1 out of 5 eggsSecurity Risk

Pros: Small, portable, nice set of features.

Cons: D-Link has not kept up on security risks for this model. Google CVE-2013-4772 for one example from July of this year. There have been others as well. It's odd since for the very similar DIR-505, there have been several firmware updates this year. None since 2012 for the DIR-505L. This leaves the device too risky to use, and pointless to purchase. I've talked to D-Link's support, they are aware of the issue, but don't seem to be able to get a patched firmware release done.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointed in D-link

Pros: I have used a D-link DIR-655 router for quite a while. Very familiar with D-link's networking interface and settings.

As far as the DIR-505L not so much.

Would be great if the features setup easily.

Cons: My main purpose was to use this as a hotspot when traveling. Hook it up to a hotel wired internet to wirelessly share the signal with my Kindle Fire HD and phone.

When I received this at home I opened it to test it before a trip. I moved the manual switch to Hotspot and went through the steps.

Here are some of the problems:

* It had a hard time detecting a wireless network 6 feet away. Also the progress bar would freeze when searching a few attempts.

* D-link interface stated the device was rebooting when I named the hotspot assigned a different password. It never rebooted (four different tries after resetting the unit). The light stayed green on the unit. After the 60 second countdown my browser said connection refused. I closed out the browser. There was no hotspot named what I named it (I double checked with my Kindle and Smartphone also) . Attempting to log back on to the default nSSID that came up refused connection. Had to use the pin hole reset.

Other Thoughts: The unit I received was HW version A1 Firmware Version 1.00 (think the firmware was dated December 2012). There are no new firmware updates on the D-link site for this model.

I am filling for a RMA after I post this. Too much time and trouble.

2 out of 5 eggsUnderbaked

Pros: Setup the device as a repeater. Easy setup.

Cons: Device continuously drops the signal, forcing a refresh of the wireless connection.

Other Thoughts: Seems the earlier version, the 505, had this issue, but was fixed with firmware updates. Hopefully the same will be done here, but you'd think lessons would have been learned.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Having installed many Linksys / Cisco routers, access points, repeaters over the I found the unit easy to set up and use. The setup screens are easy to understand and follow. I have had little or no problems with the several modes of operation. Its compact size and low heat output will make it a useful travel router / wifi hot-spot. I can recommend it without any reservations.

Cons: Being a long time user of Linksys / Cisco products some of the terms and procedures took a bit of patience before they became clear.
