4 out of 5 eggsWorks but could be better

Pros: The phone works as advertised. The phone sounds great and has a strong signal several rooms away. It was very easy to set up. I had it up and running withing about 5 minutes.

Cons: It will only store contacts for Skype or Skypeout. You can not store contacts to use it as a regular phone via the land line.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks well, Kinda cheap

Pros: Very simple setup, worked behind a router and firewall. Imports your Skype contacts. Not as nice as a free standing WI-FI unit, this does require a base station, however it is better than those USB ones that require your computer.

Cons: Cheap plastic frame. I would scared to drop it even on carpet. I have my doubts on durability, the tell tale, that little label that says MADE IN CHINA, So just because it has the names Linkseys and Cisco on it doesn't mean it's well made.

Other Thoughts: Probably wait until the free standing Wi-FI handsets come out, not a bad product, but a little pricey for a cheap plastic phone.

1 out of 5 eggsI Wanted It To Work...

Pros: The only pros that I can think of are:

1. The concept (dual mode, DECT, etc..) is great. Too bad it didn't work in reality.

2. Easy to "set up." At least, I assume that it would be easy. It never actually worked.

3. There are pretty lights on the side of the base station when you reset the unit. I got to see those a lot.

4. The fact that it doesn't work seems to be a very common problem, which shows at least some consistency.

5. It didn't cause me any physical pain, just emotional and psychological damage while trying to get it to work properly.

6. Linksys tech support called me "sir" a lot. Which was nice, because a little respect goes a long way after you spend money on a product that's rudely awful. This is the first time I've actually felt insulted by an inanimate object.

Cons: The phones would hang after ten minutes and display "System is Starting Up" indefinitely. (When I say indefinitely, I mean it. I've left the thing overnight and 24 hours later it's still "starting up.")

In order to eke out another measly ten minutes of uptime, I had to hard reset the base station. Every time. In between crashes, it would randomly tell me that certain features of the phone were "UNAVAILABLE." It didn't really seem to matter whether or not I was using the Landline or Skype. I've tried every possible configuration in the device's web interface, every possible physical configuration on my network, etc. Nothing worked.

After thinking that this may just be a defective product, I ended up googling CIT400 + UNAVAILABLE, and found that there are quite a few people out there who are experiencing the same torturous battle with this piece of trash.

Other Thoughts: I was very disappointed in this product. I've been a Linksys customer for years now, and I've never run into anything this flagrantly horrible from them. Linksys Tech Support seems to disavow all knowledge of any specific problems with the device, which is strange because if you do a little searching, you'll find that it's very common.

Buy this product if you're a gambling sort... More power to you if it works. If it doesn't, don't say I didn't warn you.

5 out of 5 eggsBest Skype Phone

Pros: The audio quality is outstanding . The buttons are properly spaced which makes dialing easy.Setup is plug and play :)Working perfect with my Westell dsl modem , Buffalo Nfiniti WZR-AG300NH Wireless-N Dual Band Gigabit Router & Access Point. In the past year i never had any problem with this skype phone.

Cons: This Phone does not support Skype Chat , when users see you online they get a message "this user's version of Skype doesn't support chat".

Other Thoughts: The CIT-400 is a hybrid landline/LAN phone that plugs directly into any existing phone line and LAN to give you access to both services.
Skype phones do not currently function for 9-1-1 emergency calls, but one work around for this is to check if your local area has a seven digit Emergency number you can program in for speed dialing.
Recommeded if you call overseas often. Saves you money :)

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Phone with minor problem

Pros: The phone was up and runnng just in just a few minutes.

Cons: If you have unlimited Skypeout calling the phone will not recognize this. It will show you as having a low credit, mine says $ 0.16 but some forums have .09. The only apparent solution so far is to buy some Skype credits (kind of defeats the purpose of Skype).

Other Thoughts: The "low credit" does not keep you from Skypeout calling, you just have to acknowlege it every time you make a call.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Skype Phone

Pros: Good phone works without a hitch.
Never gone out of range in our 1720SF home

Cons: The batteries that this phone comes with are a poor design choice by linksys. I have not been able to find an aditional handset so this is the only home phone in the house.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor software/firmware

Pros: No PC required, wireless.

Cons: 1. The phone does not ring the skype after a few days being connected. You need to remember to hard reset it every day (unplug, wait, plug it back).

2. The outgoing connections still work after a few days, but the calling party will not hear your voice until you hard reset the base station.

3. There is no speed dial in the phonebook - a very basic feature present in all cheap walgreens phones.

4. There are absolutely no conferencing features - you can not talk to more than 1 skype contact at a time, can not connect a landline call to skype, etc. Any other skype phone will and should have these basic features.

5. Landline calls sometimes are not properly connected either - I pick up the handset, hit the answer soft key and the call is immediately dropped.

6. If you need to dial any extensions, voicemail passwords, conferencing codes, account numbers while on skype out call - the phone will not dial them correct

Other Thoughts: Firmware/skype needs improvement. Would not buy if I knew the issues.

1 out of 5 eggsThere is a known problem with this phone

Pros: First, the idea is GREAT.
Second, when it works, it's GREAT.
But when it doesn't work, it's TERRIBLE. See under Cons ...

Cons: BUT BUT BUT, there's a known problem with the firmware (see Linksys tech support forums) which Linksys does not acknowledge. See the thread 'CIT400 - Unavailable and locked in "System is starting up" mode'. Basically the handset locks up and just shows a 'System is starting up' message. I found that thread after calling Linksys tech support who were useless - I couldn't even get hold of a manager. There are some tech tips in the forum about how to fix it, but, basically, you're on your own. If I knew this now, I'd wait for version 2.0.

Other Thoughts: Great idea; flawed execution; hopeless tech support.
