Complete Waste of Money
- Pros: Decent price for the advertised features.
- Cons: The one advertised feature that would actually make you buy this device is a complete joke. I bought two of these to set up a VPN Link between two offices. I've done this before with other routers, but chose these because my customer was convinced that Linksys is the best.
They've been a non stop nightmare. The link spends as much time down as up, and one of the routers fully reboots itself several times a day. I suspect that one may be defective, and may even be the cause of the ongoing problems. Updated firmware on both, no change.
As of today, pulling them out of service and hoping for an RMA, and I'll replace them with something I can actually count on, like the VPN edition of DD-WRT.
Don't do it!

I bought this router, sure it connected my network to the internet, but beyond that it was useless.
Even if VPN worked, your only option is to VPN to another VPN router, it does not take connections from software VPN clients.
Since I can't be in two places at the same time, I turned on remote management so I could try to get a tunnel established. I COULD NOT remote into this thing, I would get login dialog, then nothing, ever.
Called person at remote location to have them log in and try to follow my instruction but they had all kinds of trouble tryin got log into the thing from the LAN from a directly cable connected computer.
The think is junk.
I returned it after 2 days for a full refund.
- Other Thoughts: Uh... I gave it one egg because this form would not let me post with zero eggs.
Not for VPN
- Pros: It routes
- Cons: The VPN isn't stable. I knock eggs off simply because it is advertised as a VPN router, but doesn't work or i have a bad router (i updated the firmware also).
- Other Thoughts: I have 4 RV042 running 6 VPNs. They are very stable and have been for years (the VPN literally hasn't dropped once x4). I thought i'd save a few dollars and buy the BEFSX41. It was a mistake. I've spent hours trying to get the VPN stable, it just doesn't work. I'm giving up and am going to work with the RV042 which has worked beautifully for years.
