: Usually a reliable and trouble-free product. I've used it for many years.

Cons: I activated my 3-user 1-year license and it only showed 6 months. AVG tech support is horrible and I gave up.

1 out of 5 eggsCan Not Activate

Pros: It's New 2013 ( if I could use it).

Cons: Cannot complete online registration to get License Number.
Website says they know about problem and are trying to fix. It's been days for me, I contacted them and was told it would be 2-3 weeks for higher up tech support to give me license code or I could keep trying until it works.
