1 out of 5 eggsReview update

Pros: Great when works

Cons: After about 4 months in the router is crashing every few hours. Will have to spend money to have replaced since the warranty was only 90 days. Used Netgear for all my previous routers but moving on to different brand after my experience with this router.

Other Thoughts: I have emailed the newegg@netgear.com twice, as they asked in response to my earlier review. This was two days ago and no one has emailed back or tried to get in contact. So I don't really see any proof that Netgear is standing behind this product. And with an average rating of 3 eggs now it goes to show this router model is a lemon.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

We understand your frustration. We answer emails in the order we receive them, and appreciate your patience while our engineers work on troubleshooting your issue and replying. We expect to get in touch with you very soon, and thanks again for taking the time to get in touch with us.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks with tweaks.

Pros: - 802.11ac with improvements to 802.11n as well.
- GbE ports.
- Can afford the refurb., but not the retail price.
- USB ports.
- Good 2.4GHz range and speeds.
- DD-WRT support.

Cons: - Geanie. Netgear, redirecting to your web-site without permission is bad.
I will never run Netgear stock firmware for this reason alone.
- No LAN LEDs. Come on Netgear, remove that stupid logo LED and add real
LAN LEDs.
- It's big.
- Not mountable on anything.
- 5GHz was really weak - barely crossed the room. Not sure if this is a
problem with this unit, or with the entire line.

Other Thoughts: - Had to boost Tx Power on the 5GHz to get decent range.
- Haven't tried real ac adapters yet, only a/n ones.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy

Pros: Great when it works.

Cons: After about 4 months in the router is crashing every few hours. Will have to spend money to have replaced since the warranty was only 90 days. Used Netgear for all my previous routers but moving on to different brand after my experience with this router.

Other Thoughts: You lose customers when you produce a sub-par product.

4 out of 5 eggsExcited to see the ac standard progress...

Pros: - Nice price
- Good range
- Netgear Genie
- Reliable

It was easy to hookup. I purchased a AC standard adapter for my desktop upstairs and get between 480 and 665 Mbps. Plenty of speed for a wireless connection.

Cons: None so far. Not 5 stars because nothing is perfect.

5 out of 5 eggswireless gigabit on the cheap!

Pros: Price, easy set-up, fast, and bridge mode! I have two refurbs @ $90 :) and one purchased new at $200. :( Bridge mode comes in handy for the xbox 360's flaky wireless network connections. Range is fantastic! Beams from upstairs to downstairs opposite side of the house (about 45') and still maintains 700+mbps!

Cons: The DLNA server can be a #$%# sandwich. it doesn't update as you add media to external USB drive and the only fix is to delete the netgear folder that contains the metadata from a PC then reconnect it to the router and let the router re-recognize the files. HOWEVER, the router i purchased new has issues with some file names and corrupted the data files that included thumbnail pics for the media. This causes the router to stop adding media to its DLNA library when it reaches the corrupt files. browsing through the folders shows everything but using the DLNA server shows almost nothing. this is my gripe with this model. Deleting the DLNA folder does not resolve this issue. No big deal though as there are several work arounds.

Other Thoughts: No regrets with my purchases as I got a gigabit wired lan network through my house without having to string cables and for way cheaper too!

5 out of 5 eggsPretty good with a little help

Pros: The stock firmware isn't bad, but can be upgraded to either the lastest stock firmware or to DD-WRT (google it). DD-WRT gives you numerous extra features over stock; most important to many here is it will give you the ability to pump a higher transmit power, which will improve the range of the router.

Cons: This is a refurbished router. The three we have purchased didn't look quite new, but all three are performing like champions.

Other Thoughts: From what I've read, if you intend to use these as a wireless bridge, DD-WRT might not be the way to go as it limits the ethernet connections to 100mbps instead of gigabit. With that in mind, it's still plenty of bandwidth to have more than one 1080p streams running at the same time over the ac side of things.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Unreliable Router

Pros: When it works, it's great. Two WiFi nets at 2.4, and two at 5 GB/s. Great coverage in my house.

Cons: But, when the firmware gets corrupted, without warning, and for no apparent reason, it's a pain to bring back to life. By now, I have a copy of the firmware stored on my iMac, and the TFTP app at the ready, so it's a matter of resetting the IP address of my iMac manually and TFTP-ing the firmware to the Netgear. Takes about 20 minutes, and I'm back in business. But, the first time around, it was an absolute nightmare. I had to rig up another standby router to d/l the firmware, and I had to search around for a TFTP capability. Finally found one for my Win7 netbook, not having known about the TFTP shareware app for the Mac. Netgear's instructions for the Mac are incomplete--virtually worthless, just like their [non-]support. They offered an olive branch for my similar review elsewhere, but it was all smoke and mirrors. No follow-through at all. So, imagine driving a car that stops dead without warning, and you have to get out and change the solid state engine control module.

Other Thoughts: I just wish that there were some brand of high-performance router that is reliable and for which one can easily obtain competent support. I guess that Apple's Airport is the only such around,

Manufacturer Response:

Hi SteveG,

We want to help - did we invite you to email us on the other review? If you didn't receive a response from us, please follow up at newegg@netgear.com. We stand behind the R6300 and want to get you up and running with a warranty replacement if needed, and apologize if somehow our original reply didn't come through or reach you.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing performance

Pros: Easy to set up , is doing service in a Apartment building over the beach with 90 % retired people with high demands in service a reliability, this replace a 150n Linksys . .

Cons: Nothing at all in the past 4 months

Other Thoughts: The building is a 40 years old , when the construction was real massive ,not the modern and light components today.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

Pros: Was great while it works.

Cons: Owned the router for a little over 3 months so it put me just outside the warranty period and now the router starts having issues. It quits functioning about once a day and has to be turned off and reset to get back up and running.

Other Thoughts: Avoid this router, look into other brands, this product obviously is not good quality.

2 out of 5 eggsRotten Router

Pros: On the 5G works fine, when it work. Works for only three months.

USB share works for small drives.

Bad design. Terrible device

Cons: The router's performance is awful. The speed on the 2.4Ghz frequency work for about 3 months on the guess and regular network. The wireless network fail to connect, the modem was functioning properly while the router fail to connect. The wired and wireless devices could not access any network resource thru this paper weight.

The features are not that good. The Open Source Support is not available, very bad. I do not found any difference in speed between my old router and this paper weight, except that fail in less than a year.
The Repeater option never worked at all. The USB share do not load over 1TB.

Other Thoughts: Not recommend for an upgrade. Not even the new one. This model is a lemon.

Manufacturer Response:
