Windows 7 64-bit Plug-n-play
- Pros: Dropped into my Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit box, auto-installed, and ran. No drivers required. Replaced the Aetheros 1 gigabit onboard NIC, which wasn't able to negotiate a gigabit link with a plain vanilla Netgear switch. Works great. Low price. Not much else to say.
- Cons: None.
- Other Thoughts: None.
- Pros: Perfect for VMware ESX/ESXi.
- Cons: None.
Forget the onboard NIC!
- Pros: Excellent card that knocks the socks off onboard NICs and NICs from other manufacturers. Fast, stable, good design. Drivers are easy to download from Intel's Web site and install on Windows XP.
- Cons: No free shipping from Newegg.
- Other Thoughts: Against my better instincts, I originally bought a Netgear GA311 to replace an onboard Fast Ethernet NIC as part of upgrading my entire home to Gigabit. BIG MISTAKE. When it worked, it worked. But the cable disconnects and sluggish performance were totally unacceptable.
So, I bought an Intel NIC and have been happy ever since.
In fact, I was so happy that I bought two more to replace crummy onboard NICs on other systems, including one that went on the fritz after I installed Windows XP (it was working under the Fedora Live CD, so I suppose the problem was the driver, but who cares now).
If you are looking for a high-quality, stable, fast Gigabit NIC for a desktop, buy THIS ONE. Now.
